NOTE: This is not a letter of reference and will not be distributed by the WERKLUND SCHOOL OF EDUCATION to potential employers,
however potential employers may ask for this assessment from the student directly.
The purpose of this eight-week field experience is to focus on their ability to extend and deepen their understanding classroom learning as they
move towards meeting the requirements of interim certification. Upon successful completion of this Field Experience, Student Teachers are
prepared to assume the full pedagogical and professional responsibilities of a practicing teacher. Under the guidance of a Partner Teacher, the
Student Teacher has planned and assumed responsibility for 80%-100% of classroom teaching responsibilities in his/her placement classroom.
The following Narrative Assessment should address the Student Teacher’s participation in the course as a whole as well as their growth and
readiness in relation to the TQS outcomes. Finally, an assessment of the Student Teacher’s readiness to take on the role of teacher, including
evidence of professionalism and collegiality, should be described.

I was fortunate to have been able to observe Emily during her final teaching practicum at Olds
Elementary school in Olds Alberta. I had also observed her Field Experience II and III rounds and have been
impressed by the amount of growth in Emily’s teaching. I would observe Emily teaching math, social studies and
science to a very diverse group of grade 4 students. This did create some challenging situations for Emily which she
handled well and with ease.
Emily has a quiet presence about her and has qualities that has helped her adopt a sound vision of
teaching that through this experience has proven to be successful. Her reflections have been very intuitive and honest.
She cares about the work she is doing and about the students that she is teaching. One of her strengths is in her
reflections as she would often comment on ways to improve or she would actively seek other strategies to enhance a
lesson. Emily has a passion for teaching and a willingness to learn which has fostered growth .
Emily is well planned for each lesson. She accepted some teaching challenges and did a great job in
implementing appropriate strategies that moved lessons forward. What she didn’t know about certain aspects of
curriculum she would find out quickly and apply effectively. Students were engaged in her lessons which were creative
and purposeful. I was impressed on how quickly Emily gained confidence in her teaching to be very independent and
in charge. Her mentor also felt very comfortable in leaving the classroom knowing and trusting Emily’s abilities as a
classroom teacher.
Emily continues to work on her knowledge of curriculum and also improving her skills in assessment
practices. She has gained valuable experience in both areas and has proven that she is diligent in the pursuit of a better
understanding. She has an attitude that fosters growth.
I believe that Emily will prove to be an asset to the teaching profession. She has developed a strong
sense for learners and has demonstrated confidence that enhanced the teaching experience. I look forward to what
Emily will bring to the profession.
