ND Marist Academy Guide Checklist: Walking Tour

PLEASE BE SURE TO SH ARE ALL TH AT ND MARIST H AS TO OFFER!

Day of Event
• Sunday, November 5, 2017
• Arrive no later than 12:45 p.m.
• The Open House begins at 1 p.m., and ends at 4 p.m. Students should be picked up by 4:00 p.m.
• Dress in school dress uniform, like you do for Mass on Wednesdays.
• Be on your best behavior while on tours and while waiting for tours.
• Tour Guides will meet in a classroom and will wait until guests are available to provide tours.

Classroom Highlights in Tour Order


JK-4 (Miss Bicknell and Mrs. Younan)
• Students in JK are here five days a week from 7:45 a.m. to 3:05 p.m., just like the rest of us.
• Our JK students get to go to all the same specials classes as we do. They even have Spanish five days a week!
• Unlike most preschools, our JK is curriculum-based, so the students learn a lot about reading, writing, math
and lots of other subjects.

Kindergarten (Mrs. Medina)


• Our kindergarten students are here all day, five days a week, and they get to go to all the specials classes, just
like us.
• Kindergarteners learn how to be really good readers and writers, and they also get a chance to learn social skills
through a lot of different activities.
• Kindergarteners get a lot of special guests who visit as readers and speakers.

Art (Mrs. Zimmerman)


• All students have art twice a week. Share with families what you are currently making in art.
• We look at art from around the world, learn about famous artists, and make art inspired by their work.
• We paint, draw, make paper mache, use a lot of different materials to create 2-D and 3-D art, and are
encouraged to be risk takers as we explore materials.

JK-3 (Mrs. Fruchey)

and lots of other subjects.

1st Grade (Mrs. Kriesel)


• First graders do a mini-Chamber of Commerce lesson. Every student picks a profession that he/she would like
to have in the future, then they research what that job is all about and share what they learned in a presentation
to the class.
• Last year the 1st grade class hosted an all-school assembly with Marc Rosenthal and his “Animal Magic” show
for the second consecutive year.
2nd Grade (Mrs. Dery)
• Last year during their “Helping Hands” unit, 2nd graders hosted a book drive and delivered the books to Grace
Centers of Hope and Pontiac Lighthouse.
• During the science unit “What’s the Matter,” 2nd graders go on a field trip to the Ann Arbor Hands-On
Museum and learn about different landforms (solids), bodies of water (liquids), and the water cycle.

3rd Grade (Mrs. Stuk & Mr. Patterson)


• Third graders learn a lot about multiplication, division and fractions.
• Third graders study Michigan history, and in February the will be travel to the state capitol.
• Third graders also study weather and climate in science.

4th Grade (Mrs. Campbell & Mrs. Dugan)


• Students in 4th grade start learning algebra.
• In Phase 3, 4th graders will begin looking at how we share the planet with other countries and communities.
They will look at how resources are unevenly distributed and how they need to take part of conserving energy.
In their summative assessment, students create newspapers about conservation.
• In the “Built Tough” unit, 4th graders dissect owl pellets and reconstruct the animal bones into the animal that
was eaten by the owl.
• The coolest project the 4th graders do is the Economy project. Every student thinks of a product to make and
market to the rest of the school. Then for a couple days all the students in the whole school get a chance to go
to the 4th grade classroom and purchase those products.

5th Grade (Miss McLaughlin & Mrs. Wrobel)


• In 5th grade, students learn about early American history and the Revolutionary War.
• Fifth graders also get to do the National Geographic Bee and the Oakland Press Regional Spelling Bee.
• The highlight of 5th grade is a three-day trip to Mackinac Island in May. Students have the opportunity to eat
lunch at the Grand Hotel, among other fun and educational experiences.
• The 5th grade students will participate in the IB Exhibition in the spring. In small groups, students will present
on topics they are passionate about to fellow students, parents and guests.
• Fifth grade prepares students for our Middle Division, located right down the street.

Spanish (Mrs. Tapia and Miss Wyza)


• Everyone in our school–even JK students–takes Spanish. Our teacher asks us questions in Spanish and we
respond in Spanish using our vocabulary words.
• We do a lot of fun things, like celebrate Day of the Dead Mass in November, and International Day in May.
• Some of the assignments include creating a cartoon in Spanish, writing a floor plan in Spanish, creating menus,
and writing and illustrating books in Spanish.

Music (Ms. Hall)


• All students at the Lower Division attend music class three times per week.
• Students experience a caring environment that supports their efforts to achieve educational excellence through
use of an inquiry-based approach to learning.
• All students learn music concepts including musical notation, melody, rhythm, tempo, steady beat, dynamics,
form, and improvisation.
• 3rd grade students learn to play the recorder during the second semester.
• 4th & 5th grade students have the option of participating in Introductory Band.
• 4th & 5th grade students participate in Choir.
• All students perform twice a year, for the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert.
• 3rd – 5th grade students have the option of performing in a theatrical production in the spring.
Technology (Mrs. Krankel)
• All students have a school-issued iPad to facilitate learning in the classroom and at home. Appropriate grade
level apps are installed on devices.
• By the time students complete 5th grade they are fluent in word processing, creating presentations, and
managing cloud storage. Additional media-creation apps used include PicCollage, StopMotion, and
iMovie. Students also participate annually in the "Hour of Code," practice keyboarding skills, and learn how to
be responsible digital citizens.

** Mrs. Kirk and Mr. Frank will also be in the Teacher-Work Room. Mrs. Kirk will be able to talk about the
reading program at NDMA and Mr. Frank will be able to talk about the IB program.

Media Center or Library (Mr. Madej)

• Students in JK through 5th grade have library once a week.


• Everyone can check out a book per week. We have to take good care of them and return them on time before
we can check out another book.
• We have access to a lot of cool books. We get new books all the time, but we also have a lot of classic books.

Physical Education (Mr. Battani)


• All students have physical education once a week. We also sometimes have indoor recess, especially if it’s too
snowy, cold or rainy.
• The assembly hall is used for IB Assemblies, Masses, Daddy-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Fun Night, and lots
of other fun events that happen throughout the school year.

H ot Lunch
• This is where we pick up our hot lunch every day. A lot of students get hot lunch, but a lot also bring a lunch
from home.
• Flik provides our lunches, we have 4 healthy options to choose each day.
• Milk also may be purchased for the year.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS IN TH E BREEZWAY!

• Guide guests into the assembly hall to show them what clubs/sports we have to offer at NDMA.
• Guests should help themselves to the food and refreshments offered by our friendly moms and dads.
• Introduce your guests to parents who already have students at Notre Dame.
