Modals verbs

We use modal verbs to show if we believe something is certain, probable or


possible (or not). We also use modals to do things like talking about ability,
asking permission making requests and offers.

They are:

Uses:

Can: It means ability or possibility. Example: I can play the guitar/ I can do it for
you.

Could: It means ability or possibility in past. Example: I could play tennis when I
was a child/I couldn’t do it for you.

It also means possibilities in future. Example: You could go to the travel if you save
money.

And you can use it in question for a formal way to ask. Example: Could you pass
me the pencil please?

May: It means possibilities in future. Example: I may go to your house next week.

It’s also use for give permission or instructions. Example: the exam is going to
start; you may save your cellphone now!

May it’s the more polite word ask. Example: May I leave now?

Might: it use to say possibilities in present and future. Example: If I go out without
an umbrella, I might wet for the rain.
You can use it too to ask for permissions and make polite petitions like may.
Example: Might I leave now?

Will: It is use for do the structure of future time. Example: I will learn English at
Colombo.

Shall: This word is the polite form to say phrases in future. Example: My boss shall
be happy to see you.

It’s also use to make offers, suggestions, ask about options o preferences.
Example: Shall we go to the cinema or the museum?

Should: It means an obligation or recommendation. Example: you should study for


the exam.

Ought to: it is a synonym of should, buy less common. Example: You ought to be
earlier at work.

Must: It means an obligation, necessity or prohibition. Example: You must go to


the school.

It’s also use to assume something or possibility. Example: Danilo didn’t come to
work. He must be sick.

Would: Is use to ask for something politely or to say a preference. Example: I


would like to go to Canada in a future. Would you like something to drink?

As a group choose a job to develop. Each student must develop a paragraph
about that job. It means that each student will select one paragraph, one color and
develop it as in these instructions.

Paragraph Four: Say why you dislike it

I do not like getting up early. The working day seems long...

Sometimes I dislike this job because I have to get up early and I’m a little bit
sleepyheads. And before that my turns seems eternal because they are since 12 to
14 hours. My body is passing me facture for my lack of sleep, I have sleep
disorders, anxiety, changes of mood and I starting to suffer of high pressure. Look
at me! Look my eye bags!
The other thing why I dislike this job, it’s that I don’t have social life! I am too busy
in the day to say hi to my friends and for my long turns I go out too late, so
everyone is sleepy!
