• Morning work: (making connections) Vocabulary builder.

◦ Give each child a dime and tell children the name and value of the coin. Ask:
How can you describe this coin? Repeat this process for the nickel and penny.
• I DO: Go Math Digital: Listen and Draw.
◦ Materials: play coins (dimes,nickles,pennies)
◦ Distribute play coins to children. Identify each coin by name and discuss what is
on the two sides of each coin. Discuss the value of each coin
◦ Say: Sort the coins. Put the coins that are alike in the same circle on the page.
Then draw the coins inside the circles.
◦ Show children how to draw the coins by making a circle for each coin and writing
1,5, or 10 in it. Do not use the cent symbol.
▪ How are a dime, a nickel, and a penny alike? How are they different?
▪ Does the size of a coin show the value of the coin? Explain
• I DO: Model and draw: Mp7 look for and make use of structure. work through the model
with children.
◦ Write 10cents on the board. What could we tell someone about this? (discuss with
children that they are couting the number of cents, not coins)
◦ Look at the group of 3 dimes and the group of 3 nickels. How is the counting of
the cents different for these two groups?
◦ Look at the group of coins at the bottom of the box. Describe how to count on to
find the total value of these coins.
