Chronic Art — by Casey Bruce

Recycling on a Higher Level

The idea for a roach-paper-mosaic was born about 15 years ago in a smoke-filled
living room some where near Pittsburgh. Cliff was searching for an idea for an art
school project, hence, the idea of Chronic Art was born.

How its really done.

In the begining the process moved slowly,
each roach paper was hand torn to fit size and
color requirements. After a few papers were se-
lected and manicured they would be bonded to
poster board, or rag board, using non-toxic glue.
The only fundamental change in his process came
years later when he decided to start using a Xacto
knife to aid in trimming the roach papers.

The studio.

During those first ten years, Cliff worked on

the mosaics sporadically while trying to manage
Angry Moon Tattoo, his shop in Pittsburgh. As he
polished his skills as an amazing tattoo artist and
illustrator, he was also honeing his roach paper-
ing skills. Out of the 15 mosaics in his collection,
most were created in the last eight years. The por-
traits are 8"x10" in size and take between 30 and
60 hours to finish. The most technically challeng-
ing of the portraits was Snoop. “The paisley pat-
tern in his collar was unbelievably difficult,” re-
calls Cliff. Addiction, the piece with 3 intertwin-
ing demon skulls, is the largest created to date at
15x22. That particular piece took Cliff well over
150 hours to complete. Many people ask if there
is an odor to his artwork. The answer is no. This
is due to fact that roach papers sit in containers
for extended periods of time while waiting to be
used, as well as the final product being coated in
a thin layer of glue.
Chronic Art in the making.

Creation was the first piece sold. It went to the lov-

ing home of seed cultivator, DJ Short during the NORML
convention in Berkeley, California, October, 2008. That
convention was the first showing of Chronic Art, to what
could be considered a national audience. In that audi-
ence were the tireless organizers of Seattle’s Hempfest.
They asked Cliff to create a collector’s edition poster for
Seattle Hempfest, 2009. He was extremely excited about
the opportunity and worked intensely on the project.

products, various molds can be found on cannabis. “Most of these
molds are not harmful to humans,” explains DeAngelo, “but some
— like aspergillus — can be dangerous, especially to patients with
compromised immune systems.”
Harborside has adopted the standards of the American
Herbal Products Association for acceptable mold content. Ninety-
five percent of the medicine that has been tested so far, has met
those standards. However, aspergillus or other potentially harm-
ful molds were detected in approximately 5% of the tests. In these
cases, Harborside removed the medicine from stock, and returned
it to the vendor who brought it. “Most of the time, when we re-
turn medicine to a vendor, they are glad to know they have a prob-
lem, and do everything they can to resolve it,” said Szmajda.
Potency testing has detected a broad range of THC and CBD levels:

One of the most intriguing results of the testing program is

the discovery that most flower varieties contain almost zero CBD.
Only one flower variety, Soma A+ showed significant levels of
CBD. At 4.2%, it is the only strain that tested at greater than 1%
CBD.
CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that researchers
believe has powerful therapeutic potential, including the ability
to halt or stop the growth of cancerous tumors. Anecdotal evi-
dence also suggests that higher CBD levels may mitigate the sense
of panic that some patients experience with high THC medicine.
Fortunately, testing has identified numerous concentrates and oils
with high CBD content on the Harborside menu.
The testing program has begun to affect patients’ buying
patterns. “Patients used to rely a great deal on their previous ex-
perience with a strain, and on advice from our staff,” said Elan
Rae, Harborside’s Director of Sales. “Now a lot of them just head
straight for the highest THC selection.” Because of its therapeutic
potential, there is also increased interest in high CBD medicines.

ALP also plans to introduce a research component to the testing program.

“Providing patients and MCDs with the data is just the first step,” said
ALP co-founder Addison DeMoura, “What we really want to do is break
the government’s research blockade.” DeMoura was referring to the
almost complete absence of any cannabis-related research in the United
States, due to the federal government’s refusal to provide cannabis for
scientific studies. At the same time, the DEA and other agencies point to a
lack of scientific data as a reason to keep cannabis illegal.

