Instruction Rationale Statement

Standard 8- Instructional Strategies:

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to

develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply

knowledge in meaningful ways. (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg. 10).

Artifact: Observation #6, instruction

Rational Statement:

This artifact is my observation paper discussing lesson instruction. Throughout the

lesson, the teacher explained the lesson in different ways to his students. He read a book about

fractions, then used colored tiles, then used the students themselves and asked them questions

such as “what fraction of students are wearing black shoes today?”. These different approaches

and models give the students the opportunity to learn from different methods. This also gives the

students a chance to show that they understand the concept. I related this artifact to standard 8.i.5

which states “The teacher provides multiple models and representations of concepts and skills

with opportunities for learners to demonstrate their knowledge through a variety of products and

performances.” (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg. 11). I chose this standard

because I observed my cooperating teacher giving his students different models and

representations of the concepts and skills that he is teaching them. He used different methods and

manipulatives for his students to get a better understanding of the concept he is instructing,

including the book, the tiles and the students themselves.

This artifact has taught me that it is important to come up with more than one method to

teach a lesson. Every student learns differently, and it is the teacher’s job to cater to their

students’ needs. I have seen my cooperating teacher explain a lesson in different ways, using

different wording, new examples and hands-on activities. I have seen the students thrive from the

different ways a lesson was taught to them. Giving the students these different models and

representations allows them to understand the concept better or grasp the skills in a different way

than before.

I can use this artifact in the future to gain more knowledge on different ways to instruct a

lesson. It is the teachers’ job to come up with different ways to present a lesson to the students.

Giving the students different models, manipulatives and representations of the concepts being

taught can really benefit the students. The students will also be able to demonstrate through these

different models and activities that they are understanding the skills being taught and can further

their skills on the concept.
