<1. OVERVIEW> 1-1

1. OVERVIEW
This product measures the concentration of NO, SO2, CO2, CO and CH4 contained in sampling
gas on the principle that different atomic molecules have an absorption spectrum in the wave
band of infrared rays, and the intensity of absorption is determined by the Lambert-Beer law.
Since this instrument incorporates a compact O2 sensor, it allows measuring up to 4 components
simultaneously by using the built-in O2 sensor (up to 3 components if O2 measurement is
excluded).
Furthermore, use of a microprocessor and large sized liquid crystal display realizes improvement
of operability, accuracy and multi- functions.
This product is being purposely designed to be a part of large-scale fixed installations (LSFI.)
Intended uses of the product being part of LSFI are
• Combustion gas measuring / control of industrial furnaces / incinerators.
• Steel gas analysis (blast furnace, converter, thermal treatment furnace, sintering ((pellet
equipment)), coke furnace)
• Chemical analysis (petroleum refinery plant, petrochemical plant, gas generation plant)
• Environmental management and others

*1: Make the electric dehumidifier remove the moisture so that the temperature of sample gas goes below 5°C.
The water concentration should be equalized in reference gas and sample gas.
*2: Use No2/NO converter to measure NOx.
*3: The concentration of measuring component in a reference gas determines whether a reference gas purifier
is required or not.
If the concentration level is lower than 0.1 % FS, a reference gas purifier is not required. If atmospheric air
is used as reference gas and the measuring range is lower level than the description below, the use of a
reference gas purifier is recommended. However, for measuring CO2, atmospheric air should not be used
as reference gas. NO analyzer : 0-100 ppm or less, SO2 analyzer : 0-50 ppm or less, CO analyzer : 0-1000 ppm
or less. Consult us on reference gas purifier suited to each component. F03-1.ai

n Standard Functions
Output signal hold:
Output signals is held during manual and auto calibrations by activation of holding
(turning on its setting). Indication of instantaneous values are not held. The values to be
held are the last ones indicated just before calibration mode starts or selected setting
value. Indicated values are not held.
Remote output hold: (not standard function in IR202-B)
Output signal is held at any preset value or at the last value just before contact input
signal is received while voltage is input to the terminals.
Holding is maintained while the voltage is input to the terminals. Indication of
instantaneous values are not held.
Range changeover:
Set a changeover among Auto, Manual, Remote. Only selected mode is effective during
the operation.

Manual ; Key operation switches ranges
Auto ; When a measured value level is higher than 90 % of full scale
concentration for the first range, the range switches from the first
range to the second one.
When a measured value level is lower than 80 % of full scale
concentration for the first range, the range switches from the
second range to the first one.
Remote ; (not standard function in IR202-B)
When the contact input is active, a remote range switch is
available. Remote range switch is active only when the first
range applies, and when it is not, the second range applies
Range identification signal: (not standard function in IR202-B)
The current measuring range is identified by a contact position.

IR202-A, hen the first range is selected, the contact output terminals are
W
closed, and when the second range is selected, they are open
for each component.
IR202-C, IR202-D, hen the first range is selected, the NO side is closed, and
W
when the second range is selected, NC side is closed for each
component.
Auto calibration: (not standard function in IR202-B)
Auto calibration is carried out periodically at the preset cycle.
When a standard gas cylinder for calibration and a solenoid valve for opening/ closing the
gas flow line are prepared externally by the customer, calibration will be carried out with
the solenoid valve drive contacts for zero calibration and each span calibration turned on/
off sequentially at the set auto calibration timing.
Auto calibration cycle setting;
Auto calibration cycle is set.
Setting is variable within 1 to 99 hours (in increments of 1 hour) or 1 to 40 days (in
increments of 1 day).
Gas flow time setting;
The time for flowing each calibration gas in auto calibration is set.
Settable within 60 to 599 seconds (in increments of 1 second)
Auto calibration remote start: (not standard function in IR202-B)
Auto calibration is carried out only once according to an external input signal. Calibration
sequence is settable in the same way as the cyclic auto calibration.
Calibration starts by opening the auto calibration remote start input terminals after short-
circuiting for 1.5 seconds or longer. Auto calibration is started when the contacts open.
Auto zero calibration: (not standard function in IR202-B)
Auto zero calibration is carried out periodically at the preset cycle.
This cycle is independent of “Auto calibration” cycle.
When zero calibration gas and solenoid valve for opening/closing the calibration gas
flow line are prepared externally by the customer, zero calibration will be carried out with
the solenoid valve drive contact for zero calibration turned on/off at the set auto zero
calibration timing.
Auto zero calibration cycle setting;
Auto zero calibration cycle is set.
Setting is variable within 1 to 99 hours (in increments of 1 hour) or 1 to 40 days (in
increments of 1 day).

