Chapter 1 of the book was useful for me when using the behavioral level of analysis

when dealing with Armando. The behavioral level of analysis calls for “movements that are
readily observable by the naked eye are measured or evaluated.” This was especially true when
first observing Armando and getting to understand where he currently is and judging how long
the treatment might take and the probable cause of what he is going to need in terms of recovery.
Also, using subjective description for analyzing Armando was needed to help with the
understanding of his injuries and understanding how Armando got into the situation that he is in.
Chapter 3 was helpful in assessing and assigning the injuries to a specific location for the
case. In making an impactful case, I made a client whose injuries would make a meaningful
impact, hence why I made the client an eighteen year old high school student. The injuries to his
tibia and fibula made Armando wheelchair bound and would need extensive rehabilitation
because the bones that are broken are load bearing bones. Also, using some of the words that
I’ve learned such as contusion and the anatomical direction helped with getting a visual of where
exactly is the location. One of the points I made for the femur injury was there was a small
fracture running on the distal part of the femur bone. It makes so that injury is still present but is
not a substantial injury compared to the tibia and fibula just absolutely breaking from the
accident that Armando was faced with.
Chapter 4 was helpful in regards to his health background. Since the client is an eighteen
year old track star, things such as his metabolic rate would be high and has very good energy
control and distribution. Understanding this would help with underlying things such as health
complications to get him back on his feet. If Armando would be an overweight teenager who was
400 lbs+ and had broken his legs, the same approach to getting him back on his feet would not be
present at all. Muscular fatigue would be far more present and having to develop a muscle on top
of trying to rehabilitate the body would be a larger issue. Also, the training after the fact of doing
resistance workouts, squats, lunges, and the other calisthenics could not be an option for
Armando if we were not in the condition he was in. In a way, making him extremely healthy
before getting into an accident was to help with a much faster recovery as well. Since Armando
could metabolize at a much faster rate than if he were overweight, his ATP production helps
inadvertently with his recovery since he has such high potential energy waiting and with a
healthy heart and blood flow, the amount of nutrients that his body can distribute throughout the
whole body at a very rapid pace would actually increase his recovery process.
Chapter 5 is very important for the recovery process since I used different forms of
biomechanics on an elementary scale to help get Armando back on his feet in the safest way
possible. First, I used angular motion when approaching his injury initially when stretching out
his feet in different directions to administer flexion and extension that will pull from his shins
and calves so the muscle around the injury would come out of being dormant and not moving
since the accident. Rather than using just a linear motion, using an angular motion is a lot more
helpful since it stimulates the muscles in different ways so every part of the muscles around the
injury are prompted to work rather than just a section if I were to move his foot just up and
down. Secondly, and this too went without much explanation, I used Archimedes’ Principle,
which states “If the weight of an object is less than that of the displaced fluid, the object rises”
and this leads to the buoyancy aspect I was getting at with the pool training. Since Armando
would be submerged in water, even partially, he would be a lot lighter because humans are
buoyant due to having a large chest cavity carrying oxygen, so the weight would be displaced,
causing the floaty feeling of being in water. Since Armando would weigh less being underwater,
he can administer more force onto his injuries and start trying to work the muscles around the
injury so it can slowly start trying to take the full load of Armando again, and then some.
Chapter 6 was useful for the feedback when dealing with Armando. Informing Armando
with the knowledge of performance and giving him this feedback will help him willingly along
his recovery process. Progressing Armando from pool walking and exercises such as lunges in
the pool and then lunges on the land shortly after grants Armando the knowledge of
performance. A healthy outlook on recovery does help speed up recovery because of the
hormones the body puts out. “Endorphins act as analgesics, which means they diminish the
perception of pain. They also act as sedatives.” With a higher pain tolerance in essence,
Armando’s progress will speed up because he will think less about the pain and increasing the
performance on the injury and strengthening the muscles will help with the recovery.
Chapter 7 I used in a generalistic aspect of wanting to cross-work with a therapist or a
psychologist for Armando because of the trauma that came with the accident. Mentally,
Armando was beaten up not only because he got hit with a car, but because he was wheelchair
bound as a track star and could not be scouted by college coaches to try and get into a school
with the thoughts of an athletic scholarship to run professionally. His goal settings were
diminished since he had an ultimate goal in mind but that was shattered by the accident, so
working with a therapist to help him attain a similar goal or reassuring him that it is still possible
to achieve his old goals is necessary so Armando is willing to proceed with physical therapy. If
Armando were not compliant, the recovery process would take longer or maybe he might just not
want to do it since his goals, as he sees it, is long gone.
Chapter 8 was helpful because Armando is still in a developing age. He is eighteen years
old, so he is still growing and his body is not at a point where it is declining. He is still
continuing to grow and will for the next couple of years. His body still has not declined at all,
and since it is still growing, he can recover a lot quicker and get back on his feet relatively quick
compared to if he were middle-aged or even elderly.
Chapter 9 is useful because of the social background. I made him Mexican because at
least from what I understand, Mexican culture is very family oriented, and making his family
apart of his recovery journey is also very key to a fast recovery. Them helping him get back on
his feet and helping him with the homework I’ve assigned so he’s doing mild exercise at home
will help speed up the recovery process since I only see him twice a week. Them being this
foundational support to him and are very much apart of this recovery process is key, because a
strong and healthy family to back you up will make a difference compared to if Armando we’re
going through this process alone or if he did not have a stable family to back him up at all.
