On June 28, 2019 at approximately 7:55 PM a Madison Police

officer conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation on a

2015 red Toyota Corolla. The driver of the vehicle stopped the

Toyota in the parking lot of the Shell Fuel Station at Highway

463 and Grandview Boulevard. As the officer conducted the

traffic stop the driver had stepped out of the vehicle to be

questioned due to the smell of marijuana emanating from the

interior of the car. At this time another officer arrived to

assist.
The officers began to pat the driver down for weapons at which

time he resisted, pushing away from the officers and running

back to the driver’s side of the vehicle. He gained entry on

the driver’s side of the Toyota with the door open at which time

the assisting officer attempted to stop the subject and place

the car in park. The car sped off dragging the assisting

officer approximately 20 yards. As the vehicle was dragging the

assisting officer the other officer discharged one round from

his service weapon into the left rear door of the vehicle. No

one was struck by the discharge. The officer being dragged was

able to break free at which time the vehicle continued to speed

off south on Grandview Boulevard. The originating officer began

pursuing the fleeing vehicle with his police vehicle. The

fleeing vehicle then made a U-turn in the parking lot of the

Zaxby’s Restaurant on Grandview Boulevard and then proceeded

north. The driver then turned east onto Highway 463 and Main

Street and then north onto Highway 51. The Madison County

Sheriff’s Office was notified and assisted with the pursuit as

it entered Madison County on Highway 51. As the vehicle neared

Highway 51 and Hard Times Road deputies deployed stop sticks

after which the fleeing vehicle’s tires deflated. The fleeing

vehicle came to a stop on the side of the road in a ditch after

which the driver fled into a wooded area. Officers and deputies

conducted a foot pursuit of the suspect into the woods. Upon

catching him he continued to resist the officers and deputies

who were able to place the subject under arrest. During the

arrest the suspect bit a police officer.

After the arrest the suspect indicated he had ingested

marijuana, heroin and crystal methamphetamine during the

pursuit. He was transported to a local hospital due to his

statements of ingesting narcotics. Marijuana and crystal

methamphetamine were found on the scene of the original traffic

stop by officers.

The suspect was identified as Brian Baker, age 28, of Brandon,

MS. Further investigation revealed that Baker was also wanted

for escape by the Mississippi Department of Corrections from the

Greenwood Delta Correctional Institute on 6/26/2019.

Upon his release from the hospital Baker will be charged with

traffic violations, aggravated assault of a police officer,

felony fleeing, and possession of controlled substances.

Additionally, a hold has been placed on Baker by the Mississippi

Department of Corrections.

The officer who was dragged by the vehicle did not suffer

injury other than minor scrapes. The officer who was bit was

treated at a local hospital and released.