ALP and Harborside are exploring partnerships with scientific and

research organizations, including the UK’s prestigious Beckley
Foundation. “We have the patients, and the ability to analyze the
medicine, but we are not experienced scientists,” said DeAngelo, “We
need help to make sure all of the data we collect is up to scientific peer-
review standards.” In the proposed partnership, MCD patients would
receive questionnaires for each type of medicine they select. The
questionnaires would elicit a wide range of information about the efficacy
of different strains of cannabis, and would be coded to the test results of
each strain. The resulting database could yield important clues about the
biochemistry of cannabis, and its medical uses. “It could be a scientific
goldmine,” said Lady Amanda Fielding, executive director of the Beckley
Foundation.

Chapter 1 —
In the Beginning There Was Ganja

I
n the beginning there was the healing plant marijuana, and it
gave us buds. The buds gave forth flower and seed after its
own kind. The seeds and flowers grew tender and strong seek-
ing the light. The seed saw the light and knew that it was good.
The tender young plant grew up twisting and turning seeking to
stay in the light's love and warmth.
But the plant needed a gardener to help and nurture it along.
And so one was appointed. The gardener's name was, Adam. He
also was given help in the form of his assistant, Steve. The garden-
ers were to enjoy the fruits of their labor. For them to reap in pro-
portion to as they would sow. They did share with the less fortu-
nate all the bounty of the harvest, and there was much joy through-
out the garden. Thus, it was that the healing plant did grow and
thrive, as did Adam and Steve.
The healing plant became fruitful; it did multiply and re-
plenish the earth.
The marijuana plant was so good it was given a place of
honor and planted on both sides of the river of life that flowed
through the center of the garden. The leaves of the plant were slated
for the healing of every nation. Timothy Leary

could have blamed and hated the healing plant and the mirror it
presented. They could see their many faults for the first time, in
the mirror of the mind, opened for view by the use of the mari-
juana plant. Instead of turning away many recognized the truth
they were being shown and embraced the plant and sought change
in their lives. And that change with the plant that heals gave them
strength to overcome the great and terrible demons that stalked
their kind:
Alcholism
Drug addiction
Tobacco dependence
Many were the numbers in every tribe that claimed an awak-
ening to a consciousness of the love that lives in them and the love
that surrounds them. They had found the way out of the dark-
ness, the cave of unenlightenment and stepped out into the light
an awakened mind.

mind as to who the users of the healing herb actually were. It was
the face of everyday people, the butchers, the bankers, the candle-

sion for the sick and dying, compassion for the nauseated and
Willie Nelson sufferers of eye disease. It was about allowing compassionate use
for those wasting away from AIDS. The healing herb was begin-
ning to be recognized and understood to be a "medicine."
This infuriated the King's guard and the plant's prohibition-
ist. They had worked hard and long to demonize this so-called
healer, and they were not going to give up now. So they tried to
mitigate their losses by passing rules and requirements for use of
the "medicine." They sought that you would have to be on your
deathbed to receive the medicine. But the tide of public opinion
had already been turned in the favor of the caregivers. As the battles
ensued, the General of the war machine against the plant came up
with a new strategy. Attack the caregivers, hit them in the lines of
distribution and incarcerate many and make them pay. So they
tried to say that you couldn't be a caregiver unless you wipe their
ass. They thought once again they had won. But the caregivers
had compassion on their side. Who would even consider with-
holding compassion from someone they loved, how can anyone
put a limit on compassion?
Many questioned, is this a battle for "control" of the "medi-
cine"?
The tribes gathered and looked to their leaders, Dennis told
them that Medical Marijuana is better than regular Marijuana. They
all laughed and agreed.

