INDUSTRY PROFILE
After the discovery of electricity way back in the 18 century, it has now become
impossible to imagine the world without electricity. Electricity has become an
essential part in every sphere of human life. A vast economic growth witnessed
across the world has led to a sharp increase in the demand for electricity in the
past several decades. According to International Energy Outlook 2016 published
by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), world’s net electricity
generation is projected to increase 69% by 2040, from 21.6 trillion kilowatt hours
(kWh) in 2012.People use electricity for lighting, heating, cooling, and
refrigeration and for operating appliances, computers, electronics, machinery, and
public transportation systems. Electricity use in the United States in 2017 was
more than 13 times greater than electricity use in 1950. The industrial sector
generates and uses nearly all of the direct use electricity. In 2017, retail sales of
electricity were about 3.68 trillion kWh or 96% of total electricity consumption.
Direct use of electricity by all end-use sectors was about 0.14 trillion kWh or 4%
of total electricity consumption. Currently, electricity is being generated from a
wide range of sources, including wind, solar, nuclear and biomass, among others.
However, coal continues to be a major source of power generation, although it is
being replaced by natural gas, renewable, and nuclear power.

Industries also use huge amounts of electricity to power a diverse range of

manufacturing processes. Due to a surge in industrial activities, industrial
consumption of electricity has gone up sharply in the past few decades. In some
manufacturing processes, electricity is used to increase the temperature of
components in order to achieve desired product shape. While some industrial
facilities build their own power generation plants, others rely on supply from
utilities.

When considering household electric appliances, your safety is the main goal. If
you are facing high bills, flickering lights and damaged appliances at your home,
you can make sure the home circuit is not in a proper working condition. Example
is electrical strike; it can be occurred due to poor wiring in the house or lightning
strikes or faulty appliances or damaged power lines. Surges are common and last
for a microsecond but if you experience frequent surges lead to equipment damage

1
that degrade life expectancy particularly. Sometimes your light fixture has a bulb
or other fitting with high watts than the designed fixture. This is a code violation
and the risk level is quite high. The high heat from the bulb can melt the socket
and insulation present in wires of the fixture. This results in sparks from one wire
to another and causes electrical fires. Even after the bulb is removed, the socket
and wires will still be under damage. It’s known as overloading, so power quality
is important.

The symptoms of a power quality problem could be as subtle as a light that dims
every time a large motor starts or as catastrophic as equipment failure. Whatever
the case, power quality problems may disrupt your business operations. Today,
there is widespread use of digital or microprocessor controlled devices in all areas
of our customer's businesses.

Many of these new devices are more sensitive and may not operate properly when
small variations or disruptions in the electrical supply occur. Some examples of
problems that occur due to power quality problems are: Automatic Resets, Data
Errors, Equipment Failure, Circuit Board Failure, Memory Loss, Power Supply
Problems, UPS Alarms, Software Corruption, and Overheating of electrical
distribution systems.

To function properly, electronic devices require voltage to flow within a

consistent range. Power surges, sags, transients, and momentary interruptions can
cause voltage to fluctuate outside this range. Power quality problems can be
caused by external events, such as lightning strikes can impact power quality but
causes can also include starting and stopping of heavy equipment, circuit
overloads, or improper wiring. Some loads that cycle on or off can cause surges
that can gradually degrade internal circuitry of sensitive electronic equipment. So
InPhase power technology provides solutions for each power quality problems..

An energy management system (EMS) is a system of computer-aided tools used

by operators of electric utility grids to monitor, control, and optimize the
performance of the generation and/or transmission system. Also, it could be used
in small scale systems like micro grids.

The computer technology is also referred to as SCADA/EMS or EMS/SCADA. In

these respects, the terminology EMS then excludes the monitoring and control
functions, but more specifically refers to the collective suite of power network
applications and to the generation control and scheduling applications.

19
Manufacturers of EMS also commonly supply a corresponding dispatcher training
simulator (DTS). This related technology makes use of components of SCADA
and EMS as a training tool for control center operators.

Energy management systems are also often commonly used by individual

commercial entities to monitor, measure, and control their electrical building
loads. Energy management systems can be used to centrally control devices like
HVAC units and lighting systems across multiple locations, such as retail, grocery
and restaurant sites. Energy management systems can also provide metering,
submetering, and monitoring functions that allow facility and building managers
to gather data and insight that allows them to make more informed decisions about
energy activities across their sites.

InPhase EMZ helps to measure, monitor and monetize from your electrical
network.EMZ based on Google big data and analytics offers plentiful insight in to
your data and makes it available on the go be it your mobile or PC.

Different problems in power quality and services

21
REACTIVE POWER

Reactive power contributes to the field excitation in loads and voltage regulation
in the bus. Reactive power contributes to the current drawn from the utility but
does not contribute to the “useful work”.

