Section 1
CADD Requirements
1.1 Introduction
This appendix provides Program requirements for computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) when
the Designer’s Scope of Work requires the submittal of electronic files in AutoCAD for the Clean Water
Nashville Overflow Abatement Program (Program). These requirements establish standard
methodologies and final products for the Program. The Designer and sub-consultants shall adhere to
these requirements unless the Designer specifically requests deviations in writing to the Project
Manager and obtains approval for the deviation.

When the Designer’s Scope of Work does not list AutoCAD files as a deliverable, the following
information may be utilized as a guideline for the development of plans for the Program. However, the
Designer is expected to produce plans that match the Program’s sample plans, as provided in
Appendix E of the Design Management Manual.

1.2 General CADD Guidelines

 All model space entities are to be drawn full scale unless noted otherwise.
 Dimensions should be associative and not exploded.
 All external references should be “OVERLAYED” whenever possible.
 Use polylines rather than individual lines whenever possible.
 Use provided standard drawing symbols whenever possible.
 Text and dimension styles should be used without exception.
 Use drawing templates for creating new drawings.
Note: When AutoCAD files are required as a deliverable, design drawings must be produced using the
AutoCAD Version 2007 or later software or translated when submitting the CADD file to AutoCAD.
The use of a different CADD production system is at the Designer’s risk.

1.3 File Naming Conventions

All drawing file names must be assigned in a logical and consistent manner. The Designer shall
maintain consistent individual directories for each project, a catalogue of file names, and verification
that the names used are consistent with these standards (see Section 3, Figure 3-1).

1.4 Assigning File Names

File naming procedures are based on having one drawing per file. Within AutoCAD, multiple Paper
Space layouts may be contained within a single drawing file. This technique is not a standard and
should be avoided whenever possible (see Section 4 and Figure 4-1 for more details).

XREFs should be included and noted. See Section 5 for further details regarding file name principles.
Any shape or font files (.SHP or .SHX) used to create the drawing must be transmitted to the Program

1
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

Design Management Team with the file. It is the Designer's responsibility to provide any necessary
files and copyrights.

1.5 Drawing Sheets

Section 6 provides a standard drawing border sheet and template sheets. The standard drawing sheet
shall be used as a common XREF for all project drawings. A corresponding attribute block for the title
text and revisions shall be used in conjunction with this sheet.

The standard drawing sheet with the inserted attribute block is to be overlaid in Paper Space at
insertion point 0, 0 and in layer “XREF” for all drawings as shown in Section 5, XREF Naming Principle.

The Designer shall establish a suitable and acceptable drawing sheet to comply with Program
requirements and project document control needs such as keeping the relevant parts of the standard
attribute title block to read the entries in the drawing register. This process may involve coordinating
with the Program Management Team.

The standard drawing sheet size shall be Arch D. Drawings shall be scaled, presented, read, and stored
in an Arch D size format.

1.6 Title Block

A sample title block for the Program is included in Section 6.

1.7 View Titles and Projection

All sections, views, and elevations shall be referenced by numeral characters, e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.

All details shall be referenced by alphanumeric characters, e.g., A, B, C, etc.

Either 1st or 3rd angle projections may be used as long as it is clear which way the views are taken.

All civil sections are to be viewed in the direction of increasing station (chainage) unless otherwise
noted.

1.8 Drawing Notes

General notes applicable to the entire drawing set (or group) shall be listed on the first drawing in the
set (or group). All other drawings shall refer to these general notes and only show notes applicable to
that particular drawing.

Notes on each drawing shall be placed on the drawing sheet's right-hand edge, appropriately grouped,
and numbered for reading ease.

All notes shall be in uppercase.

1.9 Scales
All CADD drawings are to be one unit equals one foot in model space but displayed at an appropriate
scale in Paper Space. Each view should have a scale indicated in the view title or section call up.

2
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

The preferred scales are:

Engineering Scale Architectural Scale

1"=10' 1"=20' 3"=1'-0" 1-1/2"=1'-0"
1"=30' 1"=40' 1"=1'-0" 1/2"=1'-0"
1"=50' 1"=60' 3/4"=1'-0" 3/8"=1'-0"
1"=100' 1"=200' 3/16"=1'-0" 3/32"=1'-0"

Additional scales may be used with the Project Manager's approval.

Scale bars shall be shown within the allocated scale bar box. When multiple scales are used on a
drawing, at least the two main bar scales shall be shown.

