Addenda : Kusabu, Comnenian Orthodoxy, cit. n. 2, p. 19-21.
(16) We know this Vatopedi ms. primarily from a microfilm kept at the Sec-
tion grecque of the Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (Paris). Profes-
sor Erich Lamberz has kindly allowed us to see colour photographs of f. 2v-3r,
148v-149r, and 443v-444r. – On George Pamphilus : G. Parpulov, Six Scribes of
the Early Comnenian Period, in Estudios bizantinos, 5, 2017, p. 91-107, at p. 94-97.
(17) A Slavonic rendering of their text is found on f. 117r-v of București, Biblioteca
Academiei Române, Slav. 296, which contains a translation of the Panoply : M. Tsi-
branska-Kostova , Бележки върху славянския превод на Паноплия Догматика
в BAR Ms. Slav. 296 и неговия преводач, in Palaeobulgarica, 41.4, 2017, p. 3-26, at
p. 15-16. The scribe of the Bucharest ms. must have consulted precisely the pres-
ent Batop. 162. Indeed, a marginal note that he wrote on f. 193v refers to a Greek
exemplar from the Vatopedi Monastery : ibid., p. 13.
(18) In this and the following transcriptions, we have resolved the scribal
abbreviations without parentheses and introduced modern punctuation.

(19) Erich Lamberz has discovered that Batop. 162 originally formed a two-
volume set with Moskva, State Historical Museum (ГИМ), Syn. gr. 387. The latter is
also signed by the scribe George Pamphilus, contains the first half of the Dogmatic
Panoply, and was brought to Russia by the monk Arsenius Sukhanov who visited
Vatopedi in 1654 : B. L. Fonkich et al., Mount Athos Treasures in Russia, Tenth to
Seventeenth Centuries, From the Museums, Libraries and Archives of Moscow and the Moscow
Region, Moscow, 2004, p. 146 (I. A. Oretskaya).

σαρκώδη θάνατον ὑπομεῖναι (CPG 3144) 23 and lacks several excerpts
from other church fathers which are found in Zigabenus’ authorised
text24.
While these variants are attested as early as 1131,25 one cannot
tell whether they originated with Zigabenus himself. In any case, a
future editor of the Dogmatic Panoply will need to consider two distinct
branches of its manuscript tradition.
