MAUNGATUROTO CHRISTMAS PARADE

SATURDAY 9th DECEMBER
It’s only a couple of weeks to go till the big event and everything seems to be falling into place. I have a great little commit-
tee who are working hard at to hold an event the whole community can be involved in but it is not too late if you want to be
involved.
We are still looking for talented people to show case themselves, if you are interested please call Eileen on 4318 230 and
leave a message. We are also looking for more stalls from groups or individuals, there is no cost for a stall and it’s a good
way to fund-raise or make a little extra Xmas money, call me to register.
Helpers on the day are now required , there are many jobs from road-patrolling to being a clown and everything in
between, give me a call and I know I will be able to find the right job for you.
So far I have around 18 floats/items registered for the parade, remember it is a good way to get a bit of free advertising
and the chance to win good prize-money so give me a call and get your business or community group noticed.
I have had some frequently asked questions about the parade so I better answer them so I can avoid confusion:
Will there be food on the night? Yes, the country club caters will have meals available and the lions caravan will also be on
site.
Is there any costs? No, the businesses of Maungaturoto financially supports this event so you don’t have to.
Is it too late to be involved? It is never too late to get involved, give me a call we always need more help.
Why has the format changed? Saturdays are no longer a rest day, many people work or play sports on Saturday mornings
and to show that everyone is a valued member of our community we have put the parade in the evening so everyone can
be involved.
Why should I bother going? A pro-active community is a strong community, we always seem keen to tell other areas how
great we are, let’s put that theory to the test and prove it plus you will miss out on a great event.
What can I expect to see? Lots of colour and talent. Lana Searle from More FM will be there and Tane the Northland
Taniwha.
Where do I park? Parking will be available on the primary school field, please no parking on the main street after 5.00 so
the way is clear for the parade.
Why have the stalls moved? This is probably the most asked question. Firstly the main reason is safety, as the stalls take
up much of the space on the side walk people are forced to stand on the road during the parade, this creates a dangerous
situation, and I am sure you all understand that safety is paramount. Secondly we tried to include a market area up town to
compensate the loss of street stalls, it was designed to get people in town to not only get a bargain but to support the local
businesses many of which opened especially for the day this unfortunately was not well supported by locals so by moving
the stalls down to the club we hope to condense the activities to get more people involved and make organising a little
easier. I would like to stress that everyone should still be shopping local this Xmas, remember it is the local businesses
support that make our parade possible.
What is happening at the community concert? Plenty of local talent will be performing, Carol singing, novelty races for all
the family, stalls, meals and bar facilities. We also will have the “volcano” the latest inflatable obstacle challenge.
On a different note everyone must have noticed the hive of activity that is our play ground, Anne and her busy bees have
been working hard at getting this redone and will be having the grand official opening on parade day. I hope everyone will
be there to show our support for all the hard work that has gone into the park and the parade.
Now to the schedule for the parade.
5.00pm Opening of the park
5.00pm Floats start to gather at works depot, please all be there by 5.30
6.00pm Christmas parade
7.15pm Community concert, stalls and family activities.
Any problems, questions or offers for help just give me a call or pop into Urban Fringe and leave your name with Anne.
Look forward to seeing you all on parade day

Get to know . . . Gale and John Albert

So in 1993 when John Albert, who was an ANZ bank

missing off the price he was interested.
He’d been with the bank for 27 years - since he’d left

His wife Gale, who says she’s more impulsive than John,

expecting that he’d actually do it.
“He found out all about it,” she says, “and then didn’t do
anything. Three months later he saw the ad again with