1.10 Layers
Section 5 shows the Program's AutoCAD layer numbering convention.

1.11 Quality Control

During the Project Design Phase, the Program Management Team may perform a quality audit on any
AutoCAD drawings received. Conformance to standards will be checked using drawing standards
(DWS) files. The Designer shall maintain a quality program for all project CADD services and certify
adherence to the Program.

3
Section 2
Colors
2.1 Color Presentation
All 256 colors may be used if the colors nominated under monochrome presentation above remain in
black/grey.

2.2 External Reference Files

It is beyond this document's scope to provide detailed instructions and descriptions for all XREF usage
possibilities.

Specific layers are provided within the Drawing templates and scripts on which XREFs reside. These
layers must be used when attaching or overlaying XREFs, i.e., R-XREF-STRU for structural, R-XREF-
MECH for mechanical, etc.

The following guidelines should also apply when working with XREFs:

 The general naming principles and examples for Project XREFs are in Section 5.

 Entities in XREFs shall be correctly layered with color and line typeset to “BY LAYER” to enable
control by layering scripts.

 All XREFs shall have the same base point, i.e., 0, 0, in the World Coordinate System (WCS) for all
civil drawings and some structural drawings.

 XREFs shall carry minimum basic and common text annotations, e.g., contour text, in an
appropriate size and on a separate layer that can be controlled. All other text annotations shall
be put on the individual drawings.

 To control XREF versions internally and externally, each new XREF version created shall be
registered and given a revision in the layout tab.

2.3 Layer Naming Conventions

Use the standard layering convention when developing drawings. The layering convention does allow
customized layers depending on how drawing entities need to be organized. The layering convention
is based on AIA CADD Layer Guidelines – Computer-Aided Design Management Techniques for
Architecture, Engineering, and Facility Management.

2.4 Text/Dimensions and General Annotation

All text input into a CADD drawing file must follow the standards described in this section. The text
styles are contained within the appropriate drawing template.

The Designer will use a single text style called “Simplex.” This style will not have a fixed height.
Therefore, a variable text height is allowed to accommodate the user's needs. The plotted text height
should be 0.1.

4
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

When callouts for existing and future conditions must be shown on the same sheet, the Designer will
use the Simplex font with a 15-degree obliquing angle for the text that delineates existing items. This
will provide the proper appearance for existing text. All notes for existing shall be placed on layers
with an X STATUS code for existing. This information is included within all drawing templates.

When text is part of a line’s symbology such as the property line or centerline designation, it must be
on the layer associated with that line and not a text layer. The color/pen weight should also be
explicitly assigned in order for the text to be readable on the final plot.

2.4.1 Text and Leaders

 Multi leader shall be used for all leaders.

 All notes shall be justified to leader side.

 Leaders shall end with a filled arrow when pointing to an edge or surface or with a dot when
pointing to an area.

 All text, dimensions, and leaders shall be placed on the appropriate annotation layer depending
on what is being called out.

 Leaders must start at the vertical center of the text box and be right- or left- justified depending
on leader orientation.

 For main titles and headings, i.e., plan, elevation, etc., use a 0.2 inch plotted text height (color 7).

2.4.2 Dimensions
 Associative dimensions shall be used.

 Dimensions shall have 0.1 foot text and a 0.18 foot arrow size.

 Dimensions shall be created on layer “G-ANNO-DIMS.”

 All dimensions on structural drawings shall be quoted in feet/inches. The only exceptions to
this are “reduced level,” “coordinates,” and “stations” that are all given in feet.

 All dimensions and levels on civil layout drawings shall be quoted in feet to two decimal places,
e.g., 2,497.00; 14.19.

 Civil detail drawings generally have dimensions in feet/inches. Dual unit dimensioning shall
not appear on any drawing unless a note to that effect is added.

 It is not necessary to give the inch or foot abbreviation because the difference in the unit
magnitude and the presence or absence of a decimal place will make the unit obvious. Where
millifoot decimals must be quoted, i.e., “membrane thickness,” the millifoot abbreviation should
be used.

 When unit symbols are not given on a drawing, the general notes must include a statement of
units, e.g., “All dimensions are in feet/inches (or feet if applicable), and all levels are in
feet/inches.”

5
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

 No dimension duplications should be on the same drawing. Each dimension should be given in
the locations in which it is most clearly seen. Dimension duplications on other drawings should
also be avoided and should only happen after careful consideration.

