Government Stakes Its
Future On Austerity Plan
TREASURY Chief George Osborne outlined the
sharpest cuts to public spending since World War
II October 2 – slashing benefits and cutting public
sector jobs with an austerity plan aimed at clear-
ing record debts that swelled during the global
financial crisis.
After the country spent billions bailing
out indebted banks, and suffered a squeeze
on tax revenue and an increase in welfare
bills, Osborne has staked the coalition
government’s future on tough economic
remedies.
Osborne confirmed there would be
£81bn in spending cuts through 2015,
which he claims are necessary along with
some tax increases to wipe out a spending
deficit of £109bn.
As many as half a million public sector
jobs will be lost, about £18bn axed from
welfare payments and the pension age
raised to 66 by 2020, earlier than previ-
ously planned.
Even the Queen will take a hit, asked to
trim the budget the government provides
for her staff by 14 percent.
Investigations Show 75 Percent Of Benefit Claimants Can Work
MINISTERS claim that three-quarters of
people seeking a new benefit were fit to

A total of 842,100 people applied for
the Employment and Support Allowance
(ESA) from October 2008 until February
this year, according to the Department for

in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament
with several dozen barrels of gunpowder.
Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a
traitor with his co-conspirators for plot-
ting against the government. Fawkes was
sentenced to death and the form of the
execution was one of the most horrendous
ever practised (hung ,drawn and quartered)
which reflected the serious nature of the
crime of treason.
The Tradition begins...
The following year in 1606 it became an
annual custom for the King and Parliament
to commission a sermon to commemorate
the event. Lancelot Andrewes delivered the
first of many Gunpowder Plot Sermons.

Armistice Day (also known as Remembrance Day) is on
November 11 and commemorates the armistice signed
between the Allies of World War I and Germany at
Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the
Western Front, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the
morning-the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month” of 1918.
After World War II, the holiday was recognized as a day of
tribute to veterans of both world wars. Beginning in 1954,
the United States designated November 11 as Veterans Day
to honor veterans of all US wars.

World Championship Calls
For Larger Conkers
IT’S the conker season in Britain, where
schoolboys across the nation thread the
fruit of the horse chestnut tree with a piece
of string and embark on a vicious battle
with fellow conkerers to batter and ulti-
mately smash to pieces opponent’s conker.
Unfortunately, a dry August has seen this
year’s crop provide only small conkers, as
the chestnuts dropped from the trees before
being full size and properly ripened. While
the smaller varieties are very common and
are easily found, the big tournaments require
conkers at least two inches in circumference.
The World Conker Championships held at
Oundle in Northamptonshire, last month,
was celebrating its 46th year, featuring 360
contestants from 17 different countries. It
usually assembles its competition conkers
from neighbourhood horse-chestnuts, but
this year sent out requests across the coun-
try looking for “good sized nuts.” Thankfully,
local hobbyists responded in kind, and Ray
Kellock and Wendy Bradford were crowned
2010 men and women’s world champions.
At the Roman Empire Conker Champi-
onships at Bardon Mill, Northumbria, big
conkers were in short supply too, but the
16 year old championships were saved by
outside donors sending large horse-chest
nuts through the post.
Poulton’s International Conkers Tourna-
ment near Cirencester in Gloucestershire,
are renown for their stringent rules regard-
ing entry. Conkers are checked for baking,
pickling and other nefarious illegal activities,
and officials drill holes and string the conkers
to deter any cheating. At the village hall this
summer, everyone was happy that nation-
wide requests for “good sized nuts,” saved
the day and the tournament.
Ancient Archway Destroyed

SOME five hundred years of history was
destroyed at Scone Palace in Scotland,
when a delivery driver misjudged the height
of his van and the ancient archway that
serves as the entrance to the property. The
red sandstone and castellated roofing arch,
that has witnessed Scottish Kings make their

coronations crumbled into a pile of rubble.
Suzanne Urquhart who runs the estate
through Mansfield properties said they were
totally “devastated,” while a recent visitor
concurred, “It’s completely destroyed.”
Augustinians monks built an abbey on the
site in 1114. It became the most important
Royal site in Scotland, where monarchs
were crowned. Robert the Bruce, received
his crown here in 1307, seated on the great
Stone of Scone that was later looted by the
English, and can now be seen in Westminster
Abbey. The old Abbey was demolished in the
early 1800s, and the Earls of Mansfield built
the magnificent palace that draws the tourists
today. Scone, is also the location where the
Douglas Fir was first introduced commer-
cially. The entranceway arch was the oldest
part of the present building. Historic Scotland
has sent experts to review the damage with
the expectation that it can be rebuilt.

Queen Launches The Queen
THE QUEEN launched Cunard Line’ s third ship, the £350m Queen Elizabeth last
month at a ceremony at Southampton.
The Line’ s managing director, Peter Shanks, said that he expects that it will run at 100
per cent occupancy in 2011, thanks to competitive pricing.
“One of the real reasons for growth in the
cruise industry is not just the quality of the
experience, it is the value for money,” he said.
Fares start at £799 for a five-day cruise.
The ship’s capacity for 2,092 guests
gives it revenues of £3.3m per cruise and
£86.4m on the 27 cruises which it will make
next year.
The new Queen Elizabeth is smaller than
her six-year old sister ship the Queen Mary 2;
it’s about 100ft shorter at 964.5ft, with room
for 552 fewer passengers – a total of 2,068
berths. And she doesn’t have the Queen
Mary 2’ s distinctive long bow, designed for
scything the Atlantic waves.
Yet in most other respects this generation
Queen Elizabeth – the second largest Cu-
narder ever built – will offer similar experience
to her sisters Mary and Victoria.

$14,700 at an auction earlier this year.

Princess Beatrice escaped unhurt when
her BMW car was involved in a crash last
month. The car is believed to be a write-off
after being trapped between a bus and a
coach near Hyde Park, west London.

