4MM005: Module assignment

This module is assessed in two parts

Part 1 – Individual

For the first part you are required, individually, to design and produce a report from the
provided case studies, which contains the following: -
1. Definition of the problem with aim and objectives of the task set.
2. An introduction to your solution to the problem which explains clearly the
background and scope of the task.
3. A specification of the user requirements based on the aim and objectives of the
project and research conducted.
4. A screen and menu structure showing good use of HCI principles for your solution
( low fidelity prototype of solution)
5. A clear project plan.
6. List of references relevant to the problem, accurately using Harvard notation.

The report must be completed and handed in by teaching week 12 of semester 1. Hand in
your report to your tutor during the class.

Part 2 – Group

For the second part of the assessment you are required, within a group (usually 3-4
persons), to design and produce a report and high fidelity prototype from the provided case
studies.

The report must be completed and handed in by teaching week 12 of semester 2. Hand in
your report to your tutor during the class.

Your group report must cover the following: -

1. A review of available and relevant hardware and software that would be a suitable
solution to your given task.
2. A screen and menu structure showing good use of HCI principles for your solution
(Produce a high fidelity prototype)
3. Project plan and system development life cycle.
4. Evaluation of development and prototype.
5. List of references relevant to the problem, accurately using Harvard notation.
 A statement from each member of your project group stating what their contribution to the
work was (no more than 500 words each)

4MM005: Individual Case study

This case study is in outline form only and will require further research for the successful
completion of the task.
Individual Case study 1

For 4CC001 - 4CC002 students

A school attendance systems is required that can be accessed securely by school staff and
student parents alike. Usability and simple functionality is considered crucial to the success
of the project. No hardware specification or operating platform is available at this time.

You will need to conduct research into currently available systems in order to develop a full
specification.

Specific details of the system will be discussed at the project tutorial meetings and you are
expected to extend this work based on your own individual research and ideas. The project
has a six month deadline.

The system requires the following details to be made available:

 Students
 Staff
 Attendance

They also require access to the data to be restricted so that only those authorised to view
details are allowed to access those details. Similar restrictions are to be put in place for
updating details.
You will be expected to discuss and develop further improvements in your group meetings.
Consideration should be given to developing a set of easy to use interfaces using best
practice HCI features.
You are not required to create a fully functional system, but should be able to demonstrate
adequately how it would work to your clients, e.g. have a realistic transition between
screens.

For 4CS001 - 4CC001 students

A small local estate agents requires a system that will help them compete with there larger
competitors. The company has 10 members of staff and is operated from a single location in
Wolverhampton. Only viewing of property is required externally from the business at
present. Usability and simple functionality is considered crucial to the success of the
project.

The system will be used to:

 Advertise houses for sale
 Advertise the services available
 Expand the business

You will be expected to discuss and develop further improvements in your group meetings.

For 4CC002 – 4CI006 students

A small local company requires a system to monitor the attendance of employees (50) in
the work environment (Time-Clock) With current expanding legislation in the health and
safety domain a system is required with in the next six month to give accurate staffing
information concerning employees on-site and off-site activities on a day by day basis. The
company would prefer if the information gathered could be securely view externally.

You will need to conduct research into currently available systems in order to develop a full
specification.

Specific details of the system will be discussed at the project tutorial meetings and you are
expected to extend this work based on your own individual research and ideas.

The system that you design should include all necessary functionality to enable complete
computerisation.

A local company trading in furniture having fifty employees and 1000 customers require a
new information system to hold its customer records.
Your task is to design a new information system that will support, manage, and control the
organisations customer records. Investigate current CRM systems. Identify functionality
required and project plan the development and implementation of such a system. Pay close
attention to the system requirements gathering and monitoring change. The company has a
six month deadline. The purpose of the development is to replace the current paper based
solution.