O2 correction (when /K is selected):
Conversion of measured CO, SO2 and NO gas concentrations into values at reference
O2 concentration.
21 – On
Correction formula: C = x Cs
21 – Os

Where:
C: ample gas concentration after O2 correction
Cs: Measured concentration of sample gas
Os: Measured O2 concentration (limit set 1 to 20 % O2, initial value : 20 % )
On: R
eference O2 concentration (value changeable by setting 0 to 19 %
O2, initial value : 12 % )
The upper limit value of the fractional part in this calculation is 4.
The result of calculation is indicated and output in an analog output signal.
Average value after O2 correction (when /K is selected):
The result of O2 correction or instantaneous O2 value can be output as an average value
in the determined period of time.
Moving average method is used. Sampling is carried out at intervals of 30 seconds.
(Output is updated every 30 seconds. It is updated to the averaged value of the most
recent elapsed averaging time period
Averaging time is settable within 1 to 59 minutes (in increments of 1 minute) or 1 to 4
hours (in increments of 1 hour).
Average value reset (when IR202-C specifies /K or IR202-D specifies /K):
The above-mentioned output of average value is started from the initial state by opening
the average value resetting input terminals after short-circuiting for 1.5 seconds or longer.
Output is reset by short-circuiting and restarted by opening.

<3. INSTALLATION> 3-2
To install the analyzer for optimum performance, select a location that meets the following
conditions;
• IR202 is system built-in type, embedded in a steel rack, or enclosure of steel sheet.
Keep a minimum clearance of 10 cm above the analyzer for heat dissipation. The same
size of clearance is required for each analyzer when you install several units on a multistage
rack.
• Circuit breaker rating should meet the analyzer rating, that meets IEC60947-1 and
IEC60947-3.
• Circuit breaker should be installed near the analyzer where an operator can access it.
• A label that clearly identifies the breaker should be placed on it.

3.2 How to install

The next table shows the type of mounting and its code of equipment. Rack-mounting type of
equipment can be installed with sliding rails.
Mounting type (Code) IR202-A IR202-B IR202-C IR202-D
Rack-mounting with 
sliding rails (-A)
Panel-mounting (-B) 
Wall-mounting (-C) 
Rack-mounting (-D)  

See “2.5 NO2 / NO Converter” on page 2-14.

Follow the next instruction and install equipment properly.
• Front side of equipment must stand vertically.
• The analyzer weight must be supported at the bottom of the casing.(except IR202-B)
• Protect the analyzer from vibrating. For example, install rubber material around the case to
minimize the vibration.

3.3 Piping

WARNING
In piping, the following precautions should be observed.
Wrong piping may cause gas leakage.
If the leaking gas contains a toxic component, there is a risk of serious accident being induced.
Also, if combustible gas is contained, there is a danger of explosion, fire or the like occurring.
• Connect pipes correctly referring to the instruction manual.
• Exhaust should be led outdoors so that it will not remain in the locker and installation room.
• Exhaust from the analyzer should be relieved in the atmospheric air in order that an unnecessary
pressure will not be applied to the analyzer. Otherwise, any pipe in the analyzer may be
disconnected to cause gas leakage.
• For piping, use a pipe and a pressure reducing valve to which oil and grease are not adhering. If
such a material is adhering, a fire or the like accident may be caused.

IM 11G02Q02-01EN 6th Edition : Apr. 26, 2019-00

<3. INSTALLATION> 3-3

CAUTION
Piping connection must be secured. Gas inlets have several types: reference gas inlet, outlet or
purge gas inlet. When the connection is insecure or wrong, combustible, toxic, explosive gas may
be accumulated inside the analyzer or system.

Observe the following when connecting the gas pipes.

• The pipes should be connected to the gas inlet and outlet on the analyzer, respectively.
• Connect the sampling system to the instrument by using corrosion-resistant tube. The
material should be such as Fluoropolymer (PTFE), stainless steel, or polyethylene. In case
where there is no danger of corrosion, don’t use rubber or soft vinyl tube. Analyzer indication
may become inaccurate due to the adsorption of gases.
• Piping connections are Rc1/4 (1/4 NPT) female-threaded. Cut the pipe as short as possible
for obtaining quick response. Pipe of approx. ∅4 mm (inside diameter) is recommended.
• Entry of dust in the instrument may cause operation fault. Use clean pipes and couplings.