PRINCE HARRY ‘CAPTURED’ IN
AFGHANISTAN
A TV documentary shown on Channel
4 is based on what would happen if Prince
Harry was taken prisoner while serving in
Afghanistan.
The 90-minute film, called The Taking of
Prince Harry, features contributions from
former hostages and intelligence experts. It
includes scenes showing the prince, played
by actor Sebastian Reid, being held behind
enemy lines while negotiations are carried
out to free him.
Harry, younger son of Prince Charles,
served in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.
His presence in the country remained a
secret for fears that he could become a
Taliban target.
He spent 10 weeks working as a forward
air controller until his cover was blown on
the Internet. He was flown home in February
2008 when the secret was leaked.
The actor playing the prince is shown
facing a mock execution at the hands of his
captors and being made to appear in Taliban
and al-Qaeda propaganda.
NEW TRAINS FOR EUROSTAR
Eurostar last month unveiled its new
200mph trains which will open up routes
across Europe and bring Paris closer to
London than Manchester and Liverpool.
The company is investing £700m in
10 e320 bullet trains and refurbishing its
16-year-old fleet.
The e320 trains will bring the journey time
from St Pancras International to the Gare
du Nord in Paris down from two hours 15
minutes to two hours. This compares with
the fastest times of two hours five minutes
to Manchester and two hours eight minutes
to Liverpool by Virgin Trains.
The German-built trains, capable of carry-
ing 900 passengers compared with 700 on
the present Eurostar, will come into service
in 2014.
Meanwhile Eurostar services between
London and Brussels were cancelled October
18-22 due to a strike in Belgium.
Eurostar moved passengers from London
to Lille, France, and change from there to a
bus service to Brussels.
DEBUT OF THE NEW LOOK SAVOY
After a three-year £220m refurbishment, the
Savoy Hotel opened its doors again last month.
The 121-year-old hotel has 168 rooms.
A day spent taking tea in the remodelled
Thames Foyer, cocktails and champagne in
the stunning Beaufort Bar, dinner in the River
Restaurant and a stay in a £2,500 sixth-floor
suite reveals a building restored to its former
glory and geared to the future.
The Savoy has always been technologi-
cally ahead of its time, but the emphasis now
is on the human side. You are greeted by
friendly faces (or, if you are staying in one
of the 62 suites, by a butler) rather than by
fingerprint check-ins.
On the whole, it’s a lighter, brighter Savoy,
and rumour has it that now that it is finally
finished, its owner, Saudi Prince Alwaleed,
will sell it. Only time will tell.
END OF THE RED BOXES
The days of the red telephone boxes are
numbered. Westminster Council wants to
close 18 call boxes because of fears that
they are being used by criminals and are
targets for vandals.
The council has written to British Telecom,
asking for the boxes to be shut down. English
Heritage has listed 340 boxes in London.
ICE RINK FOR LONDON EYE
The London Eye is to have an ice rink at
its base for the first time this Christmas. It
will be the largest addition to the growing
phenomenon of outdoor skating in the capital
each winter, following the success of rinks
at Somerset House and the Natural History
Museum.
The Eye’s owner, Merlin Entertainments
Group, has announced that visitors will
have “a unique opportunity to celebrate the
festive season, taking in the best views of
London.”
Tickets will allow skaters to enjoy a
45-minute spin around the ice at the foot of
the world’ s highest observation wheel on
the South Bank.
Ice skating will be available only as part
of packages combined with trips on the Eye.
The company says that after using the rink,
skaters can warm up with a half-hour ride
on the Eye while drinking mulled wine or
champagne.
The rink will be open from 10am to 9pm
daily from November 20 to January 5 and will
cost from £10.50 for adults.

A NEW BUS FROM BORIS
A prototype of the new Routemaster bus
commissioned by Mayor Boris Johnson was
unveiled in London last month.
It is made mainly of wood and plastic and
has no engine, no driver, no conductor and
not even many seats, but brought to life for
the first time the Mayor’ s £7.8m vision that
my soon be dubbed the “Boris Bus”.
The life-size replica was built by the North-
ern Ireland firm Wrightbus. The first bus will
take at least another year to be completed
and will unergo testing – possibly picking up
passengers in the capital – in about a year.
Six will then enter service in January 2012,
concentrating on central routes that call at
the busiest railway stations.

Jaguar Land Rover Agrees
Pay Raise – Shelves Closures
CARMAKER Jaguar Land Rover said
last month it has agreed to a five percent
pay rise for its workers and has shelved
plans to close one of its three factories
in England.
The company, now part of India’s Tata
Motors, also reported double-digit sales
increases and said it expects to hire 1,500
more workers next year at the Halewood
plant.

