This is a perfect course for those wishing to move from a traditional landscape to a
Xeric one, for new homeowners, for do-it-yourselfers, for gardeners who want variety in
their landscape palette, and for anyone interested in landscape design.

The course covers the basics of landscape design: drawing a plan, improving the soil,
irrigation, selecting plants (trees, shrubs, flowering perennials), hardscapes, companion
plantings, and planting for habitat (course details attached). For more information, go

Workshop will be limited to the first 100 participants.

Draw preliminary garden plans (assisted by instructors and NPS members)
Tour Academy grounds; note landscape concepts; visit off-campus sites

Homework for the Week:


Tour sites with interesting hardscapes, see the winter “look” of gardens, view application of concepts our
instructors have discussed. These activities will be varied and assigned by our instructors to help
internalize some of the basic design concepts they have emphasized.
