T
his June issue of the Removals & Storage always feels to me as if
it falls between two stools: The conference, with all its excitement
and valuable information is gone but it all happened too early
for me to report fully on it. Sadly, the clock is rarely our friend and this
issue had to be put to bed long before we all turned up in Bristol. I just
left a couple of holes to offer congratulations to Matt Purdie and Sons
for winning the DMOTY award and to Pickfords Business Moving for
winning CMOTY. Well done, and well done to all those finalists who
represent the moving industry at its best.
But there are still plenty of stories in here to keep you turning the pages.
My own recommendation: dwell a little on the page about Cargoshell.
I’d be really interested in your opinion. Is it the greatest thing to hit the
shipping industry since the invention of the container – or is it a folly that
will be forgotten by Christmas? I really don’t know, you tell me.
Another place to pause I suggest should be the ‘on the road’ interview
published by kind permission of Ria and Angus Russell of Britannia Lanes
of Somerset and Bristol. It is my opinion that most companies would
benefit from consulting their ‘on road’ staff more, tapping into that rich
seam of experience that heads off in the front of their vehicles every Going live - TomTom’s GO LIVE 1000 will be available in the summer

Bribery Bill was passed by
parliament – the first significant overhaul
of the country’s bribery laws for a century.
The biggest change for businesses under
the Bribery Act will be the new offence of
corporate failure to prevent bribery.
Companies will have to show they have
‘adequate processes’ in place to prevent
bribery, or face prosecution along with the
individuals responsible for the bribe.
The punishments which could be handed
down under the new act include companies
having to hand back all the profit made
from a contract won as a result of a bribe,
unlimited fines and individuals facing up
to ten years in jail.
The changes introduced by the Act, which
was somewhat diluted under the pressure
to complete business before the end of the
last parliament, are considerable. It extends
the definition of bribery beyond the
traditional relationships of agents and
principals, creating a new strict liability
corporate offence and a specific offence of

n 1956 Malcolm McLean, a trucker from
North Carolina, launched the first intermodal
shipping container which could be
transferred easily between lorries, trains and
ships. It revolutionised the transportation of
goods by abolishing the traditional system of
break bulk loading, helping to oil the wheels
of globalisation. Since its conception,
containerisation has failed to evolve, despite
environmental and economic changes. Now,
another newcomer to the shipping industry is
trying to implement this change with his
invention of collapsible shipping containers.
Rene Giesbers, a heating-systems engineer
from the Netherlands, has invented a collapsible
shipping container which, he hopes, will
replace McLean’s steel design. Cargoshell is a
fibreglass composite, folding container which
is light weight and can be erected by just one
person and a forklift truck. By replacing the
