1. (a) Explain the constructional features of salient pole machine with neat sketches. [12]
(b) Define pitch factor and distribution factor [4]
2. The flux distribution curve of a smooth core 50Hz generator is B = sin θ +0.2θ sin3 θ +0.2
sin5 θ +0.2sin7 θ wb/m2 where θ is the angle measured from neutral axis. The pole pitch is
35cm, the core length is 32cm and stator coil span is four - fifth of pole pitch. Find equation
for emf induced in one turn and its rms value.
3. Describe the EMF and MMF methods of determining the regulation of a non salient pole
alternator. Discuss the errors in both the methods.
4. (a) What are the conditions to be satisfied before a 3-phase alternator is synchronized to an
infinite bus-bar? [6]
(b) A 750KVA, 11KV, 4 pole, 3-Φ star connected alternator has % resistance and reactance
of 1 and 15 respectively. Calculate the synchronous power per mechanical degree of dis-
placement at
(i) No load (ii) Full load 0.8 pf lag.
Where, terminal voltage in each case is given to be 11KV. [10]
5. (a) A sub-station operating at full load of 1200 kVA supplies a load at 0.7 power factor
lagging. Calculate the permissible additional load at this power factor and the rating of
synchronous condenser to raise the substation power to 0.9 lagging.
(b) Derive the expression for the maximum power developed by a synchronous motor.
6. A manufacturing plant takes 350kW at a lagging power factor of 0.6. Calculate
(a) the rating of a synchronous motor which would deliver 140 kW and at the same time make
it possible for the plant to operate without overloading its 600 kVA supply transformer
(b) the resultant power factor of the plant
(c) the power factor of the synchronous motor.
7. Explain with neat diagrams the principle of operation of
(a) Shaded pole motor
(b) Capacitor start and run motor.
8. (a) Compare the performance characteristics of a.c. series motor when it is connected across
i. A.C. supply
ii. D.C. supply.
(b) Describe the construction and principle of operation of a ac series motor with a neat
diagram. Give its industrial applications.

1. (a) Explain the constructional details of round rotor machine with neat diagram[ 12]
(b) Explain the effect of harmonics on pitch and distribution factor. [4]

2. A 10 pole, 50 Hz, 600 rpm alternator has flux density distribution given by the following
expression B= Sin θ +0.4θ sin3 θ +0.2 sin5 θ wb/m2 . The alternator has 180 slots wound with
2 layer 3 turn coils having a span of 15 slots. The coils are connected in 600 groups. If the
armature diameter is 1.2 m and core length is 0.4 m determine.

(a) the expression for instantaneous emf/ cond.


(b) the expression for instantaneous emf/ coil.
(c) the rms phase & line voltages, if the machine is star connected.

3. (a) What is potier reactance? Now it is determined by potier triangle? How it is used to
determine regulation.
(b) Write a short note on slip test for determination of Xd and Xq .

4. (a) Discuss the effect of speed-load characteristics of the prime moves on the load sharing of
2 alternators connected in parallel.
(b) A 3MVA, 6 pole alternator runs at 1000rpm on 3.3KV bus bars, the synchronous reac-
tance is 25%. Calculate the synchronizing power and torque per mechanical degree of
displacement when the alternator is supplying full-load at 0.8pf lag.

5. (a) An industrial load of 4 MW is supplied at 11 kV, the power factor being 0.8 lagging. A
synchronous motor is required to meet an additional load of 1103.25 kW and at the same
time to raise the resultant power factor to 0.95 lagging. Determine the kVA capacity of
the motor and the power factor at which it must operate. The efficiency of motor is 80 %.
(b) Explain the various power stages of synchronous motor. What are the various losses taking
place in synchronous motor?

6. (a) Explain the construction of ‘excitation circle’ for a synchronous motor.


(b) Calculate the synchronous coefficient (in kW & Nm per mechanical degree) at full load for
a 1 MVA, 0.8 pf lagging, 6.6 kV, 8 pole, star connected generator of negligible resistance
& synchronous reactance of 0.8 pu.

7. Show that a single phase winding when excited by a single phase supply produce two equal and
opposite revolving fields.

8. (a) Explain the static characteristics of stepper motor.