Bonfire Night Firefighter Strike Talks Break Down

Everyone Knows You Are Pretty
Good, But Are You Extraordinary?
WHETHER someone is pretty good, exception-
al, distinguished or extraordinary might sound
like a meaningless exercise in semantics
UNLESS one is applying for a working visa in
the US. One of the several employment autho-
rized visa categories is reserved for those of
“extraordinary ability”. This elite working visa
category goes by the name of O-1. A foreign
national is eligible for this category if their oc-
cupation is in the sciences, arts, education,
business or athletics and their “extraordinary
ability” has been demonstrated by sustained
national or international acclaim. “Extraor-
dinary ability” in occupations other than in
the arts, is defined as “a level of expertise
indicating that the person is one of the small
percentage who have risen to the very top of
the field of endeavor”. This, in turn has been
broken down to a list of eligibility criteria that an
applicant must clearly demonstrate eligibility
for either by submitting evidence of a major,
internationally recognized award (a Nobel prize
is actually given as an example…) or at least
three of the following criteria:
•Nationally or internationally recognized
award,
•Membership in an organization that
requires outstanding achievement
•Publish material about the applicant in
professional or major trade publications
•Judgment of the work of others
•Original scientific or scholarly work of
major significance
•Authorship of scholarly work
•Been employed in a critical or essential
capacity for a distinguished organization
•Has commanded or will command a high
salary in relation to others in the field
As can be seen, this is a relatively high
standard but not an unreachable one. This
visa category is quite subjective as compared
to most of the other rigid categories. It actually
provides an opportunity for one to get creative
and to persuasively argue. Having filed hun-
dreds and hundreds of these application, it can
be said that the USCIS is quite inconsistent
with regard to their adjudications. We are
regularly surprised by the ones that are quickly
approved and equally surprised at the ones that
are challenged for additional evidence or for
clarification of one point or another.
Occupations in the arts, actually get to
utilize a slightly lower standard with similar
but somewhat easier criteria to meet.
An added bonus of achieving O-1 nonim-
migrant status is that for occupations other
than those in the arts, an applicant can self
sponsor for a fast green card via a green card
category with virtually the identical criteria.
A very comprehensive dossier must be
assembled not only with compelling objective
evidence but with expert testimony vouching
for the claimed standing in the field of endeav-
or. The O-1 category is an underutilized visa
category. Many are unjustifiably intimidated
by the standard. Although the applicant clearly
must very good, many times “extraordinary”
to USCIS may actually mean just really good
to others.

TALKS AIMED at averting a strike by
London firefighters on Bonfire Night

POLICE BELIEVE that a London taxi
driver convicted of a string of attacks on
female passengers is linked to more than
100 cases of sexual assault.
Scotland Yard said last month that a
total of 102 women have said they were
victimized by 53-year-old John Worboys,
who was convicted of assaulting 12 of
his passengers in a highly publicized trial
last year.
Worboys drove one of London’s iconic
black cabs, the distinctive sedans that ferry
busy Londoners across the city. Worboys’
case attracted a lot of attention in part
because the cabs are advertised as one
of the capital’s safest forms of transport,
particularly for women. Black cab drivers
undergo rigorous testing and are subject to
criminal checks, and they’re often touted
as a trustworthy alternative to the unregu-
lated cab drivers who try to poach custom-

in the lottery, and inviting them to par-
take in a celebratory glass of champagne.
Secreted inside the drinks were powerful
sedatives, and those who joined him in
a drink often remembered little of what
happened next.
One victim said that what should have
been a 40-minute trip home took three
hours. Others were left with semen stains
on their clothes, and items or DNA from
some victims was found by police at
Worboys’ home.
Worboys denied the charges, but in
March of last year he was found guilty of
assaulting 12 women. Police say he may
have attacked at least 90 more victims,
but the nature of his crimes meant that

Carnage Footage Shown At London Bombings Inquest

DETONATED
The inquest at London’s Royal Courts
of Justice opened October 11 to look into
the circumstances surrounding the death of
52 commuters in the attacks. Four British
Muslim suicide bombers detonated devices
aboard three subway trains and a double-
decker bus, killing themselves and also
injuring hundreds.
The bomb that went off on the King’s
Cross train was the deadliest of the four at-
tacks because up to 1,500 passengers were
squeezed inside the train’s carriages, said
Hugo Keith, chief counsel to the inquest.
Twenty-six people died in the explosion.
A police video filmed later that day
after the train had been cleared of bod-
ies showed piles of abandoned personal
belongings and newspapers trampled by
fleeing passengers.
In another video shown, a Circle line
train carriage’s double doors were com-
pletely ripped off, the ceiling was partially
collapsed and handrails laid on the floor.

Man Builds 70mph
Mobility Scooter
A PLUMBER in Lincolnshire has built
a high-speed mobility scooter that can
travel at up to 70mph.
Colin Furze, 31, spent nearly three
months converting the machine which
has a powerful 125cc motorbike engine
hidden under the seat, five gears and
twin exhausts.
The petrol-powered super scooter,
which is British racing green, can almost
reach the national speed limit and keep
up with cars on the motorway.
It does 10mpg and is nearly nine times
faster than an average mobility scooter
which glides along at just 8mph.

and attracting younger readers.
The paper, called “i,” features
abridged versions of Independent

cost readers just 20 pence ($0.32),
compared to The Independent, which
costs £1.59.
Launched last month, the spin-off
is published and staffed by employees
of The Independent, which is owned by
Russian tycoon Alexander Lebedev.
The Independent was found in
1986. It has the smallest circulation
among all of Britain’s national pa-
pers. Sales of the paper have fallen

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAIN’S FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS
EILEEN Grimshaw’s never had much luck
with men and now she’s gone and fallen for
the new builder, Owen Armstrong. He’s a bad
’un, is Owen. As Eileen helps him out with his
building accounts, he’s getting his feet under
Liz McDonald’s table and the rest of his body
parts under her duvet. Eileen finds out what’s
going on behind her back and under her nose
when Sean spots Liz kissing Owen up the gin-
nel and he reveals the torrid tale to Eileen that
Owen’s servicing an old boiler and sorting out
her plumbing. Eileen decides to get revenge,
but how? She’s tempted to nick Owen’s petty
cash box but that’s not Eileen’s style. When
revenge comes, it’ll be well served cold.
Meanwhile, Gary Windass goes off to
fight for his country in Afghanistan. Anna and
Eddie give their son a last hearty meal of his
favourite food before he heads to the Rovers
for a heart-to-heart then spends the night with
Izzy. And then it’s ta-ra as he goes off to war.
As Anna and Eddie wave off Gary, they find
out they’ve been approved for adoption which
is good news for them but upsets Becky and
Steve when they find out, as the same adop-
tion panel turned them down flat.
In the Rovers, there’s more trouble with
Becky’s sister Kylie who nicks cash from
the till. Then Steve finds her with her fingers
in Becky’s handbag robbing more cash, and
threatens to tell Becky. Kylie reacts by flutter-
ing her eyelids and plumping up her cleavage
to get round Steve.
Anyway, at the medical centre, Gail’s not
convinced that her Nick’s girlfriend Natasha
is as pregnant as she says she is. So she
logs on to Natasha’s medical records, finds

