and a whole range of factors.
Miscalculations by Immigration New
Zealand can be seen in their decision to
cut down on their workforce costs. An
increase in efficiencies and consistency
was forecast with a business plan that was
projected to achieve $32 million benefit
over four years based on cutting down on
offices and processing centres. But with
a 4 percent saving in those costs now
predicted over four years, there is a $0
benefit. A programme that has cost heavily
and gone completely wrong.
The plan was to cut down from 25 sites
to 10 globally and continue their move
from paper to online applications. In a
bid to achieve this goal, offices, such as
Auckland central, Shanghai, Moscow,
Jakarta, Hong Kong, were closed last year
and Bangkok, Washington, Dubai and
Pretoria were downgraded to only deal
with local risk and verification work. This
year London and New Delhi were also
converted. Thankfully their decision to
close the Henderson branch in Auckland
was reversed and the closure of Manila
office also has been delayed.
Ninety percent of applications for an
essential skills work visa are taking three
months or longer to process - sparking
concern from Education New Zealand as
well as local business owners.
Restaurateurs and entrepreneurs Radhika
and Vick Arora of Kreem Café who own a
couple of cafes from the Kreem chain, and
said their businesses' need for immigrant
workers was "just becoming greater and
greater".
They said their company - and others in
the hospitality industry - were getting sick
of the delays. It is costing the New Zealand
economy damages in ways that are not
going to help sustain many businesses
and hospitality chains for a long period of
time.

Council seeks ban on private
Fireworks Sales
The Local Government New Zealand
Annual General Meeting voted to
join forces in calling for a ban on the
sale and private use of fireworks. The
vote adopted a remit presented by
Auckland Council by a majority of 64
percent.
Councillor Cathy Casey, who has
advanced the issue through Auckland
Council is thrilled at the decision.
“The bottom line is that fireworks
cause significant harm and distress
to people and animals and result in
unwanted fires, significant property
damage and unnecessary pressure
on our emergency services. The
adoption of this remit gives hope to
all who suffer as a result of careless or
malicious fireworks use.”
“There is a role for councils to provide
safe, inclusive public events. We
will still be able to enjoy displays of
fireworks at well managed events
which bring people together to
celebrate the diversity of Aotearoa.”

reflects what he has heard from the
public. “We, as a mixed rural-urban
district are particularly concerned
about the animal welfare issues
associated with the uncontrolled use
of fireworks.”
Councillor Casey says, “This vote is a
call from local body politicians from
across the country that the harm
caused by fireworks must stop. I am
looking forward to seeing central
government come to the party and
put a ban in place.”

regulated by the Hazardous
Substances and Noxious Organisms
Act. To make any changes will require
action by central government.

Turn of a new century for Mrs Martha Vir
Mrs Martha Vir had always anticipated receiving a
letter from the Queen. On 10 July 2019, her wish was
fulfilled. She did receive the congratulatory messages
from the Queen of England, Governor-General
of New Zealand, Prime Minister of New Zealand
and the Mayor of Auckland, as on 10th of July she
celebrated her 100th birthday.
Mrs Vir was born in 1919, into a farming family in
Varoka, Ba in Fiji Islands. She lived her childhood
and adolescent years in Rakiraki, Fiji. At the age
of 16, in April 1935 she married Mr Samuel Vir
and moved to her marital home in Navua and
subsequently relocated to Tavua, Fiji.
In 1944, Mr and Mrs Vir moved to Toorak, Suva,
then to Tamavua and finally settled in Lami before
migrating to Auckland, NZ in 2001 to be reunited
with her children. Sadly, she lost her husband six
months after moving to NZ, in March 2002. Mrs Vir

