CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter presents the result, interpretation and discussion of the study with

regards to the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of age, sex, civil status,

highest educational attainment, employment status, position or rank, economic status and

number of years in the service, equipment and facilities, working environment, personal

relation relative to the task performance, level of the job performance. Lastly, the

significant relationship of working environment and job performance of LGU employees

in Taytay, Palawan. Total of 80 employees in Taytay, Palawan who are currently

employed in LGU Taytay, Palawan served as respondents of the study.

I. Demographic Profile of the Respondent

The Demographic profile of the respondent contained their age, sex, civil status,

highest educational attainment, employment status, position or rank, estimated family

income, monthly income, and the length in the service.

Age

Out of 80 respondents, 27 (33.7 %) were within the age range of 21-26 years old;

26 (32.5%) 27-32 years old; 7 (8.7%) 33-38 years old; 10 (12.5%) 39-44 years old; 5

(6.3%) 45-50 years old; 5 (6.3%) 51-56 years old. It implies that most of the employees

belong to the age bracket of 21-26 years old which are most of them are newly graduate.

Sex
As to the sex of the respondents, there were 58 (72.5%) female and 22 (27.5%)

male. This implies that majority of the respondent were females because they prefer an

office work. Taytay is a rural area and the living there is agriculture so men prefer to

work in the farm than to an office..

Civil Status

In terms of civil status, forty or 50.0% are single, thirty seven or 46.3 are married

and three or 3.8 are widowed. It entails that many of the employees who are working are

single.

Highest Educational Attainment

Based on the result, sixty or 75.0% are college graduate, eighteen or 22.5 are

college level, one or 1.3% is high school level while one or 1.3% answered post graduate

( master’s degree and Ph. D.). It implies that majority of the respondents are college

graduate which entails that the LGU of Taytay is giving priority for college graduate.

Employment Status

In terms of employment status, thirty two or 40.0% are permanent, thirty or

37.5% are job order, sixteen or 20.0% are contractual while two or 2.5 % are temporary.

The result confirmed that most of the respondents that are working are permanent.

Position or Rank

As to the position or rank, nineteen or 23.7% answered clerk I, nine or 11.2% are

clerk III, six or 7.5% are clerk II, five or 6.3% are accountant, four or 5.0% are revenue

collection clerk II, four or 5.0% are improvement facilitator, three or 3.7% are admin
assistant, two or 2.5% are negosyo center coordinator, two or 2.5% are environmental

management specialist, two or 2.5% are technical facilitator, two or 2.5% are data

analyst, two or 2.5% are nutrition analyst, one or 1.2% is community facilitator,

management audit specialist, management audit specialist, social welfare assistant,

security guard II, computer operator, bookkeeper one or 1.2% is management audit

specialist, one or 1.2% is, one or 1.2% is security guard II, and twelve or 15.0% are no

response. The result shows that majority or the respondents are clerk I.

Family Income

Twenty or 25.0% have a salary range from Php21,000 - Php30,000, followed by

the seventeen or 21.2% have an income of Php11,000 – Php20,000, while eleven or

13.7% have income range to Php31,000 – Php40,000, eight or 10.0% Re Php10,000

below, four or 5.0% answered Php51,000 above, three or 3.7% are Php41,000 –

Php50,000 while seventeen or 21.2% are no response. It implies that majority of the

respondents having a family income ranging from Php21, 000 to Php30, 000.

Monthly Salary

In terms of monthly income thirty five or 43.7% answered Php6,000 – Php10,000,

thirty one or 38.7% are Php11,000 – Php20,000, four or 5.0% are Php5,000 and below,

three or 3.7% are Php26,000 – Php30,000, two or 2.5% are Php36,000 – Php40,000, one

or 1.2% are Php16,000 – Php20,000, one or 1.2% are Php31,000 – Php35,000, one or

1.2% Php46,000 – Php50,000. It implies that the salary of the respondents are ranging

from Php11,000 to Php15,000.

