Directions: Fill in each part of the App Lesson with your own original ideas.

Please look at the


sample provided on the class website. Provide 3 to 4 apps/steps for students to complete along
with a creative title, helpful description, and relevant SC teaching standards.

 There must be one app per step.


 Android apps can be use as long as all included apps are from the same platform.
 Lessons must cohesively link together 3 to 4 apps going from one focus/step of the lesson
to another.
 Lessons may include direct instruction provided the lecture contents are explained.
 Lessons may utilize web browser apps like Chrome or Safari to access website-based
tools. Link to the website in the write-up and the web browser app in the iTunes web link
area.
 The final step in lessons must have students create a learning artifact from a creation-
based app (presentation, video, etc.) or screenshot of progress from a skill-based app
that students would submit to the teacher for assessment.

Title: Battles of the Civil War

Relevant SC Standards:

 4.4.CE: Explain the effects of military strategies utilized by the Union and the
Confederacy
 4.4.CC: Identify and evaluate the economic, political, and social changes
experienced throughout the Civil War.
 4.4.E: Analyze the economic, political, and social divisions during the Civil War.

Description: This app lesson will develop 4th grade social studies students’
understanding of the important battles that occurred during the Civil War.

Instructional Objective:

 Students will be able to identify important Civil War battles and where they
occurred.
 Students will be able to discuss important Civil War battles and their outcomes.

Step 1 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will be split into pairs to use the
Encyclopædia Britannica app on their iPads to research different Civil War battles.
The students will then choose one of these battles and take notes on the battle’s
important facts.

Step 2 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will use the Civil War Battle Maps
app to view different maps of the specific battle that they chose. They will also
screenshot two maps from the battle that they have chosen.

Step 3 Creation-Based (Learning Artifact) or Skill-Based App (Screenshot of


Progress): Students will use the app, Canva, to create a basic infographic of the Civil
War battle that they have chosen. They will include important facts from the Britannica
app and the two screenshots that they took from the Civil War Battle Maps app in their
infographic. Students will then present their infographics to the class.
