Sustainable cities and communities

Goal eleven focuses on sustainable cities and communities globally as well as locally.

This specific goal looks at the growth of the population and what needs to be done to sustain it

and help it develop. As of now, “ 3.5 billion- lives in cities today and 5 billion people are

projected to live in cities by 2030,” (UN 11). The population is growing which means more

suitable housing and transportation is needed, and part of this goal is that by 2030 cities and

communities will, “enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory,

integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries,”

(UN11). Basically this example is showing how human settlement is at a high in not just the

United States but other countries as well, and this is a problem that needs to be addressed and

solved.

Part of this goal is to , “ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and

basic services and upgrade slums” ( UN 11 ), and by ensuring all of this by 2030 many more

people will gain a possibly a better transportation option and better housing. Some people may

start out with a good house but no way to get to work and this will effect them overtime until

they lose their house after not being able to attend work. By finding alternatives to owning a car,

which has many expenses, people are able to keep transportation costs low and still make income

by attending their jobs. The idea of everyone owning their own cars is unreachable but the idea

of having good buses, possibly environmentally safe ones, is much more obtainable. On another

note, “as more and more people move to urban areas, cities typically expand their geographical

boundaries,” ( UN 11 ) and as the urban land grows it gives more space for upcoming housing.

The only issue with this is that as cities and towns grow more and more certain raw materials are

being overused which can lead to much worse problems. More housing should continue to be

built, but it should be built with the future in mind.

The UN chose this as a goal for 2030 because it can be reached even with certain

constraints. Some problems such as money shortage, unhealthy conditions, or not enough

material can affect whether or not this goal is reached on time and efficiently. To reach the goal

of sustainable communities time management is very important because my working diligently

and with a plan any goal becomes much more in reach. If people don’t have safe and affordable

housing and transportation options then their quality of life would suffer because, “the persistent

impact of poor housing and homelessness of health,” ( The three housing problems that most

affect your health) is very visible. By not being able to afford or live in safe and healthy living

environments people can suffer greatly. All around the world people have issues with things like

housing and transportation because it’s a worldy problem.
