learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic

local and global issues. (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg. 6).

Rational Statement:

This artifact is my current trends demo lesson plan that my partner and myself created

based on the topic that art programs and school safety go hand in hand. We created a lesson plan

that included a PowerPoint, class discussion and different activities to show that mental health is

the common factor between both art classes and school safety. We collaboratively researched our

topic and put together a creative lesson based on the research that we found showing that art

classes can decrease mental health. Mental health has a direct impact on school safety, and when

mental health problems decrease, students safety increases. I related this topic to standard 5.i.7,

“The teacher facilitates learners’ ability to develop diverse social and cultural perspectives that

expand their understanding of local and global issues and create novel approaches to solving

problems” (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg. 7). This lesson discussed the

ongoing issue of school safety, and another issue of taking away art classes and creating a way to

lessen these problems. Art classes lets students express themselves and it gives them an outlet to

release their emotions. This relieves stress, anger, sadness, etc. When these hostile feelings

dissolve, students safety increases. My partner and I researched this issue to better understand

our topic, and we were able to extend our knowledge to our class.

This artifact has taught me how important mental health is for students. Through research

I have learned how much mental health can impact a person and what they are capable of.

Something as simple as art is a way for students to improve their well-being and mental state.

Mental health is a direct connection to safety in our schools. The more students that are being

diagnosed with emotional and mental issues, the higher risk our students are at. Schools need to

create solutions to help the whole student. Having stress relievers such as art classes can help

keep mental health down.

I can use this artifact as a future educator to better understand how important it is to keep

electives such as art in schools. Looking back at this artifact, it will remind me to add more art

lessons into my core lesson plans. I will keep in mind how important it is to teach lessons and

provide opportunities that benefit the whole child.