Over at the Websters, Sally and Kevin
breathe a sigh of relief when Sophie and
Sian return. Mind you, while Sophie’s folks
are happy to see their daughter again, Sian’s
dad is less pleased that his daughter’s in love
with a girl: “You grubby cows!” he spits out
and storms back to Southport without his
daughter. When he returns he’s got Sian’s
mum in tow but it makes no difference, poor
Sian’s parents are dreadful and walk out after
shouting at Sally and Kev. Sally points out that
there’s no law against lesbianism, “I know
because I’ve googled it,” she says.
Over in the Kabin, Rita has a few tears
when she finds out that her credit card’s been
cloned and used by someone she doesn’t
know. “They’ve bought a telly and a barbeque
and …” she pauses “… something from an
adult shop!” Norris finds out his bank ac-
count’s been hacked too and puts the blame
on Tina and Graeme, forgetting his laptop has
been out of action and in for repair.
Elsewhere, Jack Duckworth moves back
in with Tyrone, Molly and the new baby.
He tells Tyrone over a pint in the Rovers
that there’s nowt wrong between him and
Connie, he’s just missing Tyrone and new
baby Jack, but there was something in the
way he told Tyrone that he wanted to spend
as much time as possible with them all, that
suggests there’s more to Jack’s move than
he’s letting on.

THIS month it’s lots of endings, including one
that is truly the end of an era...
In the aftermath of Lucas’s murders,
both Libby and Chelsea leave the Square,
while Denise’s sister Kim moves in... Jack
continues to recover and is now walking
with a cane... And a bad penny returns: Sam
Mitchell, who has been in jail for obstructing
justice for Den’s murder.
Sam calls for excited Minty (who’s always
been lovesick over her) to visit her in the prison
hospital. Turns out she only wants him to get
Ricky to see her. See, she’s nine months
pregnant and says it’s Ricky’s (though it might
also be Jack’s). When Ricky doesn’t want
her, she decides to give the baby (a boy she
names Richard) up for adoption, but Peggy
isn’t hearing of it and convinces her that she
should keep him to use him to get Ricky back
(funny, she never like Ricky when they were
married the first time). Sam is released and
returns to the Square but has no interest in
doing anything for her means-to-an-end baby.
And now Bianca and Ronnie want a DNA test to
prove which of their men got the slag pregnant.
The test is done and Sam tells everyone it’s
Ricky’s, even though it’s Jack’s. But Bianca
catches on and gets proof she lied and Ricky
tosses her out. Then Ronnie (unbeknownst to
Jack) pays her to leave the Square...
Stacy finally sees the light about Becca
after finding out that she was the one who
phoned the old bill and grassed up Bradley,
leading to his death. Realizing she has been
manipulated along, she throws her out, but
not before she has convinced Stacy to go off
her meds, leaving Stacy wanting to confess
everything to everyone. She is haunted by
Archie’s murder. She tells Dot that baby Lily
isn’t Bradley’s...
Phil’s habit has him hitting bottom in a filthy
crack den very quickly. But Peggy springs into
action and with the family, kidnaps him and
locks him in the front room upstairs at the
Vic to detox cold turkey...Elsewhere, Janine
is marrying Ryan at City Hall and then having
her reception in the Vic (where else?). While
the reception is going on, Stacy leaves Lily
upstairs for a nap, then comes downstairs
and confesses to Peggy that she’s the one
who really killed Archie. Peggy proceeds to
scream and toss her out. Upstairs, Phil keeps
screaming to be let out, and finally convinces
dim Billy to open the door just for some water,
at which point he runs down the stairs where
he has a confrontation with Peggy. During the
argument he tells her she loves the Vic more
than him and in anger she agrees. So he tells
her he’s going to take everything from her, like
she took Ben and Lou from him, and strikes
a match, sending the Vic up in flames. In the
intense Poseiden Adventure-type scenes that
follow, everyone eventually gets out, except for
Stacy and Lily who are trapped upstairs and
Phil, who runs back in to steal crack money
from the till (getting trapped under falling
debris). Mitchells run back in to save Phil, and
Ryan gets a ladder to save Stacy and Lily, after
which she tells him that he is Lily’s father. And
Mazel Tov to you too!...
As the Mitchell’s hide Phil from the Old
Bill investigating the fire, he and Peggy have
it out one more time in which he tells her
she has always smothered him. Defeated,
Peggy says she is leaving the Square. And
through the streets of Walford and off into
the sunset walks Peggy, (to the strains of a
new EastEnders theme penned especially for
her), stopping to glance up at the burnt out
shell of the Queen Vic. Duf, duf...
How sad to see Barbara Windsor leave
EastEnders! It is truly the end of an era. But
Peggy got out alive, so the door has been left
open for her return. Let’s hope!

