7.8. New: Shielding and Purging Gas for Duplex Stainless Steels
[R] The following are additional requirements for the shielding and back purging of duplex stainless steel
welds:
1) Welding procedures shall be qualified using the same gases for arc shielding and back purging that
will be used in production.
2) The shielding gas for the GTAW process shall be 99.99 percent argon or a mixture of argon and
nitrogen with the maximum nitrogen content not exceeding 2 percent.
3) [A] The use of nitrogen for back purging of shop or field welds shall be approved by the Owner's
Engineer.
4) The use of gas mixtures containing hydrogen for shielding, orifice, or purging gases is not permitted.
a) The maximum qualified production wall thickness shall not exceed 120 percent (1.2T) of the
thickness of the test coupon used during qualification. The minimum qualified production wall
thickness is the test coupon thickness (T).
b) Any change in the heat input (measured by Amps x Volts x 60 divided by travel speed) greater
than ±10 percent of the value used during qualification.
2) Weld Position: The procedure shall be qualified in the vertical-up position (3G). If welding is to be
performed only in the flat (1G) position, then only qualification in the 1G position is required. All
vertical weld progression shall be upward.
3) Ferrite to Austenite Ratio:
a) Per ASTM E 562, the ferrite to austenite ratio in the deposited weld metal and heat-affected zone
(HAZ) shall be determined on a polished and etched cross section of the weld coupon at a
magnification of 500x. The number of fields and points per field shall be in agreement with the
guidance provided in the 10% Relative Accuracy column found in Table 3 of ASTM E 562.
b) The following three areas shall be evaluated and reported in the PQR:
i) Root pass
ii) Mid-thickness
iii) Cover pass
c) Ferrite content shall be within the following ranges:
i) Weld metal 30 to 65 percent
ii) HAZ 40 to 65 percent
iii) Base metal 40 to 60 percent
4) [*] Hardness testing: For Wet H2S Service as described in GP 18-10-01, hardness testing shall be
performed on the PQR test coupon. Readings shall be taken in Vickers with a 10 kg load. At least
eight readings at a depth of 2.5 mm below the inside and below the outside surfaces shall be recorded
for the base metal, HAZ, and weld deposit.
a) For UNS S31803 and S32205, the measured hardness shall not be above 310 HV average, with
no reading over 320 HV.
b) For all other grades of duplex stainless steel, the maximum and average hardness values shall be
specified by the Owner's Engineer.
5) Corrosion and Impact Testing: Either the corrosion or impact test as described below shall be
performed to the PQR sample:
a) Corrosion Test:
i) One test specimen that includes the weld, HAZ, and base metal shall be removed from each
procedure qualification test coupon and tested in accordance with ASTM A 923 Method C.
Acceptance criteria shall be per ASTM A 923 except that no pitting is allowed. The Rapid
Screening Test method per ASTM A 923 is not permitted.
ii) Third-party laboratories used for the testing shall have prior experience with duplex stainless
steel testing using ASTM G 48 A or ASTM A 923 C methods. Vendor shall submit to the
Owner the laboratory name and qualifications, to be used for qualification and production
testing.
iii) If the specimen does not meet the acceptance criteria, then a new specimen may be taken and
retested. The Owner must be notified before proceeding with retesting.
b) Impact Test:
RFCH For Company Use Only Version 3.0.0
i) [A] For Charpy V notch impact tests of the weld metal and HAZ, three specimens for each
location are required. The following values for grade UNS S32205 are required for full-size
specimens. Acceptance values for other grades of duplex stainless steel shall be agreed upon
with the Owner's Engineer.
a) Weld Metal: 25 ft-lbs (34 J) average and 20 ft-lbs (27 J) minimum at −40°F (−40°C)
b) HAZ: 40 ft-lbs (54 J) average and 32 ft-lbs (43 J) minimum at −40°F (−40°C)
ii) The orientation of standard size specimens shall be per ASME SEC VIII D1, UG84. In
addition, the weld metal impact specimen shall be removed from the T/2 (mid-wall) position.
Furthermore, the HAZ impact specimen location may need to be adjusted to ensure the notch
is completely in the HAZ but should be as close as feasible to the T/2 position.
iii) The lateral expansion shall be 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) minimum.
6) Heavy Wall Equipment:
a) For duplex weldments with a wall thickness over 1 in. (25 mm) the impact test, using full-size
specimens, and the corrosion test are required.
b) For duplex weldments with a wall thickness over 2 in. (50 mm), full-size impact specimens shall
be removed for testing at the location of the first weld pass and at the 1/4T position.
c) Impact testing as required in Section 11.3, Item (5b) of this GP shall be done for all performance
qualification tests.
2) [R] Production Test Plates: Each heat of plate used to fabricate shell segments and heads shall be
subjected to production testing. Test plates shall be made from the same heat as the base material and
installed as run-off tabs at the end of longitudinal weld seams. The test plate shall be of sufficient
size to equal the cooling gradient of the component. The samples shall be subjected to ferrite-to-
austenite ratio testing as required in Section 11.3, Item (3) and impact testing as required in Section
11.3, Item (5b) of this GP.
5) [R] Weld overlay thickness shall be verified by actual measurement of the exposed edge at weld joint
preparations. Questions regarding overlay thickness shall be resolved by ultrasonic thickness
measurements if necessary.
Examination methods and acceptance standards shall be in accordance with ASME SEC VIII D1 MA
APP 8. Any unacceptable indications shall be cause for liquid penetrant examination of the entire
surface of the overlay or back cladding.
2) [*] [R] Unless otherwise specified by the Owner's Engineer, the final surface of weld overlays, back
cladding, and welds joining attachments to weld overlays or integral cladding shall be 100 percent
liquid penetrant examined with a water soluble penetrant following hydrostatic testing. However, for
heat exchangers, 100 percent liquid penetrant examination may be performed prior to hydrostatic
testing.
a) Examination and acceptance standards shall be per ASME SEC VIII D1 MA APP 8.
b) Defective areas shall be repaired and reexamined.
