Adam Steffey shows off new band, music at Down Home

Tri-Cities native and award-winning
mandolin player Adam Steffey won’t be
the only familiar face at the Down Home
this Saturday night.
He’ll appear alongside four other sea-
soned bluegrass musicians — Ron Stewart,
Keith Garrett, Harold Nixon and John R.
Bowman — who have merged from their
respected bluegrass projects to form a new
group called The Boxcars.
The idea spawned from Steffey and
Stewart, who most recently played togeth-
er in the Dan Tyminski Band. Knowing that
the project was going to be a short-term
one, Steffey said he and Stewart, who
played banjo for the Dan Tyminski Band,
decided to continue playing together once
Tyminski and Barry Bales reunited with
Allison Krauss and Union Station.
“I’ve known Ron for about 10 years,”
Steffey said in a recent phone interview.
“We started toying with the idea of starting
a group so we could continue to pick to-
gether, and we contacted some guys we
knew and were big fans of.”
Two of those people were Garrett and
Nixon of the successful bluegrass group
Blue Moon Rising. Garrett supplied lead
vocals and guitar, while Nixon played bass
for Blue Moon. Steffey and Stewart also got
in touch with Bowman, the bass player for
JD Crowe and The New South.

“I worked with Bowman during the
Allison Krauss days,” Steffey said. “In
fact, we have all worked together a lot
but not in this configuration.”
Not sure what to expect from this new
musical fusion, all five men gathered for a
jam session, with Bowman switching to fid-
dle.
“It’s new but it’s not,” Steffey said, “be-
cause we are all comfortable playing to-
gether. We got together to play and decided
this is something we want to pursue, and
we wanted everyone to tell their respective
groups.”
All that was left was to come up with a
name, which came down to availability
rather than creativity.
“We’d been messing with different
names, but it’s a tough thing,” Steffey said.
“In talking with Mike Drudge, our booking
manager, he’s like ‘Well, I’ve got people
who are interested but they need a name.
It’s crunch time now. You have got to come
up with something solid.’”
The group began checking into domain
names because they knew having a Web
site is mandatory these days. Once they
discovered that The Boxcars hadn’t been
taken, Steffey says they “snatched it up.”
As for the musical style of this new
group, The Boxcars are aiming to perform
a lot of original work by utilizing Garrett’s
songwriting skills.
“Most of the stuff we are eventually
going to do is original songs that haven’t
been beat to death,” Steffey said. “It’s not
by any means going to be Stanley Broth-
ers or traditional, but it will lean toward

that more than the newgrass sound.”
The Boxcars already have recorded
three songs, and are in the process of solid-
ifying a label, Steffey said. They have been
laying down tracks at Ricky Wasson’s stu-
dio in Clay City, Ky. Wasson plays guitar
and provides lead and harmony vocals for
JD Crowe and the New South.
“We have all done so much in Nashville,
and feel rushed, but not at Ricky’s,” Steffey
said. “We’ve all done recording there so it’s
comfortable. I think it helps you play bet-
ter when you relax.”
As for a release date, Steffey said he
hopes to have the first Boxcars album out
by late summer. In the meantime, the next
few months of shows will allow The Box-
cars to try out their new material, begin-
ning with the Down Home in Johnson City.
“We will test the songs we want to
record and see what directions they will
take up with folks,” Steffey said. “You’re
basically in people’s lap at the Down
Home. It’s a really neat place to play. It’s
pretty evident if [the music is] working or
not.”
The Boxcars’ show at the Down Home
starts at 9 p.m., Saturday. Tickets are $16.
This isn’t the only time The Boxcars will
be performing in the area. The guys are
scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m., March 6, at
the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $1 for chil-
dren ages 6 to 11. Children under six will
be admitted free.

Internationally acclaimed
recording artists The Dixie
Bee-Liners will highlight an
all-star lineup of performers com-
ing together this weekend for a
“Show of Support” benefit for Ri-
ta Forrester, whose life was unal-
terably affected by the loss of her
husband and her home to fire in
December of 2009.
Forrester is the director of the
Carter Family Fold in Hiltons,
Va., and the granddaughter of the
legendary A.P. and Sara Carter.
“The outpouring of support
from local musicians has been
great. Everyone has expressed a
desire to help and they also rec-
ognize that the Carters are in a
large part responsible for ce-
menting Bristol’s place in Ameri-
can musical history,” said Sound
Check Music’s Dave Williams,
one of the event’s organizers.
The benefit concert, which has
drawn a still growing list of per-
formers from far and near, will be
held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 21 at
the Paramount Center for the
Arts in downtown Bristol. All pro-
ceeds from the event will benefit
Forrester and the Carter Fold. A
donation of $10 is suggested.
Thanks to the support of local
artists and others whose items will
be presented, a silent auction of
donated art and memorabilia will
also be held in the Paramount’s
lobby during the show.
The Dixie Bee-Liners, featur-
ing Bristol’s own Rachel Renee
Johnson, will perform along with
The Brother Boys and a host of
other acts. The Dixie Bee-Liners
were co-founded by hus-
band-wife team Buddy Wood-
ward and Brandi Hart, and fea-
ture Johnson on fiddle and vo-
cals; Robin Davis on lead guitar
and mandolin; Jeremy Darrow on
double bass; and Casey Henry on
banjo. Woodward plays the man-
dolin, guitar, banjo, bass and
drums, while Hart sings and plays
rhythm guitar, fiddle and moun-
tain dulcimer. The group boasts a
long string of hits, including
“Down on the Crooked Road,”
which highlighted cultural icons
of the Mountain Empire, and was
named Bluegrass Artist of the
Year by the Roots Music Associa-
tion in 2008.
Ed Snodderly of Johnson City’s
Down Home will also perform.
Snodderly famously fiddled Baby
Face Nelson to his demise in “O’
Brother Where Art Thou.”
Other musicians slated to per-
form include local singer-song-
writers Annie Robinette and
Brandon Story, The Brother Boys,
Duty Free, The Matt Osborne
Band, Wolf Creek and the VW
Boys.
“Basically, it’s neighbors help-
ing neighbors,” said Robinette.
“We can’t erase the personal
tragedy Rita has suffered, but we
can offer her the support of
friends and neighbors and the
larger community of musicians
and fans as a way of helping her
through this difficult time. I’m
honored to be a part of this ef-
fort.”