OBE for his remark-
able career in music.
Nash, 68, who
found success with
the Hollies and then
Crosby, Stills and
Nash, was at Buck- Graham Nash
ingham Palace last month to receive the
OBE from the Queen.
The singer, who grew up in Salford (Gtr
Manchester) but has lived in Hawaii for
more than 30 years, got the award for ser-
vices to music and charitable activities.
Speaking after the ceremony he said it
was a highlight of his life and his parents
would have been very proud.
“Receiving this was very profound,”
he said.
“I’m from Salford, from a very poor
family and to have been on the journey I’ve
been on since I was 13 years old, when I
wanted to be a musician – (the OBE) it’s
a highlight of my life.
“This is my country and my Queen
gave me an honour – it’s a stunning ex-
perience.”
Olympic Marathon
To Be Run In
Central London
LONDON 2012 organizers have an-
nounced that the Olympic marathon will
start and finish in front of Buckingham
Palace and include three loops of central
London.
The race will start on The Mall with a
2.2-mile circuit of St James’ Park before
three eight-mile loops past landmarks
including St Paul’s Cathedral, the London
Eye and the Bank of England.
The race will only go as far east as the
Tower of London despite protests by resi-
dents and lawmakers against the decision
to move the route away from the Olympic
Stadium and the east of the city.
London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe
says a switch to avoid gridlocked streets
on what will be one of the busiest days
of the Olympics was “one of the hardest
decisions we have had to take.”

Itself But It Rhymes
SUDDENLY, life seems more difficult for the
Coalition Government.
The Spending Review which will appear
after this column goes to press will produce
huge political reverberations.
A great deal of “blame” for what has
happened to the nation’s finances has been
heaped upon workers in the civil service,
medicine and education. Pensions have
received close scrutiny, largely because with
advances in medicine people are surviving for
far much longer.
A teacher retiring 20 years ago, for ex-
ample, might expect to last 10 more years
before meeting his/her maker. Nowadays, it
is not unusual for a person to be drawing his
pension twice that length of time and if that is
a bad thing, well, matters can only get worse
as life expectancy gets even better.
One scheme the Government is looking
at, thanks to the work of Lord Hutton an
ex-Labour minister, who has been examin-
ing ways of spending less on the old folks’
pension, is to consider whole-life earnings
rather than end-of-career salaries.
REASONABLE
On the face of it, this is quite a reason-
able approach to saving money. But a little
closer examination reveals a bleaker future
for pensioners.
Take my case. I spent 35 years in the
classroom. I started in London in 1962
taking home no less than £48 a month.
That represented about £720 pa including
a London Weighting Allowance to help me
pay for digs in the capital city. Wind forward
35 years and I retire on an annual salary ap-
proaching £25,000.
You can do the sums for yourself from
now on. When I left teaching I received a
pension of 35/80 of my best salary. Had I
been pensioned off with the same fraction of
my annual career average salary, my current
pension would probably be about half that.
Over the years, my pay went up primarily
because I was rewarded for greater experi-
ence and extra responsibilities and, possibly
more importantly, because of inflation.
LUCKY
I always count myself lucky to have had
a working career that covered the second
half of the 20th century. We lived through the
inflation of the 1970s when oil prices went
spiralling upwards and house prices raced
out of control. But inflation was actually good
for us since our mortgages remained low
while our properties soared in value.
Successive governments placed a pre-
mium on home ownership giving us tax relief
on mortgage interest payments. This was a
godsend when interest rates were running
at getting on for 20 percent. But it sustained
property prices unrealistically high with the
result that today youngsters are priced out of
Police Force Publishes All Incidents To Twitter
FROM STOLEN cars to suspicious smells,
one of Britain’s biggest police forces is
tweeting every incident it deals with over
a 24 hour-period to prove a point.
The online Twitter campaign aims to
show the pressures that police are under
as British officials prepare for deep bud-
get cuts.
“The reality of police work is that al-
though crime is a big part of what we do,
we do much else besides,” Chief Constable
Peter Fahy of Manchester said in a message
posted to YouTube. “We’re very much the
agency of last resort, and a big part of our
workload is related to wider social problems
of alcohol, drugs, mental health and people
having problems with their relationships.”
The project, which ran from October 14
for 24 hours racked up more than 1,300
different incidents. Among the first tweets:
An alert about a stolen vehicle thought to
be headed for Manchester, the arrest of an
aggressive shoplifter, and a report that “a
man appears asleep at bus stop.”
Many tweets covered domestic inci-
dents, traffic accidents, stolen cars and
missing people. There were calls about

The average price
for a terraced house
is £186.704, and the average house price
comes in at a startling £230,562. Faced with
such astronomical numbers, you can read-
ily understand the dilemma in which young
people find themselves. By the way, I left
university with a debt of exactly £8.
WORSE
But Lord Browne’s mid-October report on
student loans has made things even worse
for the young. Now there will be no limit on
the size of student fees. This will mean that
it could take a graduate anything up to thirty
years to get out of debt.
Before the last election, each Lib Dem
candidate publicly signed a pledge to scrap
tuition fees but they now find themselves
raising them. Their justification is that the
country’s financial mess makes raising of
tuition fees unavoidable. Since it was always
clear that the next government would have
to slash public expenditure, it was surely
irresponsible (to put it mildly) for them ever
to have claimed they would protect tuition
fees from going up.
Of course, the pledge did them no harm
in electoral terms. But what was an ironclad
pledge almost signed in blood has morphed
into an unsustainable promise. Some promi-
nent MPs – Charles Kennedy and Menzies
Campbell among them – have announced
they will oppose any rise in the fees. The
rest – most significantly Nick Clegg and Vince
Cable – will vote for it and are desperately
seeking forms of words that will prevent their
opinion poll ratings, currently at 15 percent,
sliding even further downhill.
ADVISE
Back in 1921, the Liberal Prime Minister,
Lloyd George, governing in coalition with the
Conservative Party commissioned a busi-
nessman, Sir Eric Geddes, to advise on cuts
in government spending. The National Debt
was greater than the annual gross domestic
product. In the event, massive cuts were
imposed on defence, where manning levels
remained the same as during the Great War,
and on education, where a plan to raise the
school leaving age by two years to 16 fell
by the wayside.
90 years later there is still a debate as to
whether the Geddes Axe was beneficial or
not. Most historians feel that it set the scene

throughout the 1920s. The General Strike of
1926 was in part due to the resentment still
felt over the cuts four years earlier. Other
historians believe that it helped Britain escape
from the vicious recession of 1918-21. It
certainly paved the way for the election in
1924 of the country’s first Labour adminis-
tration whose rise led to the long decline of
the Liberal Party.
To Mark Twain is attributed the quotation,
“History never repeats itself but it rhymes”.
But where is the poetry for the Lib Dems in
all this? What will they say when the next
General Election comes round: ‘This is where
the coalition went wrong and that is why you
should vote for us not the Tories so that it
won’t happen again’?

