The primary symbol that captures my attention is the face of a woman that is centered in

the mural. She is various shades of soft blues that resemble the sky. Her demeanor is neutral and

she is looking towards the left which indicates she is perhaps content. Her hair resembles waves

that are going in multiple directions; this represents she cares for the oceans. She wishes to

preserve the ocean and the animals that live there. The actual waves themselves are not calm, but

somewhat chaotic. They are crashing in multiple directions. In totality, she represents Mother

Nature; she cares about the occurrences that happen in our environment. I believe this is why she

looks to the left towards the world because she is watching over everything. She wishes to make

sure only positive things happen in nature.

Above Mother Nature is a large maroon colored sphere. It is on both sides of the mural so

it resembles something that connects nature and any form of art. The maroon color draws the eye

of the audience which intensifies the fact that it brings together beautiful things that exist in the

world. Above the sphere in the top center of the portrait, is an arch of colorful shapes. They are

all unsymmetrical and face opposing directions which signifies how art is not a uniform medium.

People may express what they desire in any manner they dream of. The fact that it is in the shape

of an arch represents how art is the foundationally accepting towards anyone; any person can

take a step to unravel your inner creativity.

There are a man and a woman who are to the right of Mother Nature and they are next to

a tree. It seems as if the woman is reaching towards Mother Nature, but the man is holding her

back. The woman perhaps is curious about Mother Nature and what she has to offer. The man

could be holding her back because he is protecting her from evil in the world. He is also holding

onto a tree branch because he does not want to stray away from the roots the grounded him. The
man seems to be afraid of change and wishes to remain in a safe space. Even in analyzing the

posture of the man and woman, they seem to depict how they have opposing views. The woman

seems to be more free and relaxed, but the man is stagnant and firm.

In the left bottom of the mural, there is a hand with “ART SAVES LIVES” wrapped

around the hand. The hand is amidst a black galaxy and is bringing light into not only darkness

but literally in the world. The actual flame from the candle on top of the world has circular

illuminations that slowly bring light into the darkness. This represents how there are so many

destructive and depressing things that happen in the world, but expressing artwork brings joy

into the world. Even a singular candle that sits atop the globe makes a difference in a dark world.

Just above the hand in the darkness is a steep staircase with a figure walking up. The stairs have

the illusion that they are floating on their own in space. The actual steps are light green and the

side is a burnt orange color. The figure also has an interesting arm movement as he is walking up

the stairs; (I do not understand the representation). The figure appears to walk from a background

that is firey red to light purple. This piece also contains a circular piano with paint brushes

surrounding it. I believe it was the intention of the composer to indicate to his audience that any

form of artwork is equally important for people to express. Expressing one’s own artwork gives

someone the ability to emulate their emotions and share their perspective on a concept.

Under mother nature is a white hand that is holding a white object. It is difficult to

decipher what exactly she is holding, but the white object appears lifeless. This is interesting

because typically the color white represents purity and peace. This object in the mural seems to

be the opposite of that, however. Since it is below Mother Nature, perhaps the white object is

depressing things that happen in nature such as people polluting and not treating nature correctly.
In the upper right corner of the piece are gold shapes that are multiple shapes. It is

uncertain what they are exactly, but they do resemble hieroglyphics paintings from caves.

Heiroglyphic images in caves were known to tell a story so these images perhaps tell a story

about the function of nature and art.

The placement of this mural was on Rosevelt and it was somewhat hidden and difficult to

find. It is on the back of a building that is itself colorful; it is blue and white. It is interesting that

it is a parking lot. People in their daily lives can simply view this work of art as they park their

car.
