Upon receipt of your registration confirmation, you should order
your course material immediately. It is the responsibility of the

Center for Distance Learning
All CDL courses are offered exclusively in online format. Online
instruction enhances education through interactive communications,
enriched content and technology-based learning. Lack of
participation or interrupted study for more than one week during
the term may seriously impair a student’s ability to succeed in an
online course. If you must contact CDL in an emergency situation,
call 800-847-3000, ext. 2300. If you have difficulty after an
unexpected interruption, your first step is always to contact the
course instructor within the course itself. If you are unable to
get into the course, contact us at CDLstudent@esc.edu. Contact
information for your instructor will be included within the course.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing
The RN to B.S. in Nursing program is an upper division bachelor’s
program with most course work offered online. The program
focuses on community health and includes an advanced clinical
placement. The degree program includes 40 advanced-level credits
in nursing. Admission is selective. The program in nursing is offered
only to current RNs and only through online study. For more

Student Responsibilities –
Distance Learning
Online learning is a convenient, flexible option for students with
busy lives and other commitments and obligations. However, International Distance Learning Program
online learning requires students to be self-motivated, disciplined
and responsible.
Your responsibilities as a distance learning student include:

Tuition and Payment Information

Tuition Costs at SUNY Empire State College

Tuition rates and fees are subject to change by action of the SUNY Board of Trustees.
Undergraduate Tuition:

Portfolio (Assessment) Fee $300.00 initial undergraduate matriculated enrollment (one time)
Covers the processing of degree plans and the review and recording of credits from transcripts, college-level
examinations, military training and experience, and other pre-evaluated credit based on assessments by the
American Council of Education, the University of the State of New York and SUNY Empire State College.
Individual Evaluation Fee $300.00 at second undergraduate matriculated enrollment
If the student is not planning to request individual prior learning assessment (PLA), the student’s mentor must request
a waiver by e-mailing Student Accounts.
* Out-of-state residents do not pay a tuition differential if attending the Center for Distance Learning (CDL). Center or unit students within

** Effective with the January 2010 term, the new tuition rate for active duty military, guard, reservists and veterans is $207 per credit

Payment Deadlines 6. Timely payments of scheduled installments is important.

The Payment Due Date for the January 2011 term is Dec. 30. To
avoid cancellation of your registration, enrollment charges must
be paid in full by the payment due date for the term. Acceptable
payment arrangements are approved financial aid showing as
pending on your Account Summary, or enrollment in the college’s
Time Payment Plan. Re-enrollment during the late registration
period is available only when spaces are still open in a course, you
will be charged a $30 late registration fee, and payment is due upon
registration. If your financial aid does not cover your balance in
full, you may use the Time Payment Plan for the balance.
Payment Methods
1. The preferred method of payment is electronically in MyESC at
www.esc.edu/MyESC and clicking on “My Records.” You may
use your MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express, check
or debit card to make an online payment.
2. You also may make a payment by phone using one of the above
credit/debit cards by calling the Student Information Center at
800-847-3000.
3. To make payment by mail, make your check or money order
out to SUNY Empire State College and send it along with the
bottom portion of your account statement to: SUNY Empire

Virtual Seminar on the History of Photography
This study will be based on Beaumont Newhall’s “The History
of Photography,” and explore topics and questions posed by the
students in the seminar in the first few weeks of the term. We will
look at the art history of photography as well as other histories,
particularly those approaches that have emerged since Newhall first
wrote on the subject.
As part of the seminar, students will participate in discussion, learn
to analyze specific photographs of their choice, explore the topics
and questions agreed on by the group, and develop and present a
final project to the group. All of the learning activities covered by
the seminar will be conducted online, in a group space in ANGEL
(the college’s learning management system).
This is a 4-credit, advanced-level study that fulfills the general
education requirement in The Arts. While there are no specific
New Learning Opportunity: Urban Environmental Studies Residency
This exciting three-day learning opportunity will be held at the
college’s Metropolitan Center, March 18 - 20, 2011. The residency
is linked to nine courses offered in the Spring 2011 term that
focus in interdisciplinary ways on urban environmental issues:
Environment and Justice; A Tale of Three Cities: Visions of the
City in U.S. History, Art and Culture; Urban Ecosystems; Urban
Child Development; New York City: Green Economy and Green
Jobs; Pollution Control and Prevention for New York City; Sea
Level Rising: Performing the Future City; New York City and the
Urban Environment; and Greening Gotham: Culture Change in
Fact and Fiction. Each of these courses satisfies one or more general
education requirement. and fees.
prerequisites, students will do better in the course if they have had
a previous art history or humanities study, are comfortable with the
ambiguities of interpretation, and have advanced level writing and
research skills.

