Trinity Sunday

Happy Father’s Day!

Often Church celebrations recognize particular historical events. Today’s celebration is different in that it
commemorates a particular doctrine in the Catholic Church, that of the three Persons of God: the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today is a good today for us all to reflect on our own relationships, with God and
with other people.

On the weekend of June 22-23, we welcome Fr. David Convertino, OFM, here at the Shrine. Many of you
remember Fr. David as the very popular Pastor and Guardian of the Shrine from 2002 to 2011. He is visiting
from New York and is here to raise money for Holy Name Province. Most of the friars here at Arch St.
belong to Holy Name Province, and our Provincialate, or headquarters, is on 31st Street in Manhattan. The
Province extends from Boston down to our parish in Orlando Florida, and includes sponsorship of significant
ministries in places such as St. Bonaventure University and Siena College. Fr. David will be here to raise
money for three purposes: 1. The education and training of the friars who are entering the religious life as
Franciscans. 2. The care of retired and infirmed friars. Many of the retired friars have served remarkable terms
of service. 3. The Benevolence Trust of the friars. This Trust encourages and supports programs and projects
that offer concrete services for meeting the needs of the poor. These programs include efforts to secure basic
rights, food, shelter, medical care, and education for the poor. At the Shrine we are able to fund our own
ministries of this nature, but many parts of the country are not as fortunate. This Benevolence Trust funds
worthy programs in those places. Welcome, Fr. David!

THE FRANCISCAN CHALLENGE

Q & A’s
Who lives in Holy Name Province?
There are 325 Franciscan Friars in Holy Name Province serving the people of God in a wide variety
of settings – colleges, parishes, urban ministry centers and diverse social ministries along the East
Coast. Today we continue the mission of Saint Francis to make the Gospel message come alive in
our contemporary world. We live in cities, suburbs and rural areas. Our backgrounds are diverse
and our ministries are varied; most of us serve in pastoral roles, while others work in education,
social ministry, administration and manual trades.
What is the mission of the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province?
The core of Franciscanism is in the living out of the Gospel of Jesus Christ within the Church
according to the rule of life proposed and observed by Saint Francis of Assisi to preach this message
to every creature. This is our purpose and mission.
Our message is very simple:
God loves each of us totally and unconditionally.
What makes the Franciscan Friars different?
The Franciscan Friars have always been thought of as “of the people and with the people”. Living
in community is a core value and often helps the Friars to put things in a more “down to earth”
perspective. The Friars never see themselves as better than anyone, and therefore they are not
usually judgmental and are very accepting of everyone, those who are in the faith community and
those who are not.
All Are Welcome is the usual core of Franciscan hospitality.

titled: Holding on to Hope.
Following is the dedication of the book: This book is dedicated to my dearest friend
Br. John Maganzini, OFM. You are a mentor, a best friend, a brother, and a true
example of a Franciscan in every way. I am blessed to know you and I am a better
person because I have had you in my life. You are family. Also to Saint Anthony
Shrine in Boston and all the Franciscan friars, like Br. John and Br. Greg Day, who
