Jesus understood the mission of
God to be a mission for
the sake of others, the
outsiders, those margin-
alized and who do not
belong. When Jesus
wanted to highlight his
mission, he chose the
text from Isaiah.
Therefore, as Jesus’ fol-
lowers, it would seem
that the Isaiah text
could point us in the
right direction regard-
ing the mission of God.
The mission, based on
this text, begins with God’s em-
powerment: the Spirit of the Lord
is on us.
However, the presence of the
Spirit is not primarily to fill the
spiritual emptiness within us, but
to send us to bless others,
namely, the poor, prisoners, the
blind, and the oppressed. To
these we announce that now is
the year of the Lord’s favor. We
are faithful to the mission of God
when we do this.
Inhabitants of God’s Kingdom
will be marked by love that
flows across all lines. “love your
neighbour and your enemy.”
Christians are non-tribal under-
standing that “the blessed gos-
pel is for all!”
Christians are clearly seen by in
the world by our love for one an-
other, but how much more so is
the love of God seen in that our
love for one another is stretched
beyond the boundaries of a church
group.

THE FORGOTTEN WORKER

People around the world are famil-
iar with Mount Rushmore, the
South Dakota site where the heads
of former American presidents are
carved in gigantic scale on a cliff
wall. Yet, while millions know of
Mount Rushmore, relatively few
know the name Doane Robinson—
the South Dakota state historian
who conceived the idea of the
magnificent sculpture and man-
aged the project. The monument
is admired and appreciated, but he is the forgotten man be-
hind the masterpiece. His name is largely unrecognized or was
never even known by some.

Sometimes, in the service of the Master, we may feel that we

have been forgotten or are behind the scenes and not recog-
nized. Ministry can be a life of effort that often goes unappre-
ciated by the very people we are seeking to serve in Jesus’
name. The good news, however, is that, while people may not
know, God does. Hebrews 6:10 says, “For God is not unjust to
forget your work and labour of love which you have shown
toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints,
and do minister.”

What a promise! Our heavenly Father will never forget our

service to Him. That is infinitely more important than being
applauded by the crowds.