This time they took action, came to Maungaturoto and

MAUNGATUROTO STUDENT FINDS WINGS

Maungaturoto student, Bryn Seager, will soon be winging his way across to the United States on a trip of a
lifetime.
Cadet Sergeant Seager, aged 17, has been named as one of only eight Air Training Corps cadets from New
Zealand who will be taking part in the overseas exchange to four different countries next year.
Cdt Sgt Seager will be visiting California in the U.S. in July 2007, along with 70 other cadets and escorts,
with the aim of learning all he can about aviation and meeting cadets from all around the world.
The International Air Cadets Exchange is only open to air cadets and began 42 years ago.
It is aimed at offering the opportunity for cadets who have an interest in aviation to meet others like-
minded young people from around the world and to develop leadership with a global perspective.
Cdt Sgt Seager has been a member of 20 squadron in Whangarei for about two years and spent a year in 57
squadron in Dargaville before that.
He said once he learnt of his selection, his main job was to sort out a passport. The next big task is to get
out and raise funds for the trip which will cost about $3500.
So far, he has helped cater for a Lions dinner in Maungaturoto and has other ideas for raising the funds
which he needs to cover air travel.
Other expenses, such as accommodation and visits while in the United States are the responsibility of the
host country.
Cdt Sgt Seager recently learnt that one of his cousins went to Holland last year as part of the exchange.
“Once I found out about all the places she visited and friends she had made, I really wanted to find out
more about IACE,” he said.
Visits to air bases, emergency services and taking in some of the usual tourist attractions are sure to be on
the cards for the cadets who will also be mixing with other international exchangees.
The IACE has members from 19 countries.
(Any offers of donations or for work to help fundraise would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Bryn
or his parents on ph.431-8494 for more information.)

William Cottrell – Book Signing and Author Talk

Furniture of the New Zealand Colonial Era

The Kauri Museum is holding a Book Signing and Author Talk on the 29th November 2006 at 1.30pm.
William Cottrell, author of Furniture of the New Zealand Colonial Era will be speaking about his book and
his work as a collector and restorer of some of New Zealand’s rarest furniture. Pieces from The Kauri Mu-
seum collection that feature in the book will be on display.
Rich with fascinating information and lavishly illustrated with more than 1500 photographs, the book tells
the detailed stories behind a huge range of furniture — from the quirky and ungainly pieces made by the
not-so-accomplished, to the pieces made by the likes of Anton Seuffert, pieces which are, quite simply,
works of art. Much of the furniture of this period was produced for functional rather than aesthetic reasons
and few pieces remain; those that do are rare and precious collectors' items. Stunning colour plates within
the book capture all sorts of rarities from the innovative to the beautiful. Three stunning pieces from The
Kauri Museum’s kauri furniture collection feature in this book. A Mottled Kauri Wardrobe (circa 1880), with
inlaid rewarewa, totara and puriri is a magnificent example of colonial furniture, on display in the Volun-
teers Hall. A rare Kauri Table and a Fretwork Writing Cabinet (circa 1890) are both on display in the Mu-
seum’s newest exhibit, the replica Boarding House.
The Kauri Museum are delighted to be involved with the launch of this book. “It is very exciting that Wil-
liam is coming to The Kauri Museum to talk. I have been dealing with him for many years and he has
such an amazing knowledge of New Zealand colonial furniture. How lucky are we that he is coming to
Northland.” Bet Nelley – Collections Manager
The most lavishly illustrated book to be published in New Zealand in the last decade, this is a work of
timeless appeal not only for fans of antiques and history but for all who appreciate a truly beautiful book.

FARM LIVING
An alarming late night encounter
Our pet lambs Ashley and Mary-Kate are here to stay thanks to a bizarre late night appari-
tion.
I decided the pair would retain special privileges at three in the morning when I was feeding
Cliff, a lamb who didn’t make the grade.
I was crouched over Cliff with warm lamb milk dribbling up the sleeve of my dressing gown
when I had a vivid vision of a seriously sloshed stock broker at a party in London gnawing on
one of Cliff’s ribs.
The detail was extraordinary. He was overweight (I noticed he ate all the fat) and carried
his excess round the hips like a certain former Prime Minister.
He wore a pin-striped suit, a finely striped white shirt with the top button undone and a loos-
ened tie bearing a club emblem. Between chomping on Cliff’s chop this glutton (let’s call
him Hugo with apologies to all Hugos) slurped really expensive champagne. I didn’t see the
bottle, but fancy it was Perrier Jouet from one of those classy bottles with embossed flowers.
Hair: mousy brown and floppy. Face: a tad flabby and pale.
The only good thing about the hallucination was that rather than being in a gracious home,
Hugo was in the grotty kitchen of a grungy flat Kiwis are wont to call home during their OE.
Serves him right.
Hugo haunted me. While I was up in the night nurturing a lamb, he was gorging on bits of
Cliff in a pre-Christmas orgy with no respect for the wee creature that had given its life for
his gastronomic bliss.
A day later Cliff went to lamb heaven and I vowed to keep Mary-Kate and Ashley as pets.
This has involved training them to eat bread so they’ll stick around, fencing them out of the
section and, trickiest of all, convincing the farmer this is a good idea.
Getting Ashley to eat bread was a breeze. Mary-Kate is proving difficult, but is there any
creature alive that doesn’t like bread?
Convincing the farmer of their status as pets was harder, but at least Mary-Kate and Ashley
can produce lambs plus I suspect he’s a little bit fond of them. When he found them eyeing
his precious strawberries Rex merely shunted them into the paddock and threatened to cut
their tails off. As he’s done this to a few hundred lambs I knew I had him
Rex kindly reinforced the post and rail fence at the bottom of the paddock, but filling gaps
under the batten and wire fence was going to be tricky. I told him I planned to tie garden
mesh onto the bottom wire and fix it to the ground with huge wire staples.
He listened to my Mickey Mouse idea, sighed deeply and said, “Let me do it.”
“What a guy,” I thought dreamily until he told me two days later he had no recollection of
our conversation.
“What a guy!” I thought, with somewhat different meaning when he suggested we let the
lambs go and pray they’re too fat and woolly to slither under the fence.
So far so good.
Thanks to Rae for her contribution

