COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

PROPOSAL BY STUDENTS OF BS(C) HONS ARCHITECTURE,


TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY
Introduction
As an architecture students from Taylor’s University, Community Service Initiative (CSI) was one
of our compulsory subjects to be taken for this semester. The main objective of this module was
to promote a sense of care and social responsibility in each students.
In a group of 11, we were asked to collaborate with one of the chosen beneficiaries / orphanages
and conduct an interactive and meaningful event that will make an impact in the children’s life.

Age Group: 8~16
Objectives
1. To introduce to the children regarding architecture
2. To introduce the children about history
3. To allow the children to expand the creativity and promote teamwork.
Event Description
Theme: Time traveling
Execution week: 18th - 26th May (Preferably weekends)
Activities:
1. Build old historical buildings out of laser cut model boards - older kids
2. Coloring competition - for the younger kids
3. Making costumes out of newspaper.
4. Egg Fall
5. Name throwing
Draft Itinerary
9am -Preparation

10am -Ice Breaking

Egg Fall
A fun interactive game that children are given with materials
to create a protection for the egg, so the egg would not break
when they are dropped from high ground.Children are able to
gain basic knowledge of forces, load transfer and the
structure

Process:

1. Each group (2~3) will be given with materials and an egg. They
will be given 15 minutes to create a shell for the egg fall
2. Children will take their egg shells to the 2nd floor and drop them
3. If the egg is successfully secured by their structure, they get to
win a prize

Materials : Newspaper, Straws, Tape, Eggs


Marshmallow Stick Tower

An interactive game where children in a group brainstorms of


a way to build a tower with a marshmallow acting as the only
joinery and support for the tower. Through this game, the
children will have a fundamental idea of the importance of
supports and joineries.

Process:

1. Kids would be separated into group with 2-3 person in one group
2. They would be given a bag of marshmallow and satay sticks to
build a tower.
3. The time limit of 10 minutes for each group.

Materials : Marshmallow, Satay stick


Colouring
This session will act as a warm up session after lunch.
Children will be given individually A4 size template with
buildings for coloring.

Process:

1. The children will be given a set of color pencil for this


activity.
2. Each of them will be given a different building template, so
that at the same time when they are coloring, we will share
some information and history of the building itself.

Materials: A4 size template, color pencil


Models through time
In this activity, the children will be given already cut pieces of modelling
material and from that they are to assemble the model based on a photo
of the actual building.This activity allows the children to see how the
buildings in the past are and see the progression of history

Process:

- The children will be split into groups of 3


- The buildings will be representing building/architecture of different eras of
time
- The children are able to keep the model after they are done
- They will have 1 to 2 hours to complete the model

Materials: modelling materials ( laser cut ), glue


Costume Designing
This activity allows the children to tap into their creative abilities,
promote teamwork and create awareness about recycling.

Process:

1. The children will be split into groups of 3, carried on from activity before
2. The children will be provided with recycled newspaper and masking
tape to create a newspaper costume for a representative of the group.
3. They will be given half an hour to complete the task
4. Winning criteria being the most creative and innovative costume.

Materials: Newspaper, tape, scissors.


Wrap up session
At the end of the event, each winning team for each
program (egg fall, coloring, model, costume designing)
will be given a reward, and also a token of participation
will be given to every child that has participated.

GIfts include : laser cut medal, stationery, books, etc.