Top Christmas Toys Wish List Includes Old ‘Faves’
BACK AMONG the top 12 toys on chil-
dren’s wish lists for Christmas is once
more Lego bricks.
Creativity and role play is at the heart of
the toy industry, with technology evolving
at lightning speed, according to the Toy
Retailers Association.
The TRA is publishing its annual of-
ficial prediction of Christmas bestsellers
and it is packed full of kiddie versions of
adult “must-haves”. Among them is the
electric guitar and a grooming kit, said to
allow children to emulate their parents,
friends and family as never before.
The TRA’s Gary Grant said: “This year,
the toy industry has combined innovation
and creativity to respond to the ever-
changing demands of children.

“The technological advancements used
in many of the toys we reviewed this year
were simply amazing, and demonstrate
how forward-thinking manufacturers are.
In what has been a challenging yet ex-
tremely positive year for the toy industry,
it is also refreshing to see the industry’s

everywhere.”

Royal Mail Privatisation
To Be Voted Upon
WHEN THE Postal Services Bill ap-
pears next in Parliament MPs will vote
on plans to privatise the Royal Mail.
Business Secretary Vince Cable has
said private buyers will

Mail, with at least 10
percent of shares going
to employees.
The Government has
also announced it will
take on the Royal Mail’s
multibillion-pound pen-
sion shortfall.
Labour is expected
to back the proposals,

tion Workers Union is opposing the
plans. General secretary Billy Hayes
said: “The Government has left many
questions unanswered and scrutiny of
their Bill shows they are making empty
promises while setting up to demolish
the mail through the back door.
“Their warm words about keeping
post offices open have no substance as
the Government has not confirmed any
funding to keep the network running
beyond next year.”
He added: “The Government is re-
fusing to explore business models other
than privatisation and leaving gaping

ing it into a mutual; owned and run on
behalf of subpostmastes, staff and local

in the UK. Each cadet has to write two papers
in advance about two of the locations they
will visit and learn enough to serve as a tour
guide for the group. We’re going down to help
give them a good send off and will await an

Even Ducks Are Apparently
Into Health Food
A COUNCIL warden told off a mum who
had taken her children to feed the ducks
last month – for not giving them whole-
meal bread.
The warden told Lisa Taplin, 34, that
her white bread slices were “unhealthy”
for the birds, reported The Sun.
Taplin had taken sons Luke, four, and
Dylan, two, to a local pond near her home
in Hailsham, East Sussex. But she was
shocked when the official said giving
ducks white bread was “like feeding kids
chips every day”. She said: “I was a bit
stunned. There were loads of ducks around
us and they looked quite hungry,”
“He said it would be better to bring
wholemeal, granary or bird seed. He
walked off, leaving me feeling guilty.”
Naturalist Chris Packham, who presents
BBC’s Autumn Watch, said bread was
“not the best thing” to feed the ducks.
But he added: “I wouldn’t stop anyone
from feeding birds. We send out the mes-
sage that wildlife needs our help all the
time so it seems a bit churlish to tell people
what food to use.”

Wisdom specialized in family friendly
slapstick comedy in the 1950s and 1960s.
He was known for his roles as a clumsy
underdog battling against adversity. He
also acted on Broadway in the 1960s, when
he was nominated for a Tony Award for his
work in the comedy Walking Happy.
His films included Trouble In Store in
1953 and The Night They Raided Minsky’s
in 1968, which he made in Hollywood.
His subsequent career was largely based
in television.
Sir Norman was known worldwide. He
was particularly beloved in Albania where
he was so revered that he was given the
freedom of the country’s capital, Tirana.

IN 1939 our dad, Ken Chapman, was at
University in London when the Second
World War broke out. He enlisted and
served in the British Army until 1946. Dad
was the Adjutant of the 4th Battalion of
the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry when

saw hard action across northern France,
the Low Countries, and Germany. They
participated in the liberation of Antwerp,
Belgium, and the area around the Bergen-

was interred at Pleasant Grove Cemetery
in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.
A sea of bronze flag holders and small
United States flags honored the US vet-
erans but after some research, we found
that there wasn’t one available for British
veterans. In 2008, we formed a small group
to design and produce an appropriate flag
holder: Kenneth and Michael, the sons of
Ken Chapman; Tim Hunt, President of
the British Officers’ Club in Boston; Ann
Stevenson, Episcopal Minister; and Martha
Chapman, art teacher and professional
artist. The British Flag Holder Company
was founded.
Over the space of a few months, the
group produced a number of designs and
debated the merits of each one. Finally, we
chose one based on the British Officer’s
Club logo, including the Crown and Lion
for the British Army, the fouled anchor
for the Royal Navy, the flying eagle for
the Royal Air Force and a representation
of the Garter – all surrounded by a laurel
wreath design. Mystic Valley Foundry in
Somerville, Massachusetts produced the
pattern and cast the flag holders in heavy
bronze in time for Remembrance Day,
2009. The group did a little finishing and
assembly before each one was ready to
ship with a Union Jack flag.
To date, a small number of flag holders
have been purchased to honor veterans in
Massachusetts and New York. Making
money was never the intent – the goal is to
provide a flag holder to honor the memory
and proud service of all British veterans.