people in the world. We are also the smartest people and with a
higher consciousness. We are the ones who want to feed the world.
We don't want to be a country of bullies and thugs. We are chil-
dren of the 60s, we want it all; end war, end prejudice, end hunger,
end homelessness.
It was Dennis that found the hole in their armor. He saw the
need for compassionate use for AIDS patients and made the plant
available in a loving, caring, sharing environment. It was lovingly
called, the Cannabis Buyers Club. It was Dennis that was destined
to break through the barriers that blocked the medicine. Only some-
one with nothing to lose could be chosen. Any other person would
have to put their wife, kids, house and everything they owned in
jeopardy; they would be threatened, coerced and blackmailed.
Anyone but Dennis would not be so bold as to open a 5-story felony
to distribute the prohibited plant. It was Dennis that introduced Bob Marley
the miracle ounce defense into the court system. You were allowed

t’s one of those special places, a certain magic rolls
off the tongue when her name is said, a cultural gi-
ant, sanctioned and stranded back in the 50s. A lone
communist outpost stranded in the warm blue sea,
the only such representative in the western world, shunned
by it’s gigantic neighbor to the north, secluded, lost deep in
the last century. Once capturing the jealousy of the world,
the Monte Carlo of the Caribbean, days of glory have fallen
to disrepair; a slight waft of warm fresh tobacco lingers
welcomingly in the air, jazzy sounds echo through the al-
leys, the whole city swings.
American citizens are still not permitted to voluntarily
visit Cuba, one of the only closed borders, obscene outdated de-

The actual matter of forbiddance regarding visitation is an eco-
nomic natured blacklisting: an American is prohibited from spend-
ing any money over there, a blatant financial embargo. There are
simple solutions to outskirt such inane policies of exclusion; leap
frog through a neighboring country, either north or south will suf-
fice; buy the ticket at the counter, no pre-arrangements, preferably
cash to conceal the paper trail — make it hard for them to find
you. When arriving at the immigration office in Havana, instruct

speaking the best inebriation concoctions came from the bar “Dos Hermanos,” a certain
proclaimed favorite ex-haunt of Al Capone and other reputable society types back in
those days, many a glass have tipped back here over the years, I’m glad to add my
contribution to the cause.

stride, big pimpin’ in commie country. We found a small neighborhood strictly devoted
to Santeria and voodoo tendencies, spooky and bizarre, not welcomed but allowed to
pass. The streets are chaotic blend of pedestrians, horses, cars and trucks all jockeying
for quick position, to cross the street is frogger with your life, but relax, you’ll make it.
Saturday evening is beginning to unfold, pointy heels click clack along the sidewalks,
out for the night, almost time to party, but for some of us this process began long ago,
tomorrow’s hang over is well under way.

the moment. An eighteen-piece band: brass, woodwinds, strings,
and percussion well represented, fronted by a strong duo man/
woman combo, the music instantly captured the heart of any on-
looker. The entire multi-tiered room dances and swings wildly to
the enchanting music. Behind the band, a giant tile mirrored wall
shines from sparkling lights, no tricks or flash, amazing and mes-

ily I had snuck a few party favors into the country, tucked under
my tongue, easily concealed and discardable, fooled all those dogs
good; see the music, ears breathing the light, could stay like this
forever, right here right now.
On the walk home, getting real late now — or early depend-
ing on perspective, but for us the clock is ticking. I stopped on a
park bench back near the whore bar from earlier, last beer of the
night, watch the blackness for a while, mind returning from the
haze of ferries, quiet and solace greatly appreciated. A man with

put a damper on the excitement in the air for today is the
first annual High Times Cannabis Cup.
Walking inside the expo is another world. There are
two floors jam-packed with everything from glassware to
canna-waffles. The most ingenious inventions can be sought
out in this small two-story building. It’s a cannabis para-

Once finished seeing the sights, tasting the
bud, and discussing current events with other
vendors and expo-dwellers, there is still more to
enjoy! There are seminars running in the main hall
on subjects ranging from cannabis horticulture to
cannabis legal information. If that still isn’t
enough, one could always track down Henry
Hemp. (see page 42)
Henry Hemp is an expo-dweller dressed
from head to toe as a large hemp plant. Once in-