Sampling gas inlet (Rc1/4 or 1/4NPT)
Sampling gas outlet(Rc1/4 or 1/4NPT)

Sampling gas inlet: Connect the pipe so that zero/span calibration standard gas or measured
gas pretreated with dehumidification is supplied properly.
The gas flow rate should be kept constant within the range of
1.0 ± 0.5 L/min. for IR202-A, 0.5 ± 0.2 L/min. for IR202-B,IR202-D, and
1.0 ± 0.2 L/min. for IR202-C.
Sampling gas (reference gas ) outlet: Measured gas is exhausted after measurement.
Connect the pipe so that the gas may escape through
the gas outlet into the atmosphere.
Purge gas inlet: It is used for purging the inside of the total gas analyzer. When the
analyzer must be purged, refer to Item 3.4, Purging inside Analyzer.
Use dry gas N2 or instrumentation air for purge gas. (flow rate of 1 L/min
or more should be used and no dust or mist is contained).

IM 11G02Q02-01EN 6th Edition : Apr. 26, 2019-00

<3. INSTALLATION> 3-4
Reference gas inlet: For IR202-C, introduce reference gas for the sample switching. Connect
the pipe so that atmosphere pretreated with dehumidification, dry air, dry
N2 is supplied properly. The gas flow rate should be kept constant within
the range of 1.0 ± 0.2 L/min.

3.4 Sampling
See “1.2 Sampling system configuration” on page 1-3

l Standard requirements of sampling gas

Flow rate:
IR202-A ; 1.0 ± 0.5 L/min
IR202-B, IR202-D ;0.5 ± 0.2 L/min
IR202-C; 1.0 ± 0.2 L/min
Temperature: 0 to 50°C
Pressure: less than 10 kPa (atmosphere open at gas outlet)
Dust : article size should be smaller than 0.3µm and the mass concentration
P
should be less than 100µg / Nm3.
Mist : Not allowed
Moisture lower than 2°C saturation
Corrosive element : less than 1 ppm
Use sampling gas with care as below;

• The dust contained in sample gas should be eliminated completely with filters. The filter at
the final stage should be capable of eliminating dust of 0.3 microns.
• The dew point of sample gas must be lower than the ambient temperature for preventing
formation of drain in the analyzer. If water vapor is contained in sample gas, its dew point
should be reduced down to about 0°C through a dehumidifier.
• If SO3 mist is contained in sample gas, the mist should be eliminated with a mist filter,
cooler, etc. Eliminate other mist in the same way.
• If a large amount of highly corrosive gas such as Cl2, F2 or HCl is contained in sample gas,
the service life of analyzer will be shortened. So, avoid such gases.
• Sample gas temperature is allowed within a range from 0 to 50°C. Pay attention not to flow
hot gas directly into the analyzer.
• Flow rate must not be changed during a measurement.
• Install a flowmeter as shown in a configuration (1.2), and check the flow rate.

l Standard gas for calibration

Prepare the standard gas for zero / span calibration. Periodical calibration are necessary. (weekly
is recommended)

Measuring components excluding O2

Zero gas: N2 gas
Span gas: Gas with concentration of 90% level or higher in the range of each
corresponding component (recommended) (the rest of it is N2)
Measuring O2 (Built-in paramagnetic O2 analyzer)

IM 11G02Q02-01EN 6th Edition : Apr. 26, 2019-00

<3. INSTALLATION> 3-5
Zero gas: N2 gas
Span gas: Gas with concentration of 90% level or higher in the range of each
corresponding component
(the rest of it is N2 gas or atmosphere (21% O2 ))
Measuring O2 (External Zirconia O2 analyzer)
Zero gas Dry air, or atmospheric air, but atmospheric air should not be
contained in zero gas if CO2 meter is provided.
Span gas 1 to 2% gas (the rest of it is N2)
It is understood to influence the calibration model of the infrared gas analyzer when a lot of H2,
He, and Ar are included in the measurement gas (pressure broadening).
The span gas must use a gas near the composition of the measurement gas when you measure
the gas like the above-mentioned.

l Purging of instrument inside

The inside of instrument need not be purged generally except for the following cases.
• A combustible gas component is contained in sample gas.
• Corrosive gas is contained in the atmospheric air at the installation site.
• The same gas as the sample gas component is contained in the atmospheric air at the
installation site.
In such cases as above, the inside of analyzer should be purged with the air for instrumentation
or N2. Purging flow rate should be about 1 L/min.
If dust or mist is contained in purging gas, it should be eliminated completely in advance.

l Pressure at sampling gas outlet

Pressure at the sampling gas outlet should be adjusted to atmospheric pressure.

