WHAT’S THE MATTER

WHEN I USE IT?

What is the difference between "What happened?" What's wrong? , What's the
matter? What's going on?

In general, the differences between these expressions are subtle and context
dependent.
WHAT HAPPENED?

Note: Notice how "What happened" will last to ask about something that already
happened. Therefore, it is not "What's happens?" But "What happened?". It is
pronounced something like: "wat hapend" (sound of "d" no "e" at the end) What
happened? What happened? What happened? It's much like when questions in
Spanish, "What happened?", for example entering a place where you have not
been and you try to find out why crystals reason the room are broken.

Note: If you want to ask What happens now? you must say: What's happening?
And if you say: What happens? (At present) What means (usually) ?, does not
refer to now. It's easy to get confused with these two times because in Spanish
What? It is used both for now as commonplace.

Compare:

 What's Happening With The tv? I do not know, it's blurry. What is
happening with television? I do not know, it is blurred. Note: In this case,
I mean right now.
 What Happens every time she eat? What ever she comes true? Note: In
this case indicated habitualidad "every time she comes."

Remember: To ask: What happened? you should say: What happened?

What happens (now)? You must ask "What's happening?".

WHAT'S WRONG?

What (bad) happens to you? It has a negative connotation. Difficult to

understand because in Spanish asked as in the previous case, only customizing
the question: What's wrong? What happens? What is it ?, but there is a different
question, and English.
 What's wrong ?, it is used, for example, to ask a person what happens if
you see that has a face.

Examples:

 What's Wrong with you? You're always crying. What's wrong, you're
always crying.
 What's Wrong With her, she does not look too good. What happens, not
very good.

Note: Notice how after wrong "Personalise" with "with her", "with you".

WHAT'S THE MATTER? WHAT HAPPEN?

It is used to ask what happens in a figurative sense. It would not be the example
of some broken glass, if not visible algono. It is similar to "What's wrong? but
neutrally, it is not necessarily a bad thing.

Examples:

 What's the matter? Nobody's doing anything it. What happen? Nobody is
doing anything.

We can also customize it by putting a pronoun then as follows:

 What's the matter with you? You are not paying attention. What's
 happening to you? You're not paying attention.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

It is also what happens, but more focused on curiosity. For example, I am a

father who comes home in the evening and find that your child mounted a party.
I wonder: What's going on here? What is happening here?

USING THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TO TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE

The present continuous is used to talk about arrangements for events at a time
later than now. There is a suggestion that more than one person is aware of the
event, and that some preparation has already happened.

 I'm meeting Jim at the airport = Jim and I have discussed this.
 I am leaving tomorrow. = I've already bought my train ticket.
 We're having a staff meeting next Monday = all members of staff have
been told about it.

GRAMMAR:

1. Affirmative form:

Subject+Verb To Be+ Verb-ing+Complement

2. Interrogative form:

Verb To Be + Subject + Verb-ing + Complement

3. Negative Form:

Subject+Verb To Be / isn’t + aren´t/ am not + Verb-

ing+Complement

EXAMPLES:

 Is she seeing him tomorrow?

 He isn't working next week.
 They aren't leaving until the end of next year.
 We are staying with friends when we get to Boston

Note: In the first example, "seeing" is used in a continuous form because it

means "meeting".
BE CAREFUL! The simple present is used when a future event is part of a
programmer or time-table.

Notice the difference between:

a. We're having a staff meeting next Monday = just that once

b. We have a staff meeting every Monday
