Overview
The main idea of the linking created between the group’s idea is that each of us has a
main character that is in a coma. My individual story addresses how the victim got in this
predicament and details important parts of the character’s life that contribute to the coma. The
story begins with a third-person narrator, who is the therapist of the main character. The therapist
will be implied within the story but will be utilized as a tool of describing the main character and
carrying the reader through the main character’s life. The theme of my comic will take a
psychological approach and address topics such as trauma, dissociation and personality
disorders, but do so in a way that is not entirely serious. There will some comic relief to the story
in order to make a difficult topic become slightly easier to confront. It should be made clear that
there is no intention for mockery within the story. The educational aspect will include various
aspects of a psychological condition called dissociative identity disorder. This will cover
symptoms and general knowledge of the topics as well as treatment and prognosis. The story
forms around the main character having multiple personalities and how that affects other
characters involved within the main character’s life. The personalities are viewed by all as a
burden, and eventually become problematic, causing for the main character to spiral out of
control and meet his current predicament of being comatose. The story itself was inspired by
interesting stories told by my roommate, who is currently in an abnormal psychology class.
Characters
The main character is named Brody. He is an apparently normal-looking man, although
he is troubled socially and tends to be awkward. He is twenty-nine years old and is diagnosed as
having dissociative identity disorder. Brody has been troubled, which was after he had been
abused throughout childhood. He, in turn, generated alternate personalities to help him cope with
the experience. Since Brody had such a tumultuous foundation of trauma in his life, it is often
hard for him to cope with issues that may not appear as traumatic to a mentally healthy
individual. An experience such as seeing his girlfriend with another man causes for him to keep
generating alter personalities while also referring back to others. In total, Brody has 15
personalities but is constantly plagued with three of his strongest personalities (Dogg
Wellington, Lollipop the clown and Ralph.
Amerie is Brody’s girlfriend in the story. She is with him in a long-term relationship in
which she is not entirely happy due to Brody’s multiple personalities. She is often met with
discontent as she experiences Brody’s various personalities but does not entirely understand what
is going on and therefore, is left in the dark with nobody to turn to. She is there to witness the
symptoms of his illness but acts naïve, brushing off his illness and him being “silly.” She is
partially problematic to Brody’s well-being in the sense that she is unfaithful to him and causes
him emotional turmoil.
Jodie is Brody’s aunt. She was his caretaker during his teenage years and remains one of
Brody’s only close family members. Like Amerie, she is also a character who experiences
Brody’s personalities but is opposite from Amerie in the sense that she knows something is
wrong and there needs to be a resolution.
The therapist is not only the narrator but also acts as an implied character that is pictured
in the first panel and is not present in the rest. The therapist has been seeing Brody for a number
of years but has not been successful in merging Brody’s multiple personalities into one due to the
fact that Brody has a hard time staying committed to his treatment plan and disregards
motivation toward becoming healthy.
Complication
Throughout the story, Brody’s multiple personalities are constantly a problem. They
cause for him to anger and hurt others emotionally such as his friends, aunt and girlfriend. They
come about at socially awkward times and cause for him to be disconnected from most people
because they consider him to be odd. The main complication of the story is when Brody forms an
alter personality named Ralph that is a junkie who lives on the streets. This is a dominant
personality that causes for him to spend a lot of time doing drugs, which is not something that he
had done in the past. This is an important point of the story because it is the drug abuse that
ultimately causes for his downfall. After a particularly rough night, he overdoses and ends up in
Mercy Hospital in a coma.