Howard Jacobson Wins Booker Prize
BRITISH WRITER Howard Jacobson has won the prestigious Booker Prize with
his philosophical comedy The Finkler Question.
Jacobson has been on the long list twice for the £50,000 prize, but had not
been shortlisted until this year.
He beat five other writers including two-time winner Australian Peter Carey;
bookies’ favorite Briton Tom McCarthy; Andrea Levy, who also writes from
Britain; Irish-Canadian writer Emma Donoghue, and South Africa’s Damon
Galgut.
The Booker is open to writers from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth
of former British colonies. Last year’s winner, Hilary Mantel’s Tudor saga Wolf
Hall, became an international best-seller.

IF YOU read last month’s Great British Cars
column you will know that I didn’t reveal the
name of the car I was writing about so as to
keep you in suspense, as it were, although
I suspect many of you guessed what car I
was referring to.
I wrote that it was the best motor car that
the world had ever witnessed and was unlike-
ly ever to be surpassed. Strong claims, I know
but it’s true, the McLaren F1 is the pinnacle
of automotive accomplishment. In 1994, the
British car magazine AutoCar stated in a road
test regarding the F1, “The McLaren F1 is the
finest driving machine yet built for the public
road.” and that “The F1 will be remembered
as one of the great events in the history of
the car, and it may possibly be the fastest
production road car the world will ever see.”
The latter remark was an ambitious prediction
as all records will eventually be broken but to
this day only four cars have surpassed the F1
for top speed and these with the aid of super
or turbo-charging, at 240mph the McLaren
F1 still remains the fastest normally aspirated
road car in the world today.
The design was the brainchild of Gordon
Murray of McLaren Automotive, Woking, Sur-
rey and the idea of designing this masterpiece
came to him in 1988 whilst awaiting his flight
home from the Italian Grand Prix that year.
The race had been a bitter disappointment
to the McLaren Formula One team in which
Murray was technical director as they had
lost out to rivals Ferrari who finished first and
second. It was the twelfth race on the Formula
One calendar that year, but, having won the
previous 11 races McLaren were favorites
to win in Italy. Murray’s team went on to win
the remaining four races that year but the 100
percent record in Italy had evaded them.
Perhaps this inspired Gordon Murray to try
something different, and the McLaren F1 road
car was the result. It debuted in 1991 and
went on sale in 1992 and production ran until
1998 with a total 69 road cars and 37 track
versions being produced, the price tag was
$970,000, not cheap I agree but it has proved
a worthwhile investment for today these
cars fetch upwards of $2m. On October 29,
2008, an F1 road car (chassis number 065)
was sold at an RM Automobiles of London
auction for £2,530,000 ($4,100,000). This

was the car from the McLaren showroom on
Park Lane, London. With only 484 kilometers
on its odometer, this pristine example set a
world record for the highest price ever paid
for an F1 road car. Initially the F1 was never
intended for race track use but such was
the performance of these road cars racing
them became inevitable so came about the
Le Mans version, in fact, six of them and
all painted in Papaya Orange, in memory
and tribute to Bruce McLaren who’s racing
colors were Papaya Orange. Demand for race
versions was such that a further 31 were
produced with some of them being modified
back for street use by collectors. As for race
results, it is a long list of success, the pin-
nacle coming in 1995 at Le Mans with the
McLaren F1 taking first, third, fourth, fifth and
thirteenth places.
Having considerable knowledge in Formula
One race cars Gordon Murray used some of
the technology to produce the first complete
carbon fiber monocoque chassis structure for
a production road car. This gave the vehicle
an almost indestructible passenger compart-
ment with considerable weight savings over
more conventional materials. In fact, weight
saving is evident throughout the F1 design
resulting in only 2,341lbs for the complete
vehicle – compare this to today’s much
smaller Mini Cooper which weighs 2,546lbs.
The seating arrangement in the F1 is unique
in that it has a three seat configuration with
the driver’s seat situated in the middle of the
car with the passenger’s seats positioned at
each side and a little further aft so as to en-
able easy access for the driver to get to the
central position. With a single driver or with
two passengers this distributes the weight
evenly to keep the suspension geometry

Gull wing doors which open both outward and
up aid in access and egress for the driver and
passengers.
The V12 engine is mounted rear of the
driver, the compartment of which is lined
with gold foil so as to deflect engine heat
away from this carbon fiber compartment and
eliminate stresses from severe temperature
changes. A lot of the mechanical components
of the car were covered in last month’s
column so I won’t repeat them. The tyres,
however, I didn’t mention, they are unique,
specially designed by Michelin solely for this
car with the rear ones wider than the front.
“Burning rubber” is easy with these cars,
0-60mph on the road versions takes only
3.2 seconds.
Although production stopped in 1998,
McLaren still maintains an extensive support
and service network for the F1. There are
eight authorized service centers throughout

the world, and McLaren will on occasion fly
a specialized technician to the owner of the
car or the service centre. All of the technicians
have undergone dedicated training in service
of the McLaren F1. In cases where major
structural damage has occurred, the car can
be returned to McLaren directly for repair.

except for a couple of prototypes which were
intentionally destroyed by McLaren Automo-

TEN years ago when I started the Tea
Room and shop, a lot of customers
would ask if there was a social group for
Brits in the area (Sarasota, Florida) I put
up notices in the shop stating we would
have an evening to see if there was any
interest, on Friday October 13, 2000, and
almost 50 people turned up, they were
standing and sitting on the floor as the
capacity was really only for 30. Well I am
proud and pleased to say our group has
been going strong since then, and this
past weekend we had a super knees up
to celebrate. We average about 200 in
membership, and many great friendships
have formed through the Club. We have a
lot of super social events, and help support
new transplants from the UK.

