to the world of

OS 12...
First steps with this
software.
This presentation is not a
manual, and it will not save you
to check the OS 12 manual as
well!
To reach the manual, press F1
with the OS 12 software
running.
Compatibility:
Some screenshots may still show
older versions of OS 11/OS 12.
Characteristics are maily the
latest OmniScan version.
The terms used in OS 12:
• Jobs,
• Scans and
• Clips.
A “job” in OS 12 is the project you
are currently working in, with all its
settings and images.
Jobs, their content an their settings
can be saved and opened again at
any time.
With clips, we define the areas which we
want to save as images.
In this example, I show three clips (red,
green and blue).
The area of Clip 1 is defined by the
red frame, the respective processed
clip is shown in the thumbnail left
The area of Clip 2 is defined by the
green frame, the respective
processed clip is shown in the
thumbnail left, etc...
If you click to a thumbnail, the clip
image will be displayed in the main
display area.
OS 12 Basic Module allows two
clips.
With the Imaging Kit, you will
receive as many clips as you wish.
The “current scan pic” is always a
general overview of the scan area.
With the scroll wheel or with the
highlighted icons, we can change the
size of the image in the display.
Switch on your scanner then
doubleclick the OmniScan 12
icon in your desktop.
This will be your first impression of
OS 12 after the SW is launched.
As we don’t need the Express Mode
now, we’ll just close this window...
... to the start view, where we click to “New”.
To continue, you need to enter
a job name.
OS 11/OS 12 will use its default parameters as
long as you don’t select another one.
Instead of using default
parameters, you can also
browse for *.ojp files in
your network.
After having entered a job
name, we’ll reach this view.
At the very first launch of OS 11/OS 12, first
go the OmniScan register to select general
settings about OmniScan.
For our purposes, we need to switch from
the easy mode to the expert mode.
Then select the language which is most
convenient for your client …
Consider to deactivate “Renew clip
immediately” ...
You can now make any changes on the clip
area or its settings, and they will only be
processed and saved when you click the red
scan button.
If this switch is activated, the SW will
remember the size and position of a control
window.
Decide here whether you wish to see the
“Insert image” in the thumbnails, ...
Create thumbnails can only be changed
when no job is loaded. – When it is
deactivated, image names will be showed,
no thumbnails.
Here we can indicate a directory where jobs are
saved by default, and the job name which is
proposed as job name by default.
Further general Omniscan settings can be
selected in the extended settings.
Interpolation/aliasing method for image
display on the screen.
Size of the trackers in the clips.
Most of the changes will only become active
after you confirmed by OK, shut down and
relaunched OS 12!
Switching from Easy to Expert will work
without closing and restarting the SW.
The Easy Mode has
considerably less
settings than the
Expert Mode.
Private settings will be saved in the User
settings of the User (Frank_Epple);
Shared settings will be saved in the
Programme Data folder.
You can select if configuration files should be
saved as Private or shared directories.
Private settings will be saved in the User
settings of the User;
Shared settings will be saved in the
Programme Data section.
The Bookscan Mode, appearing first in
OS 11.10, resembles the former OS
10.
To switch to the Book Scan
mode, you should not be in
an active job…
Omniscan settings and select
the Book scan mode…
The bookscan mode only
allows two clips, for the left
and right page.

Clip settings, Meta Data,
Job Completion, and

In the clip settings, we define how to treat
the image found inside the selected clip
area.
Select the color mode you wish to
receive, …
… the file format for the image
you want to create, ...
… define the resolution of your
output image, ...

case the output has to be
interpolated, ...
… these settings allow you to
preposition document sizes in the
scan area, ...
… indicate whether your clip is for
the left side, for the right side, or a
full page, ...
… and switch on the units for
below position/size indication.
If you want to create lots of clips, you
also can organize them in groups.
In the latest OS versions,
default settings are that
clip 1 is for a left side,
clip 2 for a right side.
If you don´t assign
pages, book pages will
be handled as one
page.
Automatic adaption is a tool that works
with Perfect Book.
The frames will now always be
locked to the document as per your
choice…
…independent from
the size of the
document, it will be
cut according the
settings made.
Automatic size lock
Is this check box set, the size of the the clip will be fixed to the side of the first clip
of this clip number, that will be really saved. If you afterwards try to change the
clip size, a message will pop up, reminding that the size is locked. If at the same
time automatic adaption is active, the position will be adapted, but the size
remains unchanged. The clip will be centered above the found position.
Keep aspect ratio
Is this hook set, the aspect ratio (relation between height and width is kept)
Modifications of the clip with the mouse always change both, width and height at
the same time.
Dependening on the settings

“Adjust borders with mouse” if
active: Moving frames will modify
the values in the fields.
“Switch off adaption if tracker is moved”
Works only with perfect book. If active, the
automatic adaption is off for subsequent
scans, if the clip has been moved with the
mouse.
If you select adjust trackers, the clips
will be set back to the positions, how
perfect book has detected them. If in
addition “adjust border with the
mouse” is active, a second clip will be
adjusted according to the first.

