Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) What are the various accessories required in linear measurements? Describe briefly.
(b) To what accuracy should the offset be measured if the angular error in laying out the direction
is 40 so that the maximum displacement of the point on the paper from one source of error may
be same as that from the other source.
[6+10]
2. A tape 100m long, 6.35mm wide, 0.5mm thick, was used to measure a line, the apparent length of
which was found to be 1986.96m. The tape was standardized under a pull of 66.22 N (6.75 kgf) but
after the line was measured it was found that the pull actually used during the measurement was 76.03
N (7.75 kgf). What was the true length of the line if the tape was standardized and used on the flat?
Take young’s modulus, E=1.96×105 N/mm2 (2×106 kgf/cm2 ). [16]
3. (a) How would you determine the missing entries in a level book?
(b) What are the various problems in levelling? How would you circumvent them?
[8+8]
4. (a) What is a prismoid? Derive the prismodial formula.
(b) What is Simpson’s rule? Derive an expression for it. [8+8]
5. (a) In order to determine the elevation of the top Q of a signal, observations were made from two
instrument stations A and B which are in line with the signal. The stations A and B are 80m
apart. The vertical angles of Q as observed at A and B were respectively 300 45’ and 160 10’.
The staff reading on the bench mark of elevation 178.450 was 2.850m when the instrument was
at A and 3.580m when the instrument was at B. Determine the elevations of the top and foot of
the signal if the height of the signal above its base is 5m?
(b) What are the advantages of traversing over triangulation? [16]
6. (a) Discuss the subtense bar method of tacheometric surveying. What are its advantages?
(b) Following readings were taken by a tacheometer from a station. The staff was kept vertical. The
value of constant of tacheometer is 100 and is fitted with anallactic lens. Find out the horizontal
distance from A to B and the reduced level of B: [16]
Station Staff Station Vertical angle Hair reading Remarks
A B.M -60 00’ 1.100, 1.153, 2.060 R.L of
B.M =976.0m
B +80 00’ 0.982, 1.085, 1.188

7. Discuss various methods of setting out a horizontal curve with a tape? [16]
8. (a) What are the functionalities of GIS?
(b) Write a detailed note on GPS. [8+8]
