Teaching with Graphic Organizers

Summary Video #1: Theme

In this graphic organizer, I felt as the video was a great way to express how to find theme
in the story the class will be reading. My first question involved the video and information in the
video so i know as a teacher that they watched the video. With that information the students can
break down the story in which they need to understand from the curriculum. I had them state the
plot of the story so they can refresh their minds with the books information. I then went to the
main characters like it talks about in the video. It is important to understand the actions of the
characters because then you can understand reasoning and continuation of the story line aka
theme. Then I asked what they think the theme is, so they can use evidence from the story to
find it. Then I want to discuss the development of the story and the characters interactions
because knowing this information the students can master finding themes in stories. I like using
boxes because it’s easy to understand and look at as you move from question to question.

Summary Video #2: Comprehensions: Making Comparisons

In my graphic organizer, I wanted to express the importance of finding relationship of
other reading and/or personal connections with the story the class is currently reading. I wanted
to start off with the focus of the story which is the theme, so for my first box I asked about the
video and the reading together. This is important so the students can gather information about the
book and the reason for watching the video. Then in my next two boxes I wanted them to do the
same activity that was in the video with their current book. I asked the students to compare their
life and then compare the book to another book. By doing this they can fully comprehend the
meaning of the book better. I then asked about the tone or phrases(that can express tone) of the
book. By finding these things in the current reading they can understand why the book is a
certain way. The last question is an opinion question so that the class can discuss this question
and talk with one another. I chose these colors and boxes because it’s simple and it doesn't take
away from finding the information: easy to understand and quick to complete.
