Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful tool for planning and assessment of
health interventions and is increasingly recognized as an essential tool in disease control. GIS
can effectively be applied to improve health care provision in disease control programmes,
where new perspectives and approaches are needed. This course provides participants
knowledge and skills on how GIS can be used for i) epidemiological assessment of patterns of
disease in time and place; ii) assessment of accessibility to health care facilities and iii)

indicators. This course uses a combination of theoretical lectures, hands on exercises and case
studies as well as examples from the field presented by external specialists. Diseases covered
include a wide spectrum of water related, vector borne and sexually transmitted as well as
globally emerging diseases such as: Cholera, Malaria, TB, HIV, helminth, Q-fever, SARS.
The course will use ArcGIS/R. Participants will obtain a one-year student licence of ArcGIS.

At the end of the module participants will be able to: explain the purpose of GIS in disease
Course control programs, use basic techniques in GIS for visualization of health data, produce and
objectives interpret health maps, analyse data in a spatial matter, use GIS as a tool for planning and
evaluation of disease control programmes.

2. The course is open to professionals in the health sector and is aimed at: programme
Admission officers, data managers working in disease control, researchers, students in the field of
requirements public health or epidemiology. Proficiency in English and computer literacy are
requirements for the course. Prior exposure to GIS, including practical skills in GIS, is
not needed to follow this course.