3.5 Wiring

CAUTION
• Wiring work must be performed with the main power set to OFF to prevent electric shocks.
• Enforce construction of class-D grounding wire by all means, 100 Ω or less.
If the specified grounding construction is neglected, a shock hazard or fault may be caused.
• Wires should be the proper one meeting the ratings of this instrument. If using a wire which
cannot endure the ratings, a fire may occur.
• Be sure to use a power supply of correct rating. Connection of power supply of incorrect rating
may cause fire.

Connector for analog output (A/O)

Output signal : 4 20 m A DC or 0 to 1 V DC (select on order)
Minus lines for the insulation and signal are common from the
ground and internal circuit.
Allowable load: 4 to 20 mA DC, 100 kΩ or more

NOTE
The analog output signals of the instrument are not isolated individually. It is recommended to
isolate the signals individually to eliminate the interference from the unnecessary signals or the
effect of external interference, especially it the cable exceeds 30 meters or leads to outdoors.

Connector for external input (A/I)

Input signal:
External zirconia O2 Sensor (ZX8D) : Zirconia O2 sensor signal
External O2 analyzer : 0 to 1 V DC (DC input resistor of 1MΩ or more)
• It is used when the cord 1 (external zirconia O2 Sensor(ZX8D)) or cord 2 (an external O2
analyzer) is specified as ordered. DO NOT connect when cord 3 (Built in paramagnetic O2
analyzer) is installed.
• Connect the dedicated connector (accessory) to the output of the external Zirconia analyzer or
the external O2 analyzer (received separately).
• In case of an external O2 analyzer, input a signal of 0 to 1 V DC with respect to O2 full scale of
the analyzer. The O2 concentration display, output, and O2 correction can be performed.

(4) Unit Displays unit , ppm or vol %
(5) Average time Displays average time.

l Instantaneous concentration value:

As a sample screen picture shows above, gas component such as NOx on Ch1(shown above),
SO2 on Ch2 (shown above) indicate what gas component is currently being measured and each
corresponding instantaneous concentration value.

l O2 correction concentration values:

Channels (Ch) with “cv” indicate O2 correction concentration value of each designated gas
component. The O2 correction concentration value is calculated from the following equation,
based on which sampling component is measured, what is the O2 instantaneous concentration
value, and O2 correction reference value. See 5. Other Parameters in 5.7.3 Maintenance Mode ,
21 - On On: The value of the O2 correction reference value
x Cs
Correction output=
21 - Os (Value set by application)
Os: Oxygen concentration (%)
Cs: Concentration of relevant measured component
Os is not more than O2 concentration limit in value.
The correction components are NO, CO and SO2 only.

l O2 correction concentration average value:

AV AV
In the Ch (component) and O2 average value where “ CV ” is displayed as “ CV CO” in the
component display, a value obtained by averaging O2 corrected concentration value or O2
average value in a fixed time is output every 30 seconds.
Averaging time can be changed between 1 to 59 minutes or 1 to 4 hours according to the
average time settings .

5.6 Peak Alarm Setting

Peak alarm appears only when option code (/A) is specified.
During a measurement when the peak count exceeds the setting value to indicate the CO
concentration is over the upper limit, the peak alarm is output. This section describes how to
perform various settings of peak alarm.

NOTE
The peak count is not implemented during the first 10 minutes after the power is turned on.

Peak Alarm : Setting of peak alarm is performed with ON/OFF

Alarm Value : If a peak concentration exceeds the set alarm value one time, the peak counter
increments by 1.
settable value 0 to 1000 ppm  5 ppm step (initial value: 500
ppm)
Alarm Count : When a peak in excess of the setting time occurs, a peak count alarm is output.
settable 1 to 99 counts (initial value: 5 counts)
Hysteresis : To prevent possible chattering when the peak value may exceed the set peak
concentration by only 1 time, the peak count has an allowance in the hysteresis
width. 0 to 20% of full scale (initial value: 0% of full scale)
[% full scale] represents the percentage with the CO range regarded as 100%.

Peak count alarm

F6_6graph.ai

If CO concentration exceeds the alarm value, counting will begin. If the number of peaks is over
the set times per hour, a peak alarm contact output becomes closed (ON). If it is less than the set
times per hour, it is open (OFF). Since 5 times of peaks /hour is marked at (1) section from
the above graph, the peak count alarm is turned ON. Since peaks of more than 5 times per 1
hour occur at the interval between (1) and (2) , the peak count alarm remains ON. Since at
(2), peaks are reduced to 4 times per hour, it is turned OFF.
Like the hysteresis of the alarm setting , the hysteresis prevents possible chattering when
measured gas is fluctuated near the alarm value.

l Releasing peak count alarm

To release the peak count alarm, set the peak alarm to OFF.
Turning on the peak alarm initiates counting from 0.