(b) Explain the role of compound winding in the operation of AC series motor.

1. (a) Derive the emf equation of an alternator.


(b) A 3 - phase, 16 pole synchronous generator has a star connected winding with 144 slots and
10 conductors/ slot. The flux per pole is 0.04wb (sinusoidally distributed) and the speed
is 375 rpm. Find the frequency and phase and line induced emfs. The total turns/phase
may be assumed to be series connected.

2. (a) Explain the effect of harmonics on generated emf.


(b) Define the terms:
i. Leakage reactance.
ii. Synchronous reactance.
iii. Synchronous impedance.
Also give significance of it operation of an alternator.

3. (a) Describe slip test and explain how the reactance are calculated using it.
(b) Explain two reaction theory of a salient pole alternator with the help of phasor diagrams.

4. (a) What is synchronizing power of an alternator? Derive an expression for the synchronizing
power between the two alternators connected in parallel.
(b) Two 3-Φ star connected alternators supply a load of 3000KW at 0.8pf lagging and share
the load equally. The excitation of second machine is so adjusted that it supplies 150A
at a lagging pf. The synchronous impedance are 0.4 + j12 and 0.5 + j10Ω. Find current,
power factor, induced emf and load angle of each machine. The terminal voltage is 6.6KV.

5. (a) A 3-phase, synchronous motor observing 60 kW is connected in parallel with a factory


load of 240 kW having lagging pf of 0.8. If the combined load has a pf of 0.9 lagging, what
is the value of leading kVAR supplied by the motor & at what power factor it is working?
(b) Explain the ‘power factor v/s field current’ & ‘armature current v/s field current’ charac-
teristics of synchronous motor.

6. (a) Explain the construction of damper winding. Clearly show the location of damper winding.
(b) With neat diagram & explanation, show how damper winding prevents oscillations.

7. Explain the constructional features and principle operation of a single phase induction motor.

8. (a) Compare AC series motor & Universal motor.


(b) Compare variable reluctance stepper motor & permanent magnet stepper motor.

1. A 50Hz, 600 rpm salient pole synchronous generator has a sinusoidal flux density having a
maximum value of 1 tesla and area under one pole pitch is 0.1767m2 . The generator has 180
slots wound with 2 layer 3 turn coils. The coil span is 15 slots and the phase spread is 60
degrees. The armature diameter is 1.25m and core length is 0.45m. Find
(a) the peak value of emf per conductor
(b) peak value of emf per coil
(c) rms phase and line voltage if the machine is star connected.
2. (a) Explain the effect of power factor on armature reaction of an alternator [8]
(b) A 3 phase, star connected alternator supplies a load of 10MW at pf 0.8 lagging and at
11 kv (terminal voltage). Its resistance is 0.1 Ω/phase and synchronous reactance 0.66
Ω/phase. Calculate the line value of emf generated.
3. (a) With the help of a phasor diagram explain the MMF method of determining regulation of
an alternator for lagging pf.
(b) Explain the ASA modification of MMF method.
4. Two alternators are sharing a load of 2.5MW at 0.8 pf lagging. Machine1 has a no-load
frequency of 51.5Hz and a frequency drop of 1Hz/machine.
(a) At what frequency is the system operating and how much load is supplied by each machine?
(b) Load is increased by 1MW. Find the new frequency and load sharing.
(c) The governor set points of machine2 are increased by 0.5 Hz. Find the new frequency and
load sharing for the total load of 3.5 MW.
5. (a) An industrial plant has a load of 800 kW at power factor of 0.8 lagging. It is desired to
purchase a synchronous motor of sufficient capacity to deliver a load of 200 kW and also
serve to correct the overall plant power factor to 0.92. Assuming that the synchronous
motor has an efficiency of 92%, determine its kVA input rating and power factor at which
it will operate.
(b) Explain the load angle characteristics of a synchronous motor.
6. (a) Explain the various starting methods of synchronous motor.
(b) Explain the characteristics of synchronous induction motor.
7. Using double field revolving theory of single phase induction motor, give its torque Vs speed
characteristic. Why this motor does not have starting torque?
8. (a) Give the applications of various types of permanent magnet motors.
(b) Explain the working principle of permanent magnet motors.
