1. SCOPE
This document describes the operating procedures for the Hand Held Download Unit (HHDLU), PN 964-0446. The
HHDLU is intended for use as Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for AlliedSignal’s Solid State Flight Data Recorder
(SSFDR), PN 980-4700, Solid State Universal Flight Data Recorder (SSUFDR), PN 980-4120, and Advanced Series
of Solid State Flight Data Recorder (ARFDR), PN 980-4710.

1.1 Identification and Description

The Flight Data Recorder (FDR -- either an SSFDR, SSUFDR or ARFDR) is an airborne unit that records aircraft
ARINC 573/717 biphase data. The FDR stores specific flight critical data in crash protected memory for subsequent
retrieval and analysis.
The Hand Held Download Unit (HHDLU) is a ground based tool that provides the means to retrieve the stored data
from the FDR. The HHDLU also provides the ability to monitor the aircraft data in real time. The data may be
displayed in binary, octal, decimal, or hexadecimal formats. The HHDLU is equipped with removable media that may
be removed from the HHDLU and analyzed using an Acceptance Test Unit. The small size and durability of the
removable media allows it to be shipped to a facility equipped with an Acceptance Test Unit via the Postal Service.
The Acceptance Test Unit (PN 964-0434) is a personal computer equipped with custom software that provides the
means to analyze the downloaded flight data for maintenance purposes as well as test the SSFDR/SSUFDR. The
ATU is also used to format the PCMCIA media if required (refer to 012-0654)
Figure 1 illustrates the connection and use of the HHDLU within the Flight Data Recorder System.

3. HHDLU OPERATION
NOTE: The HHDLU is delivered with an instruction card (See Figure 2 below) that provides the minimum number of
steps to operate the HHDLU. This Card should be retained with the HHDLU at all times.
The HHDLU is connected to the FDR as shown in Figure 1.
Since the HHDLU derives its power from the FDR, the FDR power must be on for the HHDLU to
operate. However, insure that no power is applied to the Flight Recorder before connecting
the HHDLU. Once the HHDLU is connected to the Flight Recorder, apply power to the Flight
Recorder.
The HHDLU power-up procedure will vary according to mod status and power source. For HHDLU’s without Mod 2
the procedure is as follows:
For 115VAC operation, press the red power push button (located by the HHDLU's RS-422 port) to apply power to the
HHDLU. For 28VDC operation, power is applied to the HHDLU immediately upon application of power to the Flight
Recorder.
For HHDLU’s with Mod 2 the procedure is as follows:
For 115VAC or 28VDC operation, press the power push button (located by the HHDLU's RS-422 port) to apply power

3.1 Initialization

ASF-2121/R3 CAGE CODE: 97896 SCALE: NONE SIZE: A DWG NO. 998-1743-600 REV: B SHEET 7
The HHDLU initializes when power is first applied. During this initialization the unit performs a memory test.
The HHDLU will take approximately 30 seconds to initialize. During this period, the display
will be inactive.
When the removable media is inserted, there will be an additional delay while the removable media performs its own
initialization. When the initialization is completed, the HHDLU Main Menu will be displayed.
A complete test of the HHDLU hardware may be accomplished by performing the HHDLU ATP
(P/N 964-0446-701). This test requires the use of a wrap-around test cable (P/N 704-2555-001)
and a removable media with the ATP software installed. The ATP software (P/N 998-1778-501),
available on diskette and the test cable are available from AlliedSignal.

3.2 Main Menu

The Main Menu options depend on the status of the removable media at the time of initialization. Three possibilities
exist:
No removable media present -- this would be suitable for DSDU use only.
Removable media present -- this is the most common configuration, suitable for download and/or DSDU use.
Removable media, with application software, present -- application software has been placed on the removable
media. The software, depending on its configuration, may be loaded into the HHDLU and operated or accessed
directly from the removable media. This would be used, for example, to update the HHDLU embedded
software or run a diagnostic program from the removable media.

3.2.1 No Removable media Present

If the removable media is not inserted, the Main Menu will be displayed as follows:

ALLIEDSIGNAL HHDLU
S/W P/N 998-1743-50X
DSDU

In this case, only the DSDU function may be used. Press the key below DSDU to initiate the data display functions of
the HHDLU.
To enable the download function, insert the removable media.

3.2.2 Removable media Present

If the removable media is inserted, but contains no application software, the Main Menu will be displayed as follows:

ALLIEDSIGNAL HHDLU
S/W P/N 998-1743-50X
DNLD DSDU

In this case, both the download and DSDU functions may be used by pressing the key below the desired function.

