Updated: 02 Oct 2013
CAS Number: --------------
UN Number: --------------

Section 2 : Hazards Identification
TO MAN
Skin; Inhalation; Ingestion
TO ENVIRONMENT
May be dangerous if enters water intakes. Fouling of shorelines and environment. Has potential to bio
accumulate. Not readily biodegradable.
Section 3 : First Aid Measures
Eye Contact:
Wash in large amounts of water - seek medical advice
Skin Contact:
Cold product - wash in commercial hand cleaners and water. Hot product can cause severe burns; cool
with large amount of running cold water - seek medical advice. Do not remove the material from the
skin as it provides an airtight sterile cover over the burn, which will eventually fall away with the scab
as the wound heals. If the bitumen is to be removed, use a medicinally approved vegetable oil (or
medicinal paraffin). Never use petroleum products
Inhalation:
If inhalation of vapor causes irritation to the nose or throat, remove to fresh air. If symptoms persist
obtain medical advice.
Ingestion:
If contamination of the mouth occurs, wash out thoroughly with water. Except as a deliberate act, the
ingestion of large amounts of product is unlikely. If it should occur, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.
Wash out mouth with water. Where vomiting occurs naturally have victim place head below hip level
in order to reduce risk of aspiration. Seek immediate medical attention.
Section 4 : Fire-Fighting Measures
Extinguishing media:
Extinguish by using dry chemical or carbon dioxide.
Special fire-fighting procedures:
For major fires, call the Fire Brigade immediately. Ensure an escape path is always available from any
fire. There is a danger of flashback if sparks or hot surfaces ignite vapor. In case of fire, use foam, dry
chemical, carbon dioxide, vaporizing liquid or water delivered as a fine spray.
Water be used to cool down surrounding area, exposed surfaces and to protect personnel
Special protective equipment:
Breathing apparatus, body protection
Unusual fire and explosion hazards:
Avoid ignition sources. Flash Point °C: 66, Flammable limits - LEL: 0.7%, UEL: 6%.
Hazardous decomposition products:
Smoke and particulate matter (soot) on burning

Section 5 : Accidental Release Measures

Notification procedures:
Report spills as required to appropriate authorities.
Procedures if material is released or spilled:
For a small spillage disposal in compliance with the local regulations.
Environmental precautions:
May be dangerous if enters water intakes, Fouling of shorelines and environment
Has potential to bio accumulate
Not readily biodegradable
Personal precautions:
See Section 9

Section 6 : Handling and Storage

Handling:
Avoid prolonged skin contact, avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after Contact. Ensure
adequate ventilation. For health and safety reasons and to maintain quality, do not exceed the industry
recommended storage and handling temperatures.
Storage:
Store in unopened containers and keep dry. Keep the container in a cool, well ventilated place. Do not
expose to heat, flames, sources of ignition or strong oxidizing agents.

Section 8 : Stability and Reactivity

Stability (thermal, light, etc.):
Stable
Conditions to avoid:
Heated material with atmosphere or oxygen
Incompatibility (materials to avoid):
Oxidants (chlorine, oxygen, hypochlorite, etc)
Hazardous Decomposition Products:
Smoke and particulate matter (soot) on burning

Section 9 : Exposure Controls / Personal Protection

Ventilation:
Use in well-ventilated area.
Respiratory protection:
No respiratory protection is generally required under normal conditions of use. In places where
Hydrogen Sulphide may accumulate, use a self contained breathing apparatus
Eye protection:
When handling hot product material, wear a safety hat with protective visor.
Skin protection:
When handling heated product material wear heat resistant gloves. Always seek advice from
Protective glove suppliers. Wear heat resistant coveralls.

Section 10 : Toxicological Data

Acute toxicology:
Oral toxicity (rats):
LD50 expected to be above 2000 mg/kg
Dermal toxicity (rabbits):
No expected to be a skin sensitizer
Inhalation toxicity (rats):
Not considered to be a hazard
Eye irritation (rabbits):
Vapor considered slight irritant
Skin irritation (rabbits):
May cause dermatitis
Other toxicology data:
CARCINOGENICITY
No evidence exists that undiluted bitumens are carcinogenic. Bitumen diluted with solvents may be
weakly carcinogenic. Repeated a prolonged contact with cutback bitumen can increase the risk of skin
cancer
MUTAGENICITY
No data to support mutagenicity

Section 11 : Ecological Information

Environmental fate and effects:
ECOTOXICITY
Not soluble in water. Practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms
LC/EC 50> 100 mg/ℓ. May cause physical fouling of aquatic organisms
PERSISTENCE
Biodegradation
Not readily biodegradable
Bioaccumulation
Contains components which may cause bio-accumulate
Mobility
Partly evaporates, but a significant portion will remain. If it enters soil it will absorb soil particles and
will not be mobile.
Section 12 : Disposal Considerations
Waste disposal:
Dispose of via an authorized person/licensed waste disposal contractor in accordance with local
regulations. Where possible, arrange for the product to be recycled. Dispose of the product and
container carefully and responsibly. Do not dispose of near or into waterways, ditches or down drains.
