Assignment 6A

One: Independent thinker who understands the Healthcare Market

The leader of a healthcare organization should have deep understanding of their market,
including the strengths and weaknesses of their organization as well as the competition. Hey
also should surround themselves with the best team possible to assist in this goal. An example
is a hospital executive who realizes that with their resources they can’t be everything to
everybody so they decide to specialize in a particular specialty and strive to become the best at
that specialty.

Two: Passionate about serving the needs of customers.

The patient is the customer and primary focus and thus all energies and efforts need to be
directed on the patient. The patient’s experience can these days easily make it online to review
sites, be communicated to friends and family (who are all potential patients one day) so it is
now more than ever importantly to relentlessly focus on the patient experience. An example is
Jeff Bezos and his near obsessive focus on customer experience for all users of Amazon.

Three: Change agent of their organization

With compressed profit margins and accelerated technological disruptions change is the only
constant and a leader must have to be able to adapt. Continually. An example of this is
Microsoft recently cutting ties with their Windows phone realizing that competing in this
market is not worth the effort and thus focusing on other businesses.

Four: Ability to motivate and inspire

Clear articulation and communication motivates and inspires all members of an organization.
This inspires others to do their best work. To build off the Jeff Bezos example in quality two
above: Jeff Bezos clearly articulates the goal of creating the best customer experience possible
as often and near obsessively as possible. This in turn inspires his employees to execute this
goal.

Five: Runs a lean, high quality organization.

Plan short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies and seek metrics to back up each step and
milestone. An example of this is to do a monthly, quarterly and yearly plan for each manager in
the organization and compare the performance to measured data.
