8.3 Welding Machine for welding butt joints.

9.0 PREPARATORY WORKS

9.1 Setting Out

9.1.1 Surveyor shall set out the detention pond location for piling work.

9.1.2 The surveyor shall set up each pile point from this detention pond area.

9.1.3 The supplier for the precast concrete pile shall be approved by the SO / Civil and Structural
Consultant.

9.1.4 The Piling Subcontractor shall submit the sequence of pile driving layout. These shall be
submitted for approval.

9.1.5 Pile shoe design is site specific. Type of pile shoe used shall be instructed by the Structural
Consultants.

9.1.6 Certificate of qualified welder’(s) to be submitted and approved prior to any site piling works.

9.2 Marking

9.2.1 Prior to driving, the piles shall be clearly marked with penetration length.

9.2.2 Each pile shall be marked at intervals of 1ft along its length before being driven.

10.0 WORK METHODOLOGY

10.1. Driving of Piles

10.1.1. The pile location is to be set out by the surveyor.

10.1.2. Piles should be installed by percussion method using hydraulic hammer.

10.1.3. Maneuver the piling base machine to align with pile point.

10.1.4. Raise the hammer and helmet up to the top of the leader.

10.1.5. Pitch the initial pile segment using a winch in such a way until the pile head is inserted into
the helmet.

10.1.6. Ensure that the hammer, helmet and pile are correctly aligned and vertical before driving
commences. Control verticality by referencing the pile against the plumb strings. (Plumb
bob establishment) Pile verticality check to be done at 2 directions perpendicular to each
other.

PRECAST PILING WORKS Page : 3 of 5

10.1.7. Before driving, the verticality of the pile should be checked using sprit level.

10.1.8. Before driving, make sure that the pile driving record is properly filled with the information
of the pile.

10.1.9. After a few blows, check pile location, alignment and verticality again.

10.1.10. The driving direction of hammer, center of helmet’s shaft and pile should be maintained on
a same straight line at all times.

10.1.11. When the initial pile segment is driven close to ground surface, stop driving and remove
the hammer and helmet.
10.1.12. If pile extension is required, prepare the extension pile segment and clean the lower and
upper pile's joint plates to remove mud, rust etc.

10.1.13. Pitch the extension pile segment up and place it on top of the initial pile segment. These
two piles shall be aligned properly.

10.1.14. Perform butt welding along the whole perimeter of jointing plates. Check the welded joint
and apply one coat of iron oxide paint on the welded part to avoid corrosion. Resume
driving.

10.1.15. The pile shall be driven to set. The required set for the last ten (10) blows shall be
determined from Table 193 Reynolds handbook on page 4 of this work instruction.

10.1.16. Upon unsuccessful driving of the last extended pile, works will stop and approving
representative shall be informed.

10.1.17. Upon completion of the piling work for the whole block the piles are cut off to ground level.
A preliminary survey i.e. as built survey of pile at ground level is carried out by the oiling
subcontractor’s surveyor. If there is any deviation from specification, the piling
subcontractor shall propose remedial measures. The approved remedial measure is to be
carried out thereafter. Any additional pile in the approved remedial measures shall be
carried out before pilecap excavation.

10.1.18. The excavation to pilecap level is carried out. Once the excavation is completed cut off the
piles at cut off level. The pile point as built survey at cut off level is taken by the piling
subcontractor’s surveyor. Any deviation from specification shall be recorded and remedial
measures (proposal) submitted together with the pile point as built survey at cut off level
endorsed by piling subcontractor’s Licensed Surveyor.

10.2 Driving of Piles

10.2.1 The joints of both upper and lower pile segment shall be cleaned using wire
brush.

10.2.2 The extension pile is then pitched up and placed on top of the initial pile segment. The pile
extension shall be truly concentric and in alignment with the driven pile.

10.2.3 But welding is then performed using electrode of type 6013 and gauge 8 (with the
appropriate welding machine amperage of around 100 – 120A ) along the whole perimeter
of jointing plates. The thickness of the welding should not be less then the thickness of the
plates.

10.2.4 Upon completion of welding, the weld shall be chipped to remove all slag.

10.2.5 A thin iron oxide priming coat shall be applied to provide satisfactory bond between the
steel and coating.

10.5 Cutting off Pile Heads

10.3.1 On completion of the pilecap excavation, the pile is cut off using a hand-held hammer
(8ibs). The pile reinforcing bars shall be expose to a level above the cut-off level as
specified in the construction drawings.

10.3.2 Care shall be taken to avoid excessive cutting-off pile heads by using lighter hammer (3lbs)
to trim pile heads to required level with flat rough surface.

10.3.3 All the cut-off pile heads shall be removed from pile caps and cart away from site.

10.5 As – Built Survey Drawings at Cut-off

3.1 The as built survey drawings endorsed by a Licensed Surveyor shall be submitted within 1 week
from cutting off piles at cut off level.

10.5 Maintained Load Test for Single Pile Test.

10.5.1 Piling subcontractor to submit Load Test method statement for review and checking to the
main contractor. This method statement is subsequently submitted by the main contractor
for official approval from SO / Civil and Structural Consultant.

Modified Hiley’s Set Formula

The following Hiley’s formula has to be referenced while pile driving is in progress. All
units applied in this formula are in S.I. Units.

When + W+ P
Wm = 1+a1CN

W = Weight of hammer (kN)

H = effective drop height of hammer (mm)

P = weight of helmet dolly & stationary parts of hammer plus weight of pile (kN)

N = number of blows for final length of penetration ( per mm)

C = temporary elastic compression factor

1
a1c = -- a3 ( c1+ c2 + c3 )
2

c1 (for pile) 0.44pl, l = length of pile in metres

c2 ( for helmet & dolly ) 0.56p for helmet & packing

0.11p without helmet

c3 ( for ground ) 0.22p ( for gravel )

0.44p ( for clay )
1.1 p ( for peat )

a1 = 25.4
Table 193, Reynolds handbook – 10th Edition
a3 = 64.8

p = driving pressure (kN/mm2) = Wm / area of pile

e = efficiency of blow ( Table 194, Reynolds Handbook – 9th Edition )