To create a new clip, either select “New Clip” in
the clip settings menu, …
… or click right on
the “Current scan”
screen to receive
this menu, where
you must select
“new”.
This menu is also
my favourite way to
reach the settings
or the filter settings
menus!
You can reach
clip/filter/extended
scanner settings
also via these icons.
To save your settings, either click to “save
settings” or to “ok”.
Clicking to “Filter”…
… we reach the list of filters
and tools.
To select a tool, click to
it then click “add”.
To reset any tool to default
settings, click the undo button.
With “Add clip”, I can add a clip to
another one .
The idea of the “add clip” function is to offer you
to include a reference to the image.
“Add ruler” allows to add a ruler
right and below of the image.
In the ”Add/cut border filter”, we can add a
border to a document,
Of course, we can also cut a border.
Another setting allows you to select a fixed
image size, however without adjusting the
scanned image to this image size.
It will serve well to paste a smaller scanned
image to a larger paper size.
With “Automatic Print”, you
can set up how to print out
selected clips.
“Automatic Print” is not
included in the Imaging Kit.
To get best b/w results with Omniscan, you
should go through the “Binarization” filter.
You can select different methods to binarize the
image.
With the “Cut” tool, I can cut out the document
from the black background.
This is a very good example for
the tool...
More options for this tool are
available in this area.
The “Deskew” tool will correct the position
of a document.
“Despeckle” is a tool to further “clean”
black and white images.
“Flip image” does mirror
the scanned image
horizontally or vertically.
With the graduation curve, I can
set black points or white points, ...
... or you really work with the curve. This
tool will be applied to all the images
always the same way!
Either way, forget about true colours if
you work with the graduation curve!
“Integrate Color Correction” allows you to really
convert images to a different colour space.
“Median” smoothes out the
image.
Eventually, clients complain that a page be
not white if scanned with Omniscan.
For such clients, we integrated
the Paperwhite filter.
The filter will analyze the
image and process a high
contrast image.
Using the Paperwhite
filter, you will have a
much whiter
background, but keep
in mind that you lost
“true colour”!
“Print space” will look for printed area in a
document with sufficient contrast.
“Print space” will look for printed area in a
document with sufficient contrast.
If an order sheet contains barcode,
OS 12 can read this via the barcode
filter.
This is also an extra tool, not
included in the Imaging Kit.
With the “Rotate” tool, you can rotate the
output image in an indicated orientation.
Saturation increases the colour intensity.
However it is time consuming, and forget about
true colours!
The scale filter handles
settings for resizing of
clips (e.g., your original
is A1 and you want to
resize it to A4).
“Sharpen” is one tool for sharpening
images…
The Filterassistant will remind you in
this case that Unsharp Mask may be
the better tool for sharpening.
With the stamp function, you can add
a property mark or text to the image.
A stamp can be added to each
clip.
Select “Stamp filename” and
browse for the file, …
…next select here where on the
document you want to have the
stamp.
If you select “Stamp text”and
enter a text...
… this text will be displayed on
any clip with this setting.
“Smooth” is a tool to smoothen
the original image.
“Unsharp mask” is the best sharpening tool
in Omniscan.
Make sure
there is a value
in each field.
A number of tools (Filterstack) will be
handled one after the other, in the
order you selected them.
The preview image will only give you
a preview of the highlighted filter, not
of the whole stack.
Please keep in
mind, and train our
clients accordingly,
“raw” with unsharp mask
that OS images are
raw images on
output, and tools
must be applied!.
We can use tools immediately after the scan,
and the processed images will be saved
immediately, …
… or during Job Completion, if you
deactivate this switch.
… OS 12 allows you to select filterstacks of
other clips to process the active clip.
Likewise, also the geometry of previous
clips can be used.

To “separate” pages with PerfectBook, you
need to set up respective clips and assign the
page direction (left – right)!
Scan settings have to do with the scan
mode and with the hardware. Consequently,
the “more” menu will be different from
scanner to scanner.
With “Auto”(matic) deactivated, you can
select the scan resolution in this menu.
If “Auto” is switched on, OS 12 will look for
the highest selection in the clip settings, and
will scan accordingly.
Likewise, if “Auto” is disabled in the
color mode, I can switch to scan color,
or grey scale only .
We offer you a fully calibrated scanner. – If
you change brightness and/or contrast, you
risk the settings of this calibration.
OS 12 allows you to use all filters on the

Meta data can be any information on the
processed media.
This feature may become very useful in
connection with reference data bases.
Metadata settings can also be used
for very special counting rules.
Create two items called “Side”, clip specific

Enter “recto” for one clip, “verso” for the
other one (or “front” and “back”).
Use this entry as part of the filename/path
in the image file copy. Using a backslash
here, will result in a new subdirectory
during output.

file name to use.
It is possible to upload
information to a ftp server.
You can also define the parameters
for a searchable PDF in this area.
If you click “ok” after your selection(s), OS 12 will
process your images accordingly, and return to
the start view afterwards.
If you click “close” after your selection(s), OS 12
will return to the start view without porcessing
anything.
With “Abort job”, you abort the job and delete all
data about it from the hard disk! So be careful
about it!
If you select “Start…” OS 12 will open a new job
with same settings as the settings you used for
this job.
OS 12 allows you to save
