PART – A
(Compulsory Question)

1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Define Hertzian dipole.
(b) An antenna has a field pattern given by 𝐸(𝜃) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0° ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 90°. Find the HPBW.
(c) Give an expression of radiation resistance of a small loop.
(d) Explain gain and impedance of Monofilar axial helix antenna.
(e) While measuring gain of a horn antenna the gain of the oscillator was set for 9.00 GHz and the
attenuation inserted was found to be 9.8 dB. Calculate the gain of the horn. The distance between the
two horns was 35 cm.
(f) What is flat reflector?
(g) Differentiate isotropic source and non-isotropic source.
(h) Name the parasitic elements used in Yagi-Uda array.
(i) Define the terms MUF and skip distance.
(j) What is meant by Faraday’s rotation?

PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 Compute the radiation resistance, the power radiated and efficiency of an antenna having total resistance
of 50 ohms, an effective height of 60.96 meters and a current of 50 A (rms) at 0.480 MHz.

3 Derive the electric and magnetic field equations of a 𝜆/4 monopole antenna.
UNIT – II
4 (a) Derive the relation between circumference spacing turn lengths and pitch angle of a helix.
(b) Calculate in db the directivity of 20 turn helix, having 𝛼 = 12°, circumference equal to one wavelength.
OR
5 Find out the length L width W and half flare angle 𝜃𝐸 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃𝐸 of a pyramidal horn antenna for which the
mouth height ℎ = 10𝜆. The horn is fed by rectangular waveguide with 𝑇𝐸10 mode.
UNIT – III
6 Explain the corner reflector antennas and its design considerations.
OR
7 Describe the principle of operation and applications of parabolic reflectors and derive its necessary
equations.
UNIT – IV
8 Find the direction of pattern maxima, pattern minima and beam width of major lobe for an array of
n sources with equal amplitude and spacing in broadside case.
OR
9 Explain in detail about: (i) Directivity measurement. (ii) Gain measurement.
UNIT – V
10 (a) How does the earth affect ground wave propagation?
(b) Explain the mechanism of ionosphere propagation.
OR
11 Describe the structure of the atmosphere and specify the factors affecting the radio wave propagation.