ASF-2121/R3 CAGE CODE: 97896 SCALE: NONE SIZE: A DWG NO. 998-1743-600 REV: B SHEET 8
3.2.3 Removable Media with Application Software Present
The HHDLU will automatically detect the presence of application software on the removable media. When such
software is present, the Main Menu will be displayed as follows:

APPLICATION PROGRAM
ON REMOVABLE MEDIA

RUN LOAD SKIP

Depending on the removable media software, either the RUN or LOAD label may be missing
from the display.
Pressing the SKIP key will prevent the application software from being loaded into the HHDLU. The embedded
HHDLU software will then execute, displaying the DNLD/DSDU Main Menu.
The RUN key, if available, will run the application software from the removable media without loading the software into
the HHDLU memory. The resultant menus will be dependent on the software being run.
The LOAD key, if available, will load the application software into the HHDLU memory, overwriting any resident
software. During the loading process, the following will be displayed:

LOADING APPLICATION

PLEASE WAIT

When the loading process is complete, the following will be displayed:

TRANSFER COMPLETE

PRESS ANY KEY

Pressing any of the keys will reboot the HHDLU.

Note that, if the application software removable media is left in the HHDLU during reboot, the
"APPLICATION PROGRAM ON REMOVABLE MEDIA" menu will be displayed again. Either
press the SKIP key at this point, or remove the removable media prior to rebooting the
HHDLU.

3.3 Downloading FDR Data

The HHDLU provides the following download functions:
Full FDR data extraction -- depending on the memory size of the FDR and removable media size, the
removable media will hold several full FDR downloads. Note: An HHDLU loaded with 998-1743-505/-506 or
higher is required to download 4X FDR’s.
Partial FDR data extraction -- the user may select anywhere from 0.1 to 27.2 hours of data to be
downloaded. The HHDLU will then save only the specified amount of the most recent data from the FDR.
This function will assume that the maximum data rate for the FDR memory size was used during recording.
As a result the actual hours downloaded may be 2 to 4 times more than requested. See 3.3.1.2 for additional
information.

ASF-2121/R3 CAGE CODE: 97896 SCALE: NONE SIZE: A DWG NO. 998-1743-600 REV: B SHEET 9
Automatic/Manual data file naming -- the HHDLU provides automatic data file naming, but also allows the
user to override this option and enter alternate file names.
Memory maintenance -- the HHDLU monitors the removable media capacity and, prior to data extraction,
prompts the user if there isn’t enough room to store the specified amount of flight data. The user is given the
option to delete data files from the removable media or insert another removable media.
A download will take anywhere from 6 to 18 minutes, depending on the FDR configuration (1X, 2X, or 4X).

3.3.1 The Download Menu

Pressing the DNLD key from the Main Menu will bring up the Download Menu:

DOWNLOAD MENU
FILE: DOWNLD01.DLU

GO TIME FILE EXIT

The Download Menu displays the keypad options, the proposed flight data file name, and the proposed amount of
data to be extracted from the FDR (expressed in hours).
The HHDLU defaults to 27.2 hours as the amount of FDR flight data to be extracted (a full download). This value may
be changed by pressing the TIME key, which causes the PARTIAL DOWNLOAD menu to be displayed. This menu
allows the user to select less than the maximum 27.2 hours.
The HHDLU defaults to DOWNLD01.DLU as the proposed data file name. If a file exists on the removable media with
this name, the HHDLU will increment the file name to DOWNLD02.DLU. If this file also exists on the removable
media, the HHDLU will continue incrementing the filename until it finds an unused file name. The displayed file name
may be changed by pressing the FILE key.
The default FILE: and TIME: values may be accepted, and the download started by pressing the GO key.
The download may be aborted by pressing the EXIT key.

3.3.1.1 File Name Selection Menu

From the Download Menu, pressing the FILE key will display the file name editing menu:

Under no circumstances may the removable media be removed during the download process!
The download may be aborted at this point by pressing the QUIT key. The user will be returned to the Download
Menu.
As the download proceeds, the REC BLKS and XFER BLKS fields will be updated. REC BLKS is the number of
blocks left to transfer to the removable media. XFER BLKS is the number of blocks left to transfer to the HHDLU from
the FDR. Each block (BLK) is 64Kb of FDR memory. The maximum BLK number will vary depending of FDR memory
size (i.e X1 = 143, 2X = 287, and 4X = 575)
After the download is complete, the user will be returned to the Main Menu.

3.3.2.1 Insufficient Disk Space Warning

If, after the GO key is pressed, the HHDLU determines that the specified download will require more memory than is
left on the removable media, the following message will be displayed:

After deleting the selected file, the HHDLU will recheck the available memory space:
If there is enough memory to store the download, the HHDLU will then begin the download process.
If there isn’t enough memory to store the download, the HHDLU will again display the "Disk Full" message,
and allow the user to delete another file.
It may be necessary to delete more than one file to make enough room for the data to be
downloaded. For example, several files containing partial downloads may need to be deleted
to gain the memory required to store one full download.

