of America, a young typographer from Starkey,
John Wesley Hyatt, followed Parkes’tracks.
Hyatt, after reading that Parkes had won the con-

union of camphor and parkesina.
The following year he patented it and founded
the first factory of the new artificial plastic sub-
stance. He called it Albany Dental Plate Company
and then it was called Celluloid Manufacturing
Company. Everything was revolutionized with the
advent of a new substance obtained directly by syn-

Ziegler, with Giulio Natta, discovered the stereo-specific synthesis of the
polypropylene using titanium-based catalysts. Ziegler and Natta obtained
the Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1963 for a substance which greatly en-
hanced the progress of plastic.

Polymerization
Plastic is the result of long chemical processes. They start from the raw materials (virgin nafta) that is
sent to the petrochemical system through an oil pipeline. The virgin nafta is transformed into a monomer
in a steam-cracking system. In this system the raw material is heated and invested by jets of vapours, so
as to crack its molecules. After this process a liquid or gaseous substance is obtained. This substance is
heated in the autoclaves of polymerization where temperatures (300 °C) and pressure (500-1000 kg/cm²)
are high. In this way the monomers form new, larger molecules: the polymers.
The polymer, coming out from the autoclaves, is already a synthetic resin that will be stirred with sev-
eral colouring and hardening substances. Subsequently it is transformed into spaghetti in order to obtain
grains.
