The World Before Her

By the year 2012, Nisha Pahuja wrote and directed a documentary film entitled
“The World Before Her”. This is about the experiences of women in India who seems
to be worlds apart but is only situated in a 3.287 million km² country, the world
before her inside “The Movement” and the world before her inside the pageant.

At the beginning of the film, the “worlds” were being introduced. Prachi, a
member of The Movement is describing that people at present, as they continues to
become modernized, they are forgetting their history. On the other hand, Ruhi wanted
to pursue her dreams even though India is known to be Patriarchal which supports the
women less.

The two faces being showed in the film reveals similarities in terms of training,
discipline and achieving goal. The Hindu training camp is giving spiritual, mental and
physical training to the girls who are attending the camp. They are instilling the
values of Hinduism and opening the minds of this girls towards what they should do,
how they should act and how they will present themselves being a woman, an Indian
and a believer of Hinduism. On the other side of the film, pageant trainors are also
molding the ladies to be at their best in every step of the competition. While the
candidates are doing the things they have to do in order to achieve their goal, to
crowned Ms. India. Part of the film shows how women are being treated and their
supposed roles as women in a male-dominated setting.

Behaviorism and Feminism are two philosophies that can be associated to the
events shown from the documentary film. Behaviorism is a philosophy that provides
the connection between conditioning and the behavior of the person, while Feminism
is a philosophy that analyzes baises agains women and presumes women’s equality.

Hundi is the superior religion.

People should not adopt westernized culture because India also has its own culture.
Indian people should know how they will act in accordance to the teaching of
Hinduism.
Ladies should be polished to be the best they can.
They are born in the 21st century so they can do and achieve what ever they want.
The goal is to bring home the crown.
Such words are being mention in non-verbatim during the film, this is a sort of
conditioning, instilling behavior to the participants using their stumuli.

Feminism is very evident in the film since it is showing events about violence
against women, lack of support, and discrimination against women. Indian people
view women as home makers and not career persons. There are a lot of women who
wanted to pursue their dreams, unfortunately it seems like a dim light is shedded to
them.