Number of Years in the Service


Out of 80 respondents, 27 (33.7 %) were within the year range of 1-3 years; 25

(31.2 %) less than 1 year; 8 (10.0%) 4 -6 years; 6 (7.5%) 7-9 years; 4 (5.0%) 10-12 years;

3 (3.7%) 13-15 years; 2 (2.5%) 19-21 years; 1 (1.2%) 16-18 years; It implies that most

of the respondents belong to the year bracket of 1-3 years in the service.

II. Facilities and equipment of LGU Taytay

Facilities

Table 2 shows the assessment of the respondents regarding to their facilities.

Result shows 64 or 80.0% answered the availability of conference room; 72 or 90% of

rest room; 68 or 85.0 of lobby; 69 or 86.2 of parking lot; 58 or 72.5 of internet

connection; while only 3 or 3.7 answered the availability of cafeteria which is very

important to the .workplace. According to Hilakari, Luke (2014), employees need to have

access to hygienic facilities for preparing and eating meals while at work

According to Chand, Neelam (2015), providing better physical facilities makes

workers to pay more attention towards work and thus increases their productivity.

Equipment

Table 2 shows the assessment of the respondents regarding to their equipments.

80 or 100% answered the availability of table, computer, and printer, 79 or 98.7% are

file-cabinet, 67 or 83.7% are scanner, xerox machine and bulletin board, 60 or 75.0% are

power point projector,58 or 72.5% are power back-up, 35 or 43.7 are TV, WiFi, durabox,

chairs and laminator while only 23 or 28.7% responded the availability of the telephone
which should be always provided because it is a tool to communicate with clients or in

any transaction and it would be difficult to operate without a reliable telephone.

Providing complete equipment in the workplace will increase the productivity of its

workers.

III. Working Environment of LGU Taytay, Palawan in Terms of Physical Facilities

The table 3 presents working environment in terms of physical facilities. Result

shows that employees answered “moderately available” in standard windows for offices

with a mean of 3.96; enough table per employee with a mean of 3.94; chairs with a mean

of 3.70; standard doors for offices with a mean of 3.64; trash bin with a mean of 3.69;

accessible and clean toilets with a mean of 4.0; employees answered “available” for

employee lounge with a mean of 3.12; air conditioned room with a mean of 3.41;

emergency exits, signages and warnings with a mean of 3.49;washing area with a mean

of 3.31; comfortable working station with a mean of 3.40;fire extinguisher and other

emergency materials with a mean of 3.44; facilities for pregnant or nursing workers to

rest with a mean of 3.21; while the compost pit is “not available” with a mean of 1.0.

Therefore, the physical facilities is “available” with an overall mean of 3.34

III a. Working Environment of LGU Taytay Palawan in terms of Office Equipment

The table 3.a presents working environment in terms of office equipment. Result

shows that employees answered “moderately available” in xerox machines with a mean

of 3.75; desktop computer with a mean of 3.84; printer with a mean of 3.87; water

dispenser with a mean of 3.79; and camera with a mean of 3.52; employees answered

“less available” for handset radio with a mean of 1.61; telephone with a mean of 2.05;
they answered “not available” for refrigerator with a mean of 1.31. Therefore, the table

shows that the office equipment was “available” with an overall mean of 2.97.

According to Weitzel (2017), physical equipment is needed to perform a task at

work, it is important for your business to have the correct tools available for your

employees to do their work effectively.

III b. Working Environment in Terms of Office Supplies and Materials

The table 3.b presents working environment in terms of office supplies and

materials. Result shows that employees answered “very available” in office papers

(bond papers, folders, envelopes) and writing materials (pencil, ballpoint, marker) with a

mean of 3.60; cleaning materials with a mean of 3.55; and respondents answered

“available” in health and sanitary supplies with a mean of 3.50.Therefore, the table

reveals that office supplies and materials was “moderately available” with an overall

mean of 3.56.