She lost her second eldest son, Daniel (aged 14) in
1954, her eldest son, Peter (aged 54) in 1993 and her
grandson Samson in 2000 before she left Fiji. Last
year, she lost her great-granddaughter.
HER VISITS TO INDIA
Mrs Vir has visited India six times, leading tour
groups. On her initial trip in 1959, she met the then
Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Throughout
her visits, she has met 45 Bollywood icons; Amitabh
Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Premnath,
Sashi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Nirupa Roy and Farida
Jalal to name a few.
HER SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
Mrs Vir is well versed in the Hindu and biblical
scriptures. She can recite passages from the
Bhagavat Gita and Ramayana. Raised in a staunch
Hindu background, she converted to Christianity
in 1947. She has not looked back since and has
dedicated herself whole-heartedly to Christian
doctrines. She strongly believes in the power of
prayer. Even to this day, her children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren in NZ and abroad ask her to
pray for them when sitting for exams, going for job
interviews or for anything else of significance. They
are assured her prayers will bring in positive results.
She starts her day by lighting a candle and uplifting
her entire family in prayer.
Whilst in Fiji she was a dedicated member of the
Methodist church in Toorak Suva. She was an active
member of the Ladies Fellowship Group and assisted
in the fund raising by making roti parcels, chutney
and cakes, (baked by her daughter-in-law, Gerda).

She worked behind the scenes without seeking
recognition. She humbled herself as God’s servant.
She used to gather all her children once a month to
clean the inside and outside the church. Likewise, in
Auckland she took pride in sweeping the outside of
the Lynnfield Community Church on late Saturday
afternoon in order to have God’s house presentable
for Sunday morning service. She was given the
honour to cut the Dudley Methodist Church 100th
anniversary cake on one of her visits to Fiji.
Despite her advancing years, frailty and medical
concerns she still insists on walking to her local
church for worship. Her devotion, commitment,
courage, diligence, determination and perseverance
amazes people both young and elderly.
SERVICE TO COMMUNITY
While living in Fiji she opened her doors to deserted
children, single mothers, and victims of domestic
violence. She acted as a mediator to couples
undergoing marital crisis and hence succeeded in
her attempts of reconciliation.
HER SECRET TO LONG LIFE
Throughout her life from babyhood to adulthood she
drank milk from only one cow, hence she believes
that is the only reason she has survived so long.
When she got married her father sent the same cow
with her to her marital home.
She is a surviving cancer patient.65 years ago she
was diagnosed with breast cancer and was operated
by a renowned surgeon in Fiji and with God’s grace
she has had no setbacks. Despite the many tragedies
in her life she is steadfast in her commitment to God.
She is a source of inspiration to many and continues
a wide selection of beautiful, soft and durable fabrics.

She prefers to be as independent as possible in her
own unit. She manages to do her own laundry and is
meticulous in housekeeping. She still loves to cook
under supervision. She is mentally intact and even
now can relate her childhood stories. One of her
favourite stories is riding on a horse and assembling
the cows in the cow shed. With a glint in her eye
she proudly narrates being in seated on her horse,
a sight which inevitably dictated the cows on what
to do. She was a joy to her parents and a pride of the
community.
HOBBIES
She loves flowers and looks forward to annual flower
shows in Ellerslie. She has magical green fingers
cause any plant she nurtures it is sure to blossom.
Cooking is another of her hobbies. She had always
taken pride in food preparation and whatever she
prepares she is able to feed so many people despite
the small quantity of food. Since she spends most
of her time indoors now, she delights herself by
watching Hindi serials, her favourite being JHANSI
KI RANI.As of late this serial has been irregular in its
screening which annoys her.
SUMMARY
Overall Mrs. Vir has accomplished a lot in life. Most
of her family and circle of friends are no longer
around to honour her 100th birthday but she is
thankful to God for her longevity. We at The Indian
News wish Mrs Marth Vir, a very wonderful 100th
year and good health and wish her another beautiful
inning in her life after completing the century.