2.5 Units
Drawing units within AutoCAD will vary between decimal or architectural units depending on the
drawing type. All civil work including yard piping, site plans, and grading plans must be developed in
AutoCAD’s decimal units with the drawing unit understood as being one foot. All other discipline
drawings, i.e., mechanical, structural, architectural, that will be dimensioned in feet and inches will use
AutoCAD’s stacked architectural units. For transmitting information between civil and other
disciplines such as building footprints or pipe connection locations, it will be necessary to scale a
given drawing up or down by a factor of 12.

Angular units will need to be set as required by the individual drawing’s needs; however, 0 degrees
should always remain to the right. Angular precision will be left to the operator’s discretion. This
setting only affects the way the number is displayed not what is stored internally within the drawing
database.

2.6 Line work/Line Types

All line work shall be in accordance with BS EN ISO 128-21:2001 Technical Drawings. General
Principles of Presentation. Preparation of Lines by CADD Systems or equivalent.

Civil/site custom line types have been created for use and are provided in Section 6. All other line
types used in AutoCAD drawings must be based on the default AutoCAD line types from the file
ACAD.LIN.

2.7 Symbols
The symbol convention for the Project is presented in Section 6.

2.8 Referencing
Where appropriate, drawings shall incorporate a horizontal and vertical grid system to allow cross-
referencing. The Designer shall use a logical method of device numbering that is cross-referenced to
facilitate simple drawing use.

2.9 Drawing Setup and Scales

Insert the project border as a block into the “Paper Space” from the “GRAP” project subdirectory at a
scale factor of 1:1 and an insertion point of 0, 0. Refer to Section 6 for appropriate layer on which the
border should reside. Specific title block information will then be entered into the drawing by
inserting the appropriate title block into the border sheet, also from the “GRAP” project subdirectory.
This block will have all required drawing attribute information necessary for the specific project. This
block should not be exploded for any reason. Refer to 2.11 to obtain the correct sheet border/logo etc.

All structure plans, sections, and details shall be drawn full scale (1=1) in “model space.” For example,
a line drawn using AutoCAD showing the outside of a 5’ 4” long wall should be drawn 5’4” (64
AutoCAD architectural units long). The scale for each plan, section, detail, table, etc., to be placed on

6
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

the final drawing will be controlled by selecting the appropriate Paper Space view port magnification
factor, i.e., 1/96xp for 1/8 scale; 1/48xp for 1/4 scale; etc.

NOTE: Design drawings for civil site plans should also be drawn full scale.

2.10 Plotting
Plot style tables (CTB) are used to generate hard copy output. Using these pre-defined configuration
files will ensure a consistent and professional look to all drawings regardless of the plotting device
used.

Note: All Drawings should be saved in Paper Space with the sheet border as the current display.

2.11 Sheet Borders and Title Block Information

The Program will provide a template for the project-specific sheet border along with any logos,
attributed title block, etc.

2.12 Model Space/Paper Space

All drawing shall be set up with the contents in model space at 1:1 but brought into Paper Space via
view ports at the desired scales.

Where XREFs are used, they shall be attached (overlayed) in model space.

Paper Space is mainly for the drawing title sheet that is always attached with insertion point 0, 0.

2.13 Revision/Hold Clouding

Revision clouds shall be used for highlighting any changes/revisions made since the last issue.

Revision clouds and triangles shall be placed in Paper Space for ease of control by scripts.

The arc length of the cloud is generally 10 to maintain consistency.

“HOLD” clouds in red or green are to be reversed clouds and placed in layer A-REVS-BUBL-HOLD.

2.14 Text Mask

All text calling out proposed features and text on detail sheets shall have the text masked with a
standard offset of 1.0.

2.15 Electronic Deliverables

When delivering electronic files to the Project Manager, the Designer shall follow these guidelines:

 PMIS downloads are the preferred method for Program deliverable. Training will be provided
for the Designer.

 Compact Disks (CDs): CDs are an acceptable method for transferring files. These should be
made only on CD-Rs and not of the read/write type. If the “Direct CD” method is used, the CD
should be “closed.” These disks should be labeled, and a complete list of the included files shall
be sent with the CD.

7
Version 2.0 Appendix D • CADD and Plan Preparation Standards

 If files are to be e-mailed, a standard “ZIP” file shall be created that includes the drawings. All
required external references, fonts, etc., shall be delivered with the electronic drawing files. The
maximum file size for this type of deliverable is 10MB. If the file size is larger than 10MB, the
Designer shall refer to one of the above methods.

 Self-extracting “.EXE” files are not an acceptable format for e-mail delivery.