3.4 Displaying FDR Data

The HHDLU provides the following data display functions:
Automatic determination of data type and rate -- the HHDLU automatically determines the synchronization
word type (Hamilton Standard or Teledyne) of the FDR data, and whether the rate is 1X, 2X, or 4X (HHDLU

5. TROUBLESHOOTING

5.1 Error Messages

Message Functional Description/Action
Area
422 TRANSFER ERROR Download Tried three times to transfer a data packet from the FDR to
the HHDLU and failed. Check the status of the FDR. Check
the cable connecting the HHDLU to the FDR. If the FDR
checks out, perform an ATP on the HHDLU.
ABNORMAL TERMINATION Download • The FDR failed to respond to an Exit Download
command, or
• The download was aborted before completion.
Check the status of the FDR. Check the cable connecting
the HHDLU to the FDR. If the FDR checks out, perform an
ATP on the HHDLU.
CAN’T RUN LOAD.BAT System Unable to execute the LOAD batch file. Either the
LOAD.BAT or the COMMAND.COM file is defective.
Reload and/or rebuild all files on the removable media.
Perform an ATP on the HHDLU.
CAN’T RUN RUN.BAT System Unable to execute the RUN.BAT program. Either the
RUN.BAT or the COMMAND.COM file is defective. Reload
and/or rebuild all files on the removable media. Perform an
ATP on the HHDLU.
CANNOT OPEN FILE Download Could not open (for writing) the file to download to. Make
sure the removable media is not write-protected.
DISK ERROR Download From the DELETE FILE menu, unable to open the root
directory. Reformat or replace the removable media.
DISK ERROR Download While attempting a download, unable to get the amount of
free space on the disk. Reformat or replace the removable
media.
DISK FULL Download The space available on the disk is less than that required
for the download data. Delete one or more files from the
removable media or replace it with a disk that has more
space.
DOWNLOAD INIT FAIL Download A download could not be initiated. Check the status of the
FDR. Check the cable connecting the HHDLU to the FDR.
If the FDR checks out, perform an ATP on the HHDLU.
INITIALIZING MEDIA System The PCMCIA Media may not be formatted. Remove media
(stuck on) and cycle HHDLU power. Insert formatted media and
continue.
NOTE: The PCMCIA media may be formatted using the
ATU. Refer to 012-0654 for instructions.
INVALID MEDIA System More than 20 seconds have elapsed without the media
initialization process completing. The removable media is
possibly defective or a disk is being used that requires an
unusually long initialization time. Replace the disk with an
approved disk.
MEMORY FAILURE System The software was unable to allocate memory for the
receive packet buffer. This error should not occur in a
normally functioning HHDLU. Perform an ATP on the unit
to isolate hardware problems.
MODE CHANGE FAILED Download The FDR did not respond to a Set Mode 2 command.
Check the status of the FDR. Check the cable connecting
the HHDLU to the FDR. If the FDR checks out, perform an
ATP on the HHDLU.

NO SSFDR RESPONSE Download The FDR did not respond to a Reset command. Check the
status of the FDR. Check the cable connecting the HHDLU
to the FDR. If the FDR checks out, perform an ATP on the
HHDLU.
NO SSFDR RESPONSE DSDU The FDR did not respond to a
• Reset command, or
• Set Mode 1 command, or
• Data Frame Request command.
Check the status of the FDR. Check the cable connecting
the HHDLU to the FDR. If the FDR checks out, perform an
ATP on the HHDLU.
NONRECOVERABLE System, A disk (removable media) error occurred that the operating
ERROR Download system was not able to recover from. Make sure the media
is properly inserted and not write-protected. Note the
displayed values of the AX and DI registers and refer to
Section 5.1 for more information. Pressing any key will
reset the HHDLU.

5.1 Nonrecoverable Errors

Disk-related problems often result in the message "NONRECOVERABLE ERROR / PRESS ANY KEY", which
indicates that the operating system has detected an error involving the removable media from which it cannot recover.
The display will also show actual register information from the operating system indicating why the error occurred.
While the user is not expected to have to decipher this low-level information in normal use (pushing any key to reset
the HHDLU and starting over is the recommended response), the information is available for more extensive
troubleshooting should that be desired. The following tables define these register contents.
Register AH:
Bit Name Allowable Values
0 Operation type 0 = read; 1 = write
1-2 Error location 00 = DOS area; 01 = FAT, 10 = directory; 11 = data area
3 Fail response 0 = not allowed; 1 = allowed
4 Retry response 0 = not allowed; 1 = allowed
5 Ignore response 0 = not allowed; 1 = allowed
6 <not used>
7 Device type 0 = disk drive*; 1 = other device
* If bit 7 = 0, then register AL contains the number of the failing drive (0 = drive A).
Register DI (Low Byte)