Renowned Bangladeshi author Taslima
Nasreen has completed 25 years of living

1962, Nasreen was forced to leave her

Auckland property sales have hit a new
record low for the third time this year, but
first home buyers remain highly active in
the market. After announcing last month
that the LVRs will remain as they are,
the Reserve bank is hinting at further
reductions come November.
Here’s what you need to know:

lows, this according to a recent report
which revealed that the agency sold 786
residential properties in June, down 13%
on June last year and the lowest number
for the month of June since 2010.

market is still strong and remaining at
a stable plateaued level, and expected
things to change as summer approaches,
"While prices in June remained solid and
sales numbers were modest, there were a
number of underlying trends that suggest
greater activity was building than has

The report also revealed that first
time buyers are continuing to return
to the market with more interest from
this group than others, especially as
the market softens and becomes more
accessible. Thomson revealed that more
expensive properties are still performing
well as there is less competition in this
price bracket, “there is a shortage of
properties in the $800,000 to $1 million
price segment resulting in competition for
properties, vendors are more inclined to
meet the market and banks are showing
more interest in lending.”
The number of listings was also in
a decline, with the agency receiving
1012 new listings in June, down 16.4%
compared to June last year - the lowest for
the month of June in 11 years.

What is Guru Purnima?
Gu means darkness/ignorance and Ru
denotes the remover of that darkness/
ignorance. Therefore, Guru means who
removes our ultimate darkness/ignorance,
known as Maya (illusion), and who inspires
and guides us on to the path of God-realization

Significance of Purnima
Guru Purnima is observed as the auspicious
day on the Purnima day in the Hindu month
of Ashad (July-August). The right name for
this day is Vyasa Purnima. Vyasa was born,
completed the codification of the four Vedas
and completed the writing of the eighteen
Puranas on this day. Owing to the passage of
time Vyasa Purnima came to be called Guru
Purnima.
Purnima is the day when Moon reflects,
without any hindrance the maximum light
of Sun onto the world. Moon is the presiding
deity of the Manas (Mind) and Sun is the
presiding deity of the Atma (Soul). The mind
of man is compared to the Moon, for it is as
wayward as the Moon with its swing from
brightness to darkness; this day, the Mind
too has to be bright, effulgent and cool. As
Moon reflects the maximum light of Sun,
similarly, our Mind must reflect the Divine
characteristics of Soul. That day is Purnima
in the true sense of the term, when the mind
is filled with pure love. Let your mind shine
brilliantly like the moon on a full moon day.
This is possible only when you fill your mind
with love. If you become the embodiment of
love, you will become divine.
Significance of Guru Purnima

The above sloka (verse) states that a Guru
is verily Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the
sustainer), and Maheswara (the destroyer).
Guru means God. These are the different
facets of God, symbolized by the three Gunas
(attributes): Brahma is Rajas, Vishnu is Satva
and Siva is Tamas. The whole cosmos is
constituted by the three Gunas. The trinity
(Brahma, Vishnu & Maheswara) is present
in the form of the three Gunas within us.
This is the meaning of the three words Bhur,
Bhuvah, Svaha in the Gayatri Mantra. Bhur
means Bhu-loka (Earth), which is made up
of matter and so is the human body, can be
referred to as materialization. Bhuvah means

Sonu Nigam Concert; He came, He saw, He conquered

What a dazzling display of a talent par
excellence it was, in an equally put up
spectacular show that came to shores of
Auckland once again. A crowd of more than
two thousand music lovers, enjoyed every
moment of the presence of the living legend
and his electrifying performance on stage
at Logan Campbell Centre. Sonu Nigam,
gave yet another outstanding performance
in front of a packed house on Saturday 6th
July, in a completely sold out show. In his
own words, Sonu admitted that this was
the most divine show of his entire career.
He said he has performed in thousands of
shows, all over the world including in New
Zealand, but this was the best ever show
of his life where throughout the show, the
audience clapped, sang and danced along
with him and enjoyed every moment of the
show. Having performed in thousands of
shows Sonu has mastered the art of touching
nerves of his audience, which he did in this
show as well and he did it very well and won
over his fans and all music lovers with his
soulful melodious voice.
Kudos to the organisers of the show, SS
Telefilms, who deserve a pat on their back
for putting up yet another very successful
show in Auckland. The duo of father Shane
Sohal and his very devoted son Bobby left
no stone unturned to make the concert
a grand success. It was all the toiling and
hard work of these two, of many months
which yielded such a grand feat. They have
been flooded with congratulatory messages
after the concert from well-wishers, friends
and music lovers for the grand success of
the Sonu Nigam Concert. New Zealand’s
own Kishore Kumar and Radio Tarana RJ
Gopal Bhatia was also part of Mr Sohal’s
organising team. Earlier on Friday 5th July,
the entire SS Telefilm team and members
of media including The Indian News team
were at airport to welcome Sonu and his
family where a Haka was organised for their
welcome. Sonu was visibly very moved by
the welcome and told the team that it is first
time he has been welcomed with a Haka
performance and as a thanksgiving gesture
he sang a few lines of his own famous
Bollywood number for the Haka team.

