Christmas Spending Habits

They said Christmas is the season to be jolly but you can also say that “ ‘tis the season to spend
money” because this time of the year Filipinos spend more than any other holidays. Filipinos love to buy
so much and spend money on things that are sometimes not really needed instead of saving money for
emergencies. Christmas bonus and 13th month pay does not last that long because of certain traditions
that we have during Christmas. What are effects of too much shopping spree of an individual Filipino?
Why Filipinos very eager to spend so much in yuletide season?

Excessive spending on Christmas may bring good outcome for the economy but not in individual
Filipino. Filipinos will not give up the opportunity to celebrate Christmas by having grandiose
celebrations and spend money on expensive things. Because of our annual traditions and the high effect
of Christmas spirit, we our not guided by our rationality when it comes to making decisions like decisions
in buying ingredients, clothes and etc. We may feel good at this time of the year by having so much
money because of Christmas bonuses, 13th month pay, or ‘aguinaldos’ from out godparents or relatives
but we will feel its effects after the high of Christmas spirit is over like having no savings for
emergencies, no investment and having no money to spend on things that will be necessary in the
future. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Philippines has one of the lowest savings rate in
southeast asia, because Filipinos are more indulge in spending money rather than saving it. Yes, this kind
of season may be good for the economy but our families will benefit more if we use our money wisely
and not indulge ourselves in this kind of bad spending habit.

It is not bad to enjoy and celebrate once in a while but we should also know how to use our
money wisely and not just go with the tide of spending too much just because most of the people are
into it. We should also consider our future and always be ready in times of financial struggles while still
enjoying our most awaited holidays, but how can we do that? It is simple, we should always practice
‘Income – savings = expense’ where saving should always be prioritized before spending. We should
also learn how to budget our money wisely to enjoy this amazing season without the worry for the
future financial dilemmas.

How does Pilipino celebrate their Christmas? Christmas is one of the awaited celebration that
Pilipino celebrate. It’s the day that our Jesus Christ was born. The day that everyone will never forget.
Pilipino have different way in celebrating their christmas because it’s a holiday it will be a rest day for
works and to school.

December 25 is the day that we celebrate christmas. We can notice that it’s a rainy season and
the air is cold. We can never forget that when we are still in kinder, elementary, and high school we
celebrate christmas party because after that is a long vacation for the students, even employees are
celebrating that. We feel christmas is near when we hear christmas songs, some decoration in the
house, even the carolling of the children in every house. Starting December 16 we are going to church to
attend the mass that we called Simbang Gabi. Pilipino are busy preparing the food for noche buena, it is
the time when family are gather for midnight dinner. Some Pilipino are going for a vacation when
christmas came. We can also notice that every December some are stranded to traffic it all because
many people are going back to their family just to be together in christmas. We are celebrating
christmas in a simple way even though the food is few and no give at all it’s fine with us as long as we
are together and we feel and share love through action and words. We experience receiving gifts to our
godmother/godfather. Now that food and gifts are expensive some Pilipino are spending or saving
money just to be ready for christmas it’s the effect of the inflation rate to us this year.

Christmas is not about the material things given to us, the importance is we are happy and we
feel and give love to each other. Although some people did not afford to buy gifts what the moat
important is the present of love they give. It’s not also about receiving but giving.