WORSEL’S COUNTRY CRITTERS

See Ya Later Alligator
Gidday. I’m Big Daddy Croc and you’ve probably seen me wrestling on the Telly. And perhaps
your wonderin what a true blue Aussie battler is doin writing in Worzel’s Country Critters Column?
Well, I heard about it from a friend of mine, who’s got a web site. She’s a native Australian too, a
Black Widow. I know she wouldn’t mind me tellin ya that, she knows I like to call a spade a spade.
But I’m not writing this to talk about meself.
No, I’m writing to ya today to pay tribute to the best mate a fella ever had. I remember the first
time I met him like it was yesterday. I was dozin in the sun by my favourite swimming spot and this
bloke comes strollin down towards me like he owns the place. “Crickey,” He says “look at this fella
he’s a real beaut .” Then he rolls up his sleeves, and starts a wrestling match with me. Us Aussies re-
spect that sort of attitude and we became partners there and then. I know it didn’t always look that
way on television, but we stayed good mates right through.
Now it’d be true enough to say that up until Steve came along us crocs, hunted to near extinction
and considered by many as dangerous pests, had a pretty rough time of it. But Steve and I, we
changed all that.
I moved with Steve into town and never looked back. Yep , it’s thanks to him I became a TV star, a
regular lounge lizard. Sure there were long days splashin around and wrestlin when we were shoot-
ing the series and she’s hard yakka acting snappy after thirty ‘takes’ but there was plenty of days
off too. A steady stream of young females coming into the Crocasorium, and room service all the
way. Life was one long party by the pool. I was living off the pigs back… and it’s legs…. And it’s
bum. In fact, the whole damn Pig. I didn’t need no Barbie neither, She’d go straight into the croc pot
mate.
Well we had it all. I became the worlds most famous Crocadile and Steve became the worlds most
famous Crocodile man. One of the greats he was. Could wrestle crocs for hours and be none the
worse for it. He pinned me down a few times, I can tell ya. And he’d grab a Taipan by the tail any
day of the week A real likeable, brash, fair dinkum aussie, nice sheila for a wife and two lovely kids.
An absolutely bonza bloke. “Stick to reptiles” I recall sayin to him before he went to the Great Bar-
rier Reef, “we’ve got a good thing going here and it’s not as if your short of a quid,” Ya see, I had an
nasty feelin he’d be getting in over his head out there. And every one knows, you can’t trust fish.*
But Steve was always keen on a challenge, so he went, and the rest, as they say is history. Just
goes to show, fame and fortune are all very well but they don’t add up to much in the end. I don’t
mind admitting, we shed a few crocadile tears round here at his passing.
Though I’m not a religious sort meself there’s a few of me cobbers reckon when a good croc curls
up his toes. He gets to come back as a sheilas handbag. And who knows? maybe there’s somethin in
it, and maybe there’s somethin similar for champion blokes like Steve Irwin.
*I can endorse this, having myself made appointments with fish only to have them not turn up.