As the 12th ICC Cricket World Cup hurls
towards its finals, it gives us a good
opportunity to look at teams that failed to
make it to the semi-finals. Six of the top
ten Cricket playing nations now have to
wait four more years till the 2023 edition,
to be played in India, to fulfil their dreams
of first reaching the knockout stages,
and then winning Cricket’s most coveted
trophy.
Pakistan –Champions in 1992, who
were also the beaten finalists when the
event was last held in England in 1999.
They were tied on points alongside New
Zealand on the leader board, but the
Kiwis pipped them to the semi-finals by
virtue of a better run rate. The Men in
Green started the event slow, and the
big loss to West Indies at Trent Bridge
severely dented their run rate. The team
copped a lot of flak from Cricket experts
and fans after a seventh straight loss
to India in a World Cup game. Most of
the criticism though was personal and
totally unwarranted. They made good
team selections in the latter half of
the event. Addition of 19 year old fast
bowler from Lahore Shaheen Afridi made
them a stronger team, which won their
last four games in the tournament. In
South African Mickey Arthur they have
a coach who keeps the interests of the
team first, and does not get embroiled
in controversies or Cricketing politics.
The team has clearly benefited from
playing in the Pakistan Premier League
(PSL). International Cricket returning to
Pakistan and opportunities to play in the
India Premier League (IPL) in the future
will help this very talented squad take the
next step up in International Cricket.
West Indies- Two-time World Cup
winners and the loosing finalists of the
1983 edition, this team again flattered
to deceive at the event. An excellent win
in the opening game against Pakistan
lifted hopes of not only fans of Calypso
Cricket, but also lovers of the sport,

disappointing. Andre Russell’s injury was
a big blow for a team that was showing
signs of regaining some of their old
lost glory. In Jason Holder they have a
Captain that is well respected, and the
likes of Sheldon Cotterel and all-rounder

forward, especially now that 40 year old
Chris Gayle is close to calling time on his
international career.
Bangladesh-They played their first
World Cup in England in 1999. Their
sixth appearance at Cricket’s marquee
event had Bangladesh’s tournament
ending in another ‘what if ’ campaign.

the tournament. In Rehmat Shah and
Ikram Alikhil they have two solid top
order batsmen to complement their
talented spinners. A replacement though
will have to be found for Coach Phil
Simmons, whose tenure with the team
ended with Afghanistan’s exit from the
World Cup.
On July 14th when Lords hosts its fifth
World Cup final, Cricket fans the world
over will be hoping that their favourite
team wins the biggest trophy in the
gentlemen’s game. Get ready for an

India’s Cricket World Cup semi-final clash
with New Zealand will head into a second
day after rain forced play to be abandoned
without a result at Old Trafford on
Tuesday. The players left the field with
New Zealand on 211/5 off 46.1 overs, and
India yet to bat, as the heavens opened
around 2pm BST. The teams were unable
to return as persistent rain fell throughout
the afternoon in Manchester. Play will
resume at 10:30am BST on Wednesday.
The situation bore echoes of the two sides’
scheduled group stage meeting at Trent
Bridge last month, which was washed out
without a ball being bowled. However,
unlike during the group stage, semi-
final and final clashes at this summer’s
tournament have designated reserve days,
meaning the teams will return tomorrow
in the hope of producing a result.

wins gold in World
University Games
Sprinter Dutee Chand won the 100m
gold medal on Tuesday (local time) in
the ongoing World University Games in
Napoli. Chand won the gold medal in just
11.32 seconds. She also holds the 100m
national record with 11.24 seconds.
