We welcome applications from
students across the university as
well as from qualified community
members! The application will be
available after January 1, 2011,
and is due by March 31.
Benefits
Those interested in receiving
Spanish department credits for
participation in A2LP may reg-
ister, for one semester only, in
SPAN 448, an internship course,
for 3 credits. This requires per-
mission from Dr. Maria Coolican,
who will determine your eligibility
for 400 level Spanish credit. You
may not take this course unless
you are working at the 300- or
400-level in the Spanish dept
Requirements
Because you will be teaching
Spanish, you must have an ad-
equate degree of proficiency in
the language to participate. You
will participate in a brief lan-
guage assessment process prior
to teaching. If this assessment
suggests that you need some
extra practice before beginning
to teach, we will let you know and
help you come up with a plan for
getting that practice. In general,
if you have taken or are planning
to take Spanish 275 or 276 by
Fall of 2011, your Spanish will
be fine for teaching 3rd and 4th
grader students.
As previously mentioned, the
A2LP program will run only Sep-
tember to April in 2011-2012. You
will not be required to teach dur-
ing U-M’s Fall or Spring Breaks,
and teaching will end a week
before exams begin each semes-
ter. Otherwise, you are required
to teach if the schools are in ses-
sion. If you are physically unable
to teach, you must find a sub-
stitute teacher from among your
classmates, just as professional
classroom teachers do. There

4th grade students in the district.
Classes are held in students’
regular classrooms, with class-
room teachers as mentors.
Research
As the A2LP affects every 3rd
and 4th grade child in the entire
district, the Partnership will soon
begin a study of this year’s ex-
perience from the perspective of
students with language-related
disabilities, including autism,
specific language impairment,
and auditory processing disor-
ders. We hope to include the
views of the students themselves,
their parents, teachers, speech-
language pathologists, and Ap-
prentice Teachers.

Overview
The Ann Arbor Languages Part-
nership offers an opportunity to
University of Michigan students
and Ann Arbor community mem-
bers to teach Spanish to 3rd and
4th graders in Ann Arbor Public
Schools.
The program is a course that
combines intensive preparation in
teaching Spanish at the elemen-
tary level with extensive clinical
placements that are supported
through collaboration with the
Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Languages A2LP was originally conceived in
2008 as part of AAPS’s Strate-
Partnership gic Plan to offer world language
instruction in elementary schools.
When U-M determined to partner
with AAPS, this element of the
Strategic Plan came to fruition.

Why I chose my design

My design for the Ann Arbor Languages Partnership (A2LP) consists of two figures with their
hands reaching toward each other and the name of the organization. The two figures represent an
adult, the teacher, and a child, the teachee. The A2LP aims for adults to partner with children to teach
the kids Spanish. The two figures are positioned next to each other reaching toward one another to
symbolize partnership and the want of partnership. I also used a person figure because the client liked
the ‘Save the Children’ logo. In that logo, there is a figure representative of a person or child. I titled the
figures to draw the eye toward the most important part, the name of the organziation. I positioned the
text next to the figures for readability.

I chose the colors green, orange and blue because the are similar to the colors on the webite
and are child-friendly. I made the first figure and ‘Languagues’ green because the adult in the
partnership is the person with the language knowledge. Also, the eye follows the green color from the
start of the figures to the center of the text. I made the second figure and ‘Partnership’ orange because
the child needs to form a partnership with the adult with language knowledge in order to learn. I made
‘Ann Arbor’ blue because it went well with the organge and green colors.

I chose the font because it felt like it could appeal to both adults and children. Also, it is readable.

I designed the website to look like a notebook sitting on a desk because the A2LP is about children
with notebooks who sit at desks in classrooms. I wanted to make the website feel like an extension
of the classroom.
