Learning Together at Home

One way you can encourage exploration of music is to listen to different styles of music with
your child and play instruments made out of common household items such as boxes and
wooden spoons, a container or the edge of the couch you can pretend to play piano on, or even
just using your body as an instrument by clapping your hands and stomping feet.

Another way to encourage music exploration is to sing songs with children. You can use
things such as cups instead of a microphone to show how sound can be amplified. You can
also talk about performance and do a family talent show with singing/instruments.
Early Childhood Fundamentals

Did you know?

Asking questions while reading with young children helps them develop key skills needed for
later reading success. For example, children learn how to predict what comes next in a
sequence of events, they learn new vocabulary and appropriate contexts to use them, and they
learn comprehension skills as they are asked questions that help them think about key
elements of the story.
