A fourth-year cabinetmaker apprentice and

2015 Strathmore High School (SHS) gradu-
ate, Taylor Desjardins has built a reputation
2019 Passion Play for himself as one of Canada’s best cabinet-
makers.
Building on that, Desjardins is now taking
Page 16 his talents to the WorldSkills competition in
Russia Aug. 22-27 to compete alongside team
Canada.
Every two years, WorldSkills hosts the
world championships of skills which attracts
more than 1,600 Competitors from more
than 60 countries. At this event, young peo-
ple from all corners of the globe gather to-
gether for the chance to win a prestigious
medal in their chosen skill. The competitors
Tri-Smore Triathlon represent the best of their peers and are se-
lected from skills competitions that are held
in WorldSkills Member countries and regions.
Throughout his high school years, Desjar-
dins had a passion for working with lumber
and solid materials – he completed six con-
struction classes during his three years at
SHS. Veering away from the set high school
curriculum and instead designing his own
projects to build, Desjardins was quick to
connect with the creativity woodworking of-
fered.
“My teacher Mr. Clark was an amazing
teacher and mentor,” said Desjardins. “He

the right thing and approved the Trans
Mountain expansion. However, what the
Liberals failed to do is commit to a con-
struction date for this vital pipeline proj-
ect.
“Thousands of Canadian oil and gas
workers, including many in our riding of
Bow River, have been patiently waiting
for this project to start. It is unaccept-
able that the Trudeau Liberals failed once
again to put forward a comprehensive
construction plan,” said Shields. “This
pipeline project has been approved three
times, yet not a single inch of new pipe-
line has been laid.”
Canadians are rightly concerned and
want to know how this time will be any
different. The Trudeau Liberals must an-
swer these vital questions: will construc-
tion of the pipeline begin in Burnaby this
summer? When will the pipeline be in
service? Who will own and operate the
pipeline? How will the Trudeau Liberals
handle new court challenges? How much
have the Liberal delays cost taxpayers?
“The Prime Minister has said he wants
to ‘phase out’ Canada’s oil and gas sec-
tor,” added Shields. “Energy workers and
their families deserve a government that
champions energy projects, instead of
killing them with last minute rule chang-
es.”

Obituary
SKIBSTED, Willard Carl
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Willard
Skibsted announce his passing at the age of 83. Willard passed away
peacefully at Dream Acres with Doris, his soul-mate and wife of 64
years by his side, and his family.
He was a loving father of five children, Mardy (Janet) Skibsted, Kim Skibsted, Tammy
(Darryl) Roppel, Shane (Sandy) Skibsted and Michele Skibsted (Rick Strobridge);
An exceptional grandfather, affectionately called Pop, to 7 grandchildren, Candace
Roppel-Bader (Byron Bader), Brant Skibsted (Jayme Hall), Jayden Skibsted (Steph
Plante), Bruce (Jenna) Skibsted, Daylyn (Stu) Kolynchuk, Kennedy and Sydney Stew-
art; and 6 great-grandchildren, Theoren and Harrison Bader, Sage and Cila Skibsted
and Kane and Kinsley Kolynchuk. Willard is also survived by his sister Norma (John)
Hausberg of Calgary and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Carl and Gladys; his brothers Donald, Robert,
Eric, Vernon; sisters Grayce and Shirley; grandchildren Jeanine and Jordan Roppel.
Willard was born in Drumheller on October 24, 1935 and lived in Calgary until 1951.
He was 16 years old when he broke his leg and had to move out of the City to the
farm at Cheadle, so he could take the school bus to Strathmore to finish high school.

Doug Taylor Photos In June of last year he attended a Pig Roast hosted by the Cheadle Lions Club and
was honored as one of only two chartered members remaining, for 55 years of
service. His close friend and neighbor John Keer was the other member. Willard was
a proud leader of the Cheadle 4-H Beef Club and was a strong advocate for Public
Speaking.
Willard and Doris enjoyed travelling and were big hockey fans. They held season
tickets to the Calgary Flames for 30 years, with John and Carol Keer, beginning with
the first game ever played in the new Saddledome.
Dad was very appreciative of Mom’s good cooking and extremely thankful for her
loving care and support. He kept his sense of humor and was grateful for the time
he had, to enjoy visits with family and friends. His greatest love was his family. He
was so proud of all of us and made sure we all knew how special we were. He was
very much adored by all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and
will be deeply missed.
We want to express our gratitude for the support provided by Dr. Senzani and the
caring staff at Strathmore Home Care. We also want to express our sincere appre-
ciation to Nola for volunteering her time and for her generosity and kindness. Dad
looked forward to your visits and enjoyed the crib matches.
We will be forever grateful to Sharon and Dennis for their compassionate loving
care and keeping Dad so comfortable throughout his journey. Dad enjoyed Bill’s
companionship and Eileen’s kindness. Dream Acres was truly a warm and wonderful
home full of love.
A Celebration in honor of Willard will take place on Friday, June 28, 2019 at Hope
Community Covenant Church (245 Brent Blvd. Strathmore) at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family asks you to consider making a donation to the Wheatland

Obituary
YAKIWCHUK, Edward Frederick “Eddy”
October 28, 1940 – June 20, 2019
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family announces
that Eddy’s journey with us has come to a peaceful end.
Eddy endured years of both Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Dis-
eases he feared the most in life. The challenges he faced and endured ultimately
led him to reside as a patient for four years at Sunrise Gardens in Brooks, AB. While
his health challenges changed him physically and mentally, the sparkle in his eyes
and smile never dulled.
Left to celebrate his 78 wonderful years of life are Louise, his wife of 54 years;
daughter Carla and her husband Ashley and Eddy’s two greatest treasures, his
grandchildren, Hayley and Chace. He also leaves his two sisters Justine Katerynch
and Elsie Kutnikoff, and his brother Michael (Brenda) Yakiwchuk. Uncle Eddy has
numerous nieces and nephews who have many fond and funny memories.
Eddy is now rejoined with his brother Morris and parents Mike and Annie. He also
rejoins numerous friends he so dearly cherished.
He was born on his family farm October 28, 1940 near Richard, Saskatchewan to
Mike and Annie Yakiwchuk. He resided and worked hard on the farm until he moved
to Edmonton to work for Air Canada Cargo. It was there he met and married Louise
on May 1, 1965 and they made their way back to Louise’s family farm near Bassano.
Eddy became a passionate and dedicated grain and animal farmer. He taught his
family the love of the land and animals. He was a fixer of all things. A caring and de-
pendent neighbor. He always enjoyed meeting new people at any given time or day.
He loved home cooked meals, good conversation and crazy stories. He had a sense
of humor and a laugh no one can forget. His love for all things, cookies, chocolate,
chips and ice cream has been graciously passed onto his grandkids.
We want to express our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Coetzee and all the staff
at Sunrise Gardens, Duchess ward, for the care, comfort and unconditional love they
provided for Eddy throughout the remainder of his life. You all helped to keep the
essence of Eddy going.
At Eddy’s request a private service will be held for the family, and a celebration for
friends will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to
consider making a donation in Eddy’s memory to Sunrise Gardens, (c/o Residence
Council, 1235 – 3 Street, Brooks, AB T1R 0P7). This council provides opportunities
such as bands to entertain the residents. Many of you know how much Eddy loved
those dance nights and all the music.
Our world became a little quieter as Eddy moved on to his next journey. However,
we can all smile and chuckle knowing Heaven became is little more louder with the
laughter and shenanigans that Eddy is now embracing. Nostrovia!
To send condolences, please visit Eddy’s obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.