Reactive power creates a lot of anomalies in the system which affect Power
Quality in the following ways:

 Direct Billing effect/ Penalty by the Utility Authority

 Generator Capacity Reduction
 Transformer Capacity Reduction
 Cables Heating / Capacity Reduction
 Voltage Drops/ Peaks
 Flicker

InPhase Active Filter is capable of compensating dynamic reactive power

instantaneously. Using CT feedback from LT or HT bus, the compensation can be
carried out at LT. For HT compensation, a step-up transformer must be utilized

HARMONICS

Harmonics can be defined as sinusoidal voltage or current waves whose

frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency (50Hz or 60Hz).
These cause distortion of load current and voltage which can affect the
functioning of connected loads.

Some problems that may arise due to harmonics:

 Overheating of transformers, motors and cables

 Thermal tripping of protective devices
 Logic faults of digital devices
 Capacitor overloading
 Neutral overheating

The life span of many devices is reduced by elevated operating temperatures.

22
InPhase is a specialist in catering to harmonics mitigation solution. InPhase has a
wide range of 2 Level as well as 3 Level Active Harmonic Filters, which can bring
down the current harmonics to IEEE519 limits.

VOLTAGE UNBALANCE

Voltage unbalance (or voltage imbalance) is the phenomenon where the voltages
at the individual phases of a 3-phase system are not uniform.

Any voltage unbalance may contribute to premature equipment aging. Unbalance

causes

 Power supply ripple

 Severe insulation degradation due to heat generation
 Decreased mean time between failure (MTBF) on all affected equipments
 Poly-phase induction motors should not be operated with an unbalance
greater than 5%

InPhase has IGBT based solution which can compensate for the negative
sequence current, which is the cause of unbalance. By eliminating the negative
sequence current, InPhase IGBT based converter can balance any L-L unbalance
in the system.

23
TRANSIENTS

Transients or Surges are high magnitude transient waves of voltage, current or

power in the electrical system caused by lightning, switching, magnetic and
inductive Coupling, static Electricity etc.

 Effects of transients on the system:

 Degradation of Insulation, Circuit Breakers, Switches
 Equipment Malfunction/Damage
 Equipment Heating
 Nuisance Tripping
 Increased Hysteresis Loss in Motors
 Transformer Efficiency Reduction
 InPhase provides custom solutions for transients based on the Power
Quality Study.

VOLTAGE DIP

24
Voltage dip or sag is defined as the decrease of the voltage level to 10% - 90% of
the rms voltage for duration of 0.5 cycles to a few seconds. Voltage swell can be
defined as the increase of the voltage to 110-180% of its rms value for a duration
of 0.5 cycle to a few seconds.

Effects of Voltage Dips and Swells:

 Temporary dimming/flickering of lights

 Breakdown of Power Supply Components of Equipment
 Control Problems and Hardware Failure in Equipment
 Equipment Damage

Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) can be used to mitigate voltage sag as well as
voltage swell. DVR is series connected equipment which can dynamically control
the output voltage.

FLICKER

Flicker is a visible change in the intensity or brightness of lighting equipment due

to rapid fluctuations in the voltage of Power Supply. Flicker is usually attributed
to the switching operations of Industrial Processes (Motors, Furnaces etc.).

Effects of flicker:

 Damage to Sensitive Equipment

 Damage to Lighting Equipment
 Reduced Perception & Annoyance to Humans

InPhase provides custom solutions for flicker based on the Power Quality Study.

HARMONIC ANALYSIS

Quality of power supply is now a major issue worldwide making harmonic

analysis an essential element in power system planning and design. Power System
Harmonic Analysis presents novel analytical and modeling tools for the
assessment of components and systems, and their interactions at harmonic
frequencies. The recent proliferation of power electronic equipment is a
significant source of harmonic distortion and the authors present effective
techniques to tackle this real engineering problem. Features include:

25
 Introduction to the main harmonic modeling philosophies
 Analysis of the behavior of harmonic sources, stressing the interaction of
ac/dc converters with the power system
 Information showing the reader how to predict accurately the levels of
voltage and current harmonics throughout the power system
 Explanation of the techniques currently used for the prediction of
harmonic content and the more advanced algorithms recently developed to
determine both characteristic and uncharacteristic harmonic levels
 Description of methods to facilitate accurate assessment of harmonic
sources and precise harmonic flow analysis
 Practical guidance on the prediction of unstable conditions and
uncharacteristic harmonics

Presenting effective techniques for the analysis and resolution of harmonic

interactions, this valuable book will be an asset to engineers and researchers
involved in the planning, design and operation of power systems. Power System
Harmonic Analysis will also serve as a useful reference for postgraduate students
following courses in power systems and power electronics disciplines.

In order to progressively increase the value addition in product need to update.

The R&D in Electronics Group has initiated various research programmers
according to the customer requirements. First study and analyze the code
characteristics and compare based on efficiency, performance and compactness.
Then analyze new updates. if any update came design a system. Then encode and
embedded into the system.

After updating new product will be ready then for performance enhancement need
to do prototyping .Different types of prototyping are available. Then run the
