Acknowledgements

I would like to recognize the following people for their help throughout my internship:
• Bill Sterner, my agency supervisor for taking me under his wing for the last few months.
• Scott Noll, the principal of CSHS for giving me the opportunity to help at his school.
• The Recreation department at Shepherd University for preparing me for my future
endeavors over the last three years.
• Mark Shives, the head varsity baseball coach, for his cooperation.

Without the effort displayed by these individuals my internship would not only have been less
enjoyable, but much more stressful than it was. They were there for me to lend a helping hand
whenever I needed and supported me from start to finish. Thank you.

Description of the Community
The Clear Spring community is a small town in Washington County, Maryland with roughly 400
residents who live within its limits. It sets in a very rural landscape with multiple farms and crop
fields surrounding the school. Clear Spring is considered a blue collar town as policemen, firemen
and landscaping are some of the most popular jobs. It is a close knit community and has a real
family like environment to it. The high school itself is a fairly large one story building that houses
around 450 students. It is one of the only schools in the county that has its own agriculture shop
and the students can work towards graduating with an “ag completer” upon graduation. Sports
are ultra important to this community and success in most all of the teams is expected. It is really
the only way of leaving your legacy behind and will earn respect from the community for rest of
your and your families life.

Agency Description
Clear Spring High School is ran by principal Scott Noll and assistant principal Megan Burton. I
would work out of Bill Sterner's office daily and together we would go over daily goals and
objectives. My daily tasks included: communicating with opposing coaches to obtain roster
information to make game programs, organizing a disorganized equipment locker room,
collecting activity fees, and working with Mr. Sterner to fill in dates for next year's schedules. As
for athletics, I focused most of my time with men and women's basketball in the winter season
and baseball in the spring. My special project was centered around the baseball team as I am an
alumni and it was where my heart was.

!6
Special Project
My special project could really be broken down into three separate parts:

• Field Repair
• Pre-season Dinner and Fellowship
• Senior Night Festivities

Field Repair

A town rooted in baseball, needed to get back on track with the hiring of previous
successful head coach Mark Shives. That entailed restoring a baseball field that had been
mistreated for his few year absence. I helped work with the team in getting all of the necessary
materials ordered and spent a whole Saturday doing the following.

• Rebuilding of the mound

• Expansion of the home bullpen
• Soft toss stations with brick dust ground and turf
• Complete reconstruction of the batting cage
• Cleaning out and expansion of the shed to fit new tractor comfortably
• Hanging windbreaker in centerfield

Pre-season Dinner and Fellowship

The day before the baseball season started, I put together a huge meal with help from my
parents for the team to encourage team building and give them all a guaranteed good meal before
their first game. This entailed:

• 3 large lasagna's, tossed salad, dinner rolls and dessert

• Corn hole and can jam to relax, have fun, and build deeper friendships
• I then proposed an idea to the team at dinner of a Bible Study/Fellowship once a week to
those who were interested. Since, I have led a Bible study of roughly 13 men every week
at the Clear Spring McDonald's at 7:30 before school.

Senior Night Fellowships

Senior Night is a very important time in a high school athletes life. This is even more true
in the Spring season sports as it is a senior’s last time wearing his school colors to compete with

his team. It is also a very important moment for the parents as well. I wanted to let Senior Night
run as smoothly as possible for everyone attending and took on many of the responsibilities on
my own. These included:

• Ordered and drove to pick up corsages for the 5 senior mothers

• Read the submitted senior farewells before the game
• With help from the parents, helped organized an Ernst Market catered dinner after
the game with fried chicken, mac and cheese, baked beans and other miscellaneous food items.
• Brought Can Jam back in and a parent brought in Spike Ball for the athletes to
play after the meal.

!8
Recommendations

• Strengths: Knowing people and the area, having a corporative

staff, invested community.
• Limitations: Budget, communications with other schools.