Before the residency, students will complete assignments for their
course. At the residency, students will meet in small groups with
their instructor and in large groups discussing urban environmental
perspectives, and will attend presentations by faculty and guests.
Field trips in New York City are part of several of the courses.
After the residency, students will complete their course assignments
through the rest of the term.
Enrollment in one of the residency courses is required for
participation; attendance at all three residency days also is required.

The Project for Online Open Learning –
A Personal Learning Network at SUNY Empire State College
For the 2010 - 2011 academic year students are invited to participate
in a new online learning environment, the Project for Online Open
Learning (POOL). Think of the Project for Online Open Learning as
a combination of a blog, a Facebook page and a virtual lecture hall.
It is designed to capture the learning that goes on when intelligent
people passionately discuss topics of great personal interest.
In a traditional class or group study students are closely tied to
predetermined content, predetermined credits, prescheduled start
and end dates, and a limited number of peers. In the Project
for Online Open Learning, you are encouraged to follow your
learning wherever it leads, and you are encouraged to exchange
ideas, information, criticism and analysis with other students and
faculty in the community space. It is not a structured online course;
rather it is a social, networked, learning environment. If you have
an interest in a specific topic, rather than a specific course, then
the POOL might be perfect for you (especially the “Connected
Learning” group described below).
What is Different About the Project for
Online Open Learning?
Unlike traditional courses that may have predefined content and
assignments, the Project for Online Open Learning is built around
the idea that learning should not be restrained by anything other
than what you, working closely with your mentor, want to learn
about. In many cases it is not clear in advance exactly what will
interest a student about a particular course or topic. The POOL is
designed to evolve along with your interests and learning needs.
This is a new way of teaching and learning – this type of online
environment is new to the college and to higher education in
general – and it is likely that successful students will be intellectually
curious, motivated to learn, self-starters and willing to engage in a
learning community that is not simply a copy of traditional course
structures. The POOL is open and that means that you have to be
curious enough to ask questions and responsible enough to work
towards finding answers. Members of the Empire State College
faculty will lead projects and be available to guide you and your
peers through the learning process.
This is an easy environment to navigate. The “front page” of
the Project for Online Open Learning will show where current
conversations are active and it will point you to important academic
resources that are relevant to these conversations.
What Learning Projects are Planned?
Individual projects planned for the 2010 - 2011 academic year
include the following:
• Connected Learning. This group study will introduce students
to learning theories driven by the development of new media
and social networking tools. Each student will be expected to
take an active role in developing connected learning strategies
and practices that are applicable to their own studies, interests
and academic goals. Students also will be expected to identify
in the first week of the study specific topics that they plan to
investigate. This study is open to students from any disciplinary
background and is initially offered as a 2 credit, introductory
level foundation option. However, students will be given the
option to expand the credit level as specific learning interests
and opportunities arise. This study can be structured to count as
educational planning credits, though students must consult with
their primary mentors to see if educational planning credit is
appropriate. There will be no required textbooks at the outset of
this class, though students may be required to purchase a single
text as common learning interests. In any event, the textbook
costs, if there are any, will be held to under $30. (Potential
students wanting to learn more about the basics of the course
can do a Web search for “connectivism” to get a sense of what
we will be doing.) Students must register for Connected Learning
as an independent study. Please contact Frank Vander Valk for

• Comparative Political Theory. This will be a customizable version
of the course offered through the Center for Distance Learning.
Students and faculty will engage in the study of the political
theories of various intellectual traditions. For a description

• Modern Political Theory. This will be a customizable version of
the course offered through the Center for Distance Learning. For
a description of the basic version of the learning project please

term guide.
• Water. Water is life. Without it, nothing grows. Fresh water
is in jeopardy. What to do depends on who’s talking. It’s a
sacred trust, or a chemistry problem. It’s our patriotic right, or
a political pawn. It’s a human right, or “blue gold,” the latest
corporate frontier.
What about Credits?
Studies in the Project for Online Open Learning are designed to be
open-ended in terms of content, credits and time frames. You might
sign up for an independent study for 4 credits, or you might just
dive into the learning and decide that 6 credits worth of learning
suits you best. You might take small “chunks” of credits 2 at a time,
tailoring independent learning contracts along the way. You can
arrange for a certain number of credits before you begin, or you
can start participating and then work with your mentor and POOL
faculty to arrange for a number of credits that makes sense to you.
