Pentecost Sunday
On the weekend of June 22-23, we welcome Fr. David Convertino, OFM, here at the Shrine. Many of you remember
Fr. David as the very popular Pastor and Guardian of the Shrine from 2002 to 2011. He is visiting from New York and
is here to raise money for Holy Name Province. Most of the friars here at Arch St. belong to Holy Name Province, and
our Provincialate, or headquarters, is on 31st Street in Manhattan. The Province extends from Boston down to St.
Petersburg, Florida, and includes sponsorship of significant ministries in places such as St. Bonaventure University and
Siena College.
Fr. David will be here to raise money for three purposes: 1. The education and training of the friars who are entering the
religious life as Franciscans. 2. The care of retired and infirmed friars. Many of the retired friars have served
remarkable terms of service; many of them dutifully served for a long time here at the Shrine. 3. The Benevolence Trust
of the friars. This Trust encourages and supports programs and projects that offer concrete services for meeting the
needs of the poor. These programs include efforts to secure basic rights, food, shelter, medical care, and education for
the poor. At the Shrine we are able to fund our own ministries of this nature, but many parts of the country are not as
fortunate. This Benevolence Trust funds worthy programs in those places. Welcome, Fr. David!
Thank you to Fr. Joe Quinn for his work with the Shrine’s LGBTQ ministry. We all appreciate his tireless work with
this important part of Shrine community.
Thank you to The Very Reverend James A. Flavin, Episcopal Vicar for the Central Region of the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Boston, who has requested and received permission for a sabbatical beginning July 1, 2019. Fr. Jim has
been an extraordinary supporter of the friars and our work here on Arch St. We wish him a restful, well-deserved
sabbatical!
This new order founded by Saint Francis was prompted by a need to reinvigorate the life of the Catholic Church. At the present
time the Franciscan Friars number 17,224 worldwide with 586 novices or “Friars in training”.
Often times you will see OFM after a Friar’s name, wondering what it means. It refers to the Order of Friars Minor commonly
called the Franciscans.