The management should give emphasis in providing health and sanitary supplies

for its employees. According to the UNISON (2016), it is the responsibilities of the

employers to ensure the health and safety of the employees

III c. Working Environment of LGU Taytay Palawan in Terms of Personal Relation


Relative to Task Performance

The table 3.c presents working environment in terms of personal relation relative

to task performance. The respondent got the following mean rating: 4.57 () for statement

1 (We have a clear plan of action for the department), 4.51 (always) for statement 2 (The

department has a clear division of responsibilities), 4.64 (always) for statement 3


(Everyone is treated fairly and with respect), 4.42 (often) for statement 4 (Duties are

equally divided between co-workers), 4.86 (always) for statement 5 (There are no cases

of harassment or bullying), 4.61 (always) for statement 6 (Women and men have the

same opportunities for career and development), 4.55 (always) for statement 7 (I feel I

am involved in the decisions made at my department), 4.49 (often) for statement 8 (We

can freely state our opinions), 4.60 (always) for statement 9 (I am satisfied with the way I

am treated), 4.52 (always) for statement 10 (The goal and methods fixed for my job are

perfectly clear and planned), 4.55 (always) for statement 11 (My supervisor provides me

with feedback and guidance), 5.00 (always) for statement 12 (Everyone is treated fairly

and with respect) . Therefore, the working environment in terms of personal relation

relative to task performance has a descriptive rating of “always” with an overall mean of

4.61.

IV. Performance of LGU Employees in Taytay Palawan

The table 4 presents performance of LGU employees in Taytay Palawan.

The respondent got the following mean rating: 4.25 (very satisfactory) for statement 1

(Observed punctuality or doing something at the expected or planned time), 4.32 (very

satisfactory)for statement 2 (Applied work knowledge from skills that comes from

experience or education), 4.26 (very satisfactory) for statement 3 (Provide high level of

value of work), 4.20 (very satisfactory)for statement 4 (Volume of acceptable work

output), 4.25 (very satisfactory)for statement 5 (Met deadline on task, reports and pass on

time), 4.27 (very satisfactory)for statement 6 (Adapted to associate with other

colleagues), 4.40 (very satisfactory)for statement 7 (Willingness to accept duties,

activities and task), 4.42 (very satisfactory) for statement 8 (Willingness to accept policy
of agency), 4.17 (very satisfactory)for statement 9 (Knowledge or skill to operate office

equipment), 4.22 (very satisfactory)for statement 10 (Ability to adopt human relation

skills or working with others), 4.14 (very satisfactory) for statement 11 (Good

performance in terms of conveying information to another effectively and efficiently),

3.60 (outstanding)for statement 12 (Performed using technical software applications

using Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point), 4.06 (very satisfactory) for statement 13

(Confident to perform task required), 4.22 (very satisfactory) for statement 14

(Consistency work outputs are always in good quality). Therefore, the job performance of

the respondents are “very satisfactory” with an overall mean of4.27.

Result entails that the management always giving emphasis in the working

environment thus giving a very satisfactory in the job performance of its employees.

Relationship between Working Environment and Job Performance

Table presents the relationship between working environment job performance

between the two variables; facilities have a P-value of .000, equipment have a P-value

.005, and personal relation relative to task performance has a P-value of .000. Therefore,

the null hypothesis was rejected while supplies have a P-value of .510 and the null

hypothesis was accepted.

As an overview, job performance of the employees has something to do with its

working environment. Employees cannot perform towards its specific task if they are not

satisfied to its working environment especially the presence of insufficient facilities,

equipment, supplies and materials.


According to Bushiri (2014), an attractive and supportive working

environment provide conditions that enable employees to perform effectively, making

best use of their knowledge, skills and competences and the available resources in order

to provide high-quality of organization service. Therefore it is the responsibilities of the

organization to provide friendly working environment which will influence employees to

work comfortable and perform their job. It was found out that most factors that comprise

workplace influence employee’s behavior. This is however the working environment

affects the employee in one way or the other and employees play a very crucial role in an

organization.
