THE PUBLICATION DATE
OF EUTHYMIUS ZIGABENUS’S DOGMATIC PANOPLY

The Dogmatic Panoply (Πανοπλία δογματική) is a compilation of


anti-heretical writings that the monk Euthymius Zigabenus assem-
bled by order of Emperor Alexis  I Comnenus1. A  passage in the
second half of its text is chronologically significant2. It is found in all
manuscript copies of the Panoply which we have been able to consult3
and occurs in the following context :
Section  XII of the Panoply, « About the Holy Spirit », ends with a
subsection (παράτιτλος) arguing, « Against the [Adherents] of Old
Rome, That the Holy Spirit Proceeds Only from the Father and Not
Also from the Son »4 . In this appendix, a short treatise attributed to
Patriarch Photius is followed by two paragraphs (« chapters ») marked

ends with the words « this argument belongs to the shrewd mind
of the most wise emperor  – for he once used it in dispute with the
archbishop of Milan » (τοῦτο τὸ λῆμμα τῆς ἀγχινοίας ἐστὶ τοῦ
συνετωτάτου βασιλέως· τούτῳ γὰρ ἐχρήσατό ποτε κατὰ τῶν
Μεδιολάνων ἐπισκόπου διαλεγόμενος). The bishop in question is
none other than Peter Grossolano, who discussed the Filioque with
Emperor Alexis and several Greek theologians during a visit to Con-
stantinople7. This occurred in the spring of 1113 8 . The Dogmatic Pano-
ply was therefore completed after that date (the expression ἐχρήσατό
ποτε implies some distance in time) and probably (as Antonio Rigo
has pointed out) before November 1114 9 .
Even if not done single-handedly10 , the browsing and excerpting
required in order to produce a large compendium doubtless took
more than a year11. The Panoply may have been commissioned (as
Anna Comnene seems to indicate) in connection with the trial of the

Bogomil Basil, now thought to have taken place round 109912. Its
ultimate publication in 1113-1114 falls within a series of anti-heretical
enterprises that mark Alexis Conmenus’ reign (1081-1118)13 .

The Panoply’s text, as yet unavailable in a critical scholarly edition14 ,
survives in over seventy manuscript codices15 . In one of these, signed
by the scribe George Pamphilus, the two paragraphs (« chapters ») dis-
cussed above are accompanied by a series of metrical annotations in
the adjacent page margins (Fig. 1)16 . To the best of our knowledge, such
glosses are not present in any other copy of the Panoply17. Written in
Pampilus’ hand, they clarify the heading Ἑτέρου τὰ ὑποτεταγμένα
δύο κεφάλαια by attributing the first paragraph to Euthymius Zigab-
enus and the second to Emperor Alexis :
Τίς οὗτος ; Εὐθύμιος, οὗ κλέος μέγα
ἐν ὀρθοδόξοις καὶ σοφοῖς μονοτρόποις,
ὁ Ζιγαβηνός, τήνδε τὴν Πανοπλίαν
ὁ συντεταχὼς εὐφυῶς τῶν Δογμάτων 18 .
Who is this [writer] ? – Euthymius Zigabenus, whose fame among the
orthodox and wise monks is great, and who cleverly compiled the pres-
ent Dogmatic Panoply.

A brilliant thought of [our] pious crown-bearer.
Ὅρα τὸ λῆμμα τοῦ σοφοῦ βασιλέως,
Ἀλεξίου μοι τοῦ φιλευσεβεστάτου.
Mark the argument of my wise, most pious emperor Alexis.
The verses Τίς οὗτος; Εὐθύμιος, οὗ κλέος μέγα etc. are marked,
in a different hand and ink, as being « by Pamphilus » (Τοῦ Παμ-
φίλου). In the lower margin of the page, the same supplementary
hand has added a statement of modesty :
Τοῦ Ζιγαβηνοῦ·
Ποῖον κλέος ; Πέπαυσο, μὴ γίνου κόλαξ.
[Verses] by Zigabenus :
What fame ? ! Stop ! Do not be a f latterer !
Both annotations are, as far as we can see, unique to this particular
copy of the Dogmatic Panoply19 and strongly suggest that it was person-
ally inspected by Zigabenus. If so, it contains an authorised text. Sev-
eral other codices20 present a somewhat different version of the work :
– Section XI has been shortened 21 ;
– « Against the [Adherents] of Old Rome » (TLG  4040.005) forms
not an appendix to Section XII but a separate Section XIII (Τίτλος
ιγ´), and the following sections are renumbered accordingly22 ;
– The text of this new Section  XIII is arranged somewhat differ-
ently, ending with καὶ τίς ἐπιζητεῖ διδάσκαλον ἄλλον, εἰ μὴ προ-
φανῶς μέμηνεν ;
– Section XIV (renumbered from XIII) ends with Gregory of Nyssas’
words πῶς εἰκὸς τὸν τριτημόριον ἐκεῖνον τοῦ Ἀπολιναρίου θεὸν τὸν

σαρκώδη θάνατον ὑπομεῖναι (CPG  3144) 23 and lacks several excerpts
from other church fathers which are found in Zigabenus’ authorised
text24.
While these variants are attested as early as 1131,25 one cannot
tell whether they originated with Zigabenus himself. In any case, a
future editor of the Dogmatic Panoply will need to consider two distinct
branches of its manuscript tradition.