5.7.1 Output Hold

By setting an output hold to ON, an output signal of each channel are held during the calibration
(manual calibration and auto calibration) and for the gas flow time (refer to Item 5.4, Setting
of Auto Calibration). Regardless of Hold ON/OFF setting, an output signal can be held via an
external input.
You can select the value for hold from the value immediately before entering output hold,
“current”, and arbitrary value, “setting.”.
If you cancel calibration after the calibration gas starts being supplied regardless automatically or
manually, the holding extension time will be performed.
Instantaneous measurement value cannot be held. Output only can be held.
If set value is selected for hold, instantaneous O2 correction value is calculated and held based
on the set value.
Range identification contact output cannot be switched even if the range is switched during the
hold.
l Screen display during Holding
The “Hold ON” message blinks on the measuring screen. Since the screen displays the process
of calibration during the manual calibration, “Hold ON” is not displayed even if the output signal is
held, but the screen is displayed with the hold extending time.

6.2 Span Calibration

Span Calibration is used to perform a span point adjustment. Supply calibration gas with
concentration set to the span value to perform the span calibration. For the span calibration gas
for the NOx, SO2, CO2, CO, CH4measurement, use the standard gas with a concentration of 90
to 100% of its measuring range value. For the span calibration gas for the O2 measurement, use
the standard gas with a concentration of 90 to 100% of its measuring range value when
measuring with the built-in O2 sensor, and use the standard gas of 1 to 2 vol% when measuring
with an external zirconia O2 sensor.

<7. MAINTENANCE> 7-3

7.3 Cleaning of sampling cell

Entry of dust or water drops in the sampling cell contaminates the interior of the cell, thus
resulting in a drift. Clean the inside if dirty. Then, check the sampling device, especially the filter,
to prevent the cell from being contaminated by dust or mist.

CAUTION
Service personnel from YOKOGAWA will take care of the maintenance. Contact YOKOGAWA
representatives for maintenance service.

7.3.1 Disassembly and assembly of sampling cell (Pipe cell, Block cell)
There are two kinds of sampling cells, block cells (cell length: 4 mm, 8 mm, 16 mm, 32 mm) and
pipe cells (Cell length: 64 mm, 125 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm).
2-component analyzer may incorporate both sampling cells in one unit. In such a case, detach
the pipe cell and then block cell

CAUTION
Special care should be taken when assembling or disassembling the measuring cell to avoid
the application of force to the detector pipe or light source unit pipe. If the pipe is deformed or
damaged by excessive force, there is a danger of gas leak, thus resulting in faulty operation.

l How to remove pipe cell

(1) Stop measured gas. If it is harmful, purge the pipe cell thoroughly with zero gas.
(2) Turn OFF the power switch.
(3) Remove the screws then remove the cover.(Open the front door on IR202-B).
(4) Remove the tubes connected to the pipe cell.
(5) See Figure. 7.1. Loosen and remove screws (Screw A) from the cell retainer fastening the
pipe cell (both ends).
(6) Remove the cell from the measuring unit and unscrew the infrared transmission window at
both ends in the right direction.Don’t miss the O-ring.
(7) For assembly, reverse the disassembly procedure.Make sure to put the space in 0.5mm
between light source unit and the pipe cell, the pipecell and the detector. Screw the pipe part
of gas inlet with window on the both side to the measuring cell. Screw it so that tubing (both
end of pipe cell) and the pipe cell align facing up. (Marking of pipe cell faces up.)

7.3.2 How to clean sampling cell

CAUTION
Handle the fragile window with care. Use care not to rub off the dirt from the window roughly.

• To clean the sampling cell inside or infrared ray transmission window, first clear large dirt of
it with a soft brush and then wipe lightly with soft cloth. Do not use abrasive or paper cloth.
• If the window or the sampling cell interior is very dirty, use a soft lint-free cloth moistened
with absolute alcohol.
• If the window is corroded, rub off the scale from the window lightly with a soft cloth to which
chrome oxide powder is applied. If it is excessively corroded, it should be replaced with new
one.
• When the sampling cell or window cleaning is completed, assemble according to the
sampling cell disassembly and assembly procedures. Assemble the pipe carefully. If it
becomes bent or damaged, replace it with a new part.
• Do not wash the sample cell components with water.