November 5 is always a special date,
mainly for my Jack’s birthday, (or as
Ron says ‘Jack the Lad!’ and this year
we celebrate his 80th. However of course
most of us Brits know it as Guy Fawkes
day, and as my husband says “Only the
British would celebrate some guy who
wanted blow up the Houses of Parliament
for 200 plus years!!!”
Our Brit club is also having a get
together for Guy Fawkes, and although
we can’t have a bonfire or real fireworks,
we will have a Guy, sparklers, Baked
potatoes etc.
I have fond memories of Guy Fawkes
in England, and because it was usually a
cold night, we would warm up with tomato
soup, baked potatoes, and sometimes
bangers. As I got older we started adding
some plonk with rum in a warmed apple
juice (Apple juice with orange peel, cin-
namon stick and cloves)

Good Food magazine, that I have adapted
and made, which you might like to try for
your own November; a different type of
baked beans, which is worth the effort and
not difficult. They go well served together
or with baked potatoes. Hope you enjoy

Cheesy Rarebit Toasts:
1 sliced loaf of firm bread (I recently
discovered Wal-Mart’s English toast bread,
really good)
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
¼ cup Parmesan cheese
1 tsp English or Dijon mustard
3 spring onions chopped
1 beaten egg
Put bread slices on a tray under the oven
grill or toaster oven grill until golden brown
on one side. Mix the remaining ingredients,
and spread evenly on the untoasted side of
the bread. Grill again until the cheese is nice
and bubbly. 6-8- servings
Bonfire Night Casserole Bake:
1 Tbsp vegetable oil ( not olive)
1 finely chopped onion
6 slices bacon, cut up
1 Tbsp tomato paste
2x 15 oz cans chopped tomatoes
2 tsp Dijon or Colman’s mustard
1/4 tsp thyme
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2x 16oz cans cannellini beans,
drained and rinsed
2 lbs good bangers if you can get them
or plain pork sausages
Water Heat the 1 Tbsp oil in a large pan.
Add the onion, and bacon and sauté several
minutes until softened. Add the tomato
paste, stir in well over low heat. Add the
tomatoes, mustard, thyme, Worcestershire
sauce and one cup water; simmer for 15-
20 minutes. Add the beans, and simmer
about 20 minutes. Heat oven to 350 F.
Lightly spray a baking sheet with Pam
spray, and spread pricked (so they don’t
burst) bangers on it, bake until browned all
over; need to turn a couple of times. Put
beans mix in a large oven proof casserole,
and add the cooked sausages, spread
around and cook for 30-45 minutes more.

Britain Wins Big At Nobels,
But Scientists Glum
BRITAIN’S research community has just
notched two Nobels – but scientists here
aren’t in any mood to celebrate.
The country’s new coalition govern-
ment plans steep budget cuts to slash
its debt and tougher rules to control im-
migration. Researchers, including the
newly minted Nobel laureates, fear the
moves could cripple Britain’s scientific
community.
“The world of science absolutely relies
on the efficient exchange of ideas,” Kon-
stantin Novoselov, one of two UK-based
Russians who won the Nobel prize for
physics earlier last month, told The Associ-
ated Press October 7. “If the immigration
laws for scientists were made stricter ... I
wouldn’t be here today.”
Immigration was a hot button issue
in Britain’s recent election, and officials
have pledged to dramatically reduce the
number of people making their way into
the country. As an interim measure, the
government has capped the number of
migrants from outside the European Union
allowed into Britain at 24,100. Permanent
caps are expected next year.
Worldwide Raids In Probe Of Currency Printing Firm
BRITISH, Australian and Spanish po-
lice have carried out a series of raids as
part of an investigation into the allegedly
corrupt practices of one of the world’s
leading currency printing firms.
Britain’s Serious Fraud Office said
that officers in all three countries have
carried out a total of 16 searches and
that British police had made two arrests
as part of their probe into the workings

Visitors Spend £2.8bn On
Trips Involving Theatre
MORE THAN three million stage-struck
foreign tourists spent £2.8bn on trips
that included going to Britain’s theatres
last year, according to a new report from
VisitBritain.
Ten per cent of the 30 million overseas
travellers who came to the UK in 2009
went to a stage show – ranging from clas-
sic Shakespeare in London to experimental
fringe in Edinburgh, opera in Wales or a
glitzy London musical.
It reveals that London dominated the
theatre world with around 2.2 million
foreign tourists spending £1.9bn on trips
involving the capital’s theatres last year.
The South-East followed, attracting
235,000 foreign theatre goers. The East of
England, which features the Marina The-
atre in Lowestoft, was next with 133,000
overseas theatre goers.
Scotland, whose theatrical centres
include Glasgow’s Theatre Royal and
Edinburgh’s world famous Festival, at-
tracted 120,000. The North-West of Eng-
land, which includes Manchester’s Royal
Exchange Theatre, brought in 85,000.
Welsh theatre, which boasts Cardiff’s
Millennium Centre, attracted 30,000 and
Northern Ireland, which features Derry’s
Millenium Forum, 15,000.

Over Phone Problem
LAST YEAR residents of the Austrian
village of F***king complained of their
roadside signs being stolen on a regular
basis . . . usually by travelling Brits.
Today the same angry residents
in the village are being plagued by
drunken English-speaking telephone
pranksters.
Reports say callers are ringing at
all hours, demanding to know “Is that
F***ing”; before bursting into laughter
and then hanging up.
The problems began after tricksters
noticed residents of the village could be
found by typing the word ‘F***ing’ into
the online Austrian telephone book.

Statistics Reveal Britain’s ‘Mr And Mrs Average’
THE AVERAGE man in England is 5ft
9ins tall, according to the Office for Na-
tional Statistics (ONS). A picture of the
average man and woman in Britain today
has been painted with the release of figures
by the ONS.
The average British man is 38, will live
another 41 years and is educated at least
to A-levels.
The figures – released to mark last
month’s UN World Statistics Day – show
the average British woman is two years
older and will live to 82.
The ONS’s Jil Matheson said stats “form
the backbone of democratic debate”.