Blue Dream is one of the sweetest and strongest strains available in

medical cannabis.
A Blueberry x Haze cross that is sativa-dominate* and pale green in
color with a candied sweet and skunky smell. Purple, brown, and orange
hairs round out the compact nugs. Blue Dream will hit your head hard
and then drop down through out the rest of the body leaving one
very calm and relaxed.
A large yielder that is easy to grow indoors or out. Blue Dream will
usually flower between 60 and 80 days. Look for blues and purples in
the tops before deciding when to harvest. This strain is not prone to
powdery mildew. Make sure to cure your harvest for at least two weeks
before medicating with it.

*Sativa gives a head-high. There is a feeling of being uplifted and

energized. The brain can become more stimulated and active. Sativa is
a taller, lighter green plant with less chlorophyll and more THC.**
**THC is one that is the chief intoxicant in marijuana and is used
medicinally; also called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Our “group” in

The March on D.C., July 4th 2010 by Momma D, (Holistic Remedies Co-op)

Independence Day, 4th of July, is just a date for some, but for Americans it is a day to celebrate our great country.
We use this day to teach the young, old and newly immigrated Americans about our pride and history. The 4th of July is also
cause for reflection and remembrance of those great people, known and unknown, that have fought to shape this country we
call the “good old USA.”

I used my flag as a shield from the sun and picked up an
old-time 4th of July traditional meal, a hotdog, and I noticed people
staring at me strangely. I had forgotten that I was not in California
any more where people accept cannabis leaves on an American
flag. It is the same in the other 13 states with cannabis laws, but
not in Washington, D.C.
I got to the parade just in time to see a mounted military
group coming down the street with each soldier carrying a
flag. There was a 30-foot Strawberry Short Cake floating in the dis-
tance. The crowd seemed to enjoy the many high school marching
bands playing traditional July 4th tunes. As the drum line passed,
there was a strong beat in the hearts of the crowd. I saw a girl
completely painted from head to toe as an American flag walking
around. It was by now approaching 3 p.m. and the parade was
about to end while the “March on D.C. for Medical Cannabis”
was about to start.

theless, to blindly agree to the initiative without comment, because
it says the words I have longed to hear, seems a little senseless as
well.
First, taking a look at the medical marijuana community as
it has progressed over the past 14 years and who paid what price
for that progress has to be considered. Who will and who won’t
profit, and it seems taking a small peek at the fed’s reaction, might
be prudent for all voters. It is our dollars that are paying for that
argument on both sides.
Greenkind is unequivocally on the patient/user side of this
and all other issues. What effect will the law have on us, the com-

What is not being discussed and the fact that screams loud-

Our dear Obama reappointed Bush’s choice, Michele Leonhart
(she is unofficially official for the time being) to head the DEA, so
no change there. The first month Obama was in office he called for
questions from the people to be posted on the web and he would
then publicly address the questions. The number one question
asked was about the rescheduling or legalization of marijuana.
His response to those millions who took the time to partici-
pate in his listen to the people moment was an inference that they
(we) were all high and therefore undeserving of a straight answer.

PRODUCT REVIEW MAGAZINE

Here are three top quality products we ran into at the THC Expo in Los Angeles. We don't get
paid for product reviews, so these are products we are enjoying and thought you might also. Each
product is from small-independent/family-owned company. The Enjoy Jar is in my stash drawer at
the moment, the chocolate jar is empty, but we will re-order more of the MacMulberry Brittle from
Divine Organics soon. Yes it is true I have one new Lollipipe boxed but with no destination and one in
a plastic bag that I used during the final basketball game of the season — Go Lakers. So please check
out the websites to learn more. by Greenkind Staff

Enjoy Jar
The Enjoy Jar is great storage and travel kit. Unlike
other jars, the Enjoy Jar is divided into 4 compartments
with a quality screw-top to seal in freshness. It comes
with a couple of fingertip-sized plastic containers with a
snap-on top for that bit of hash or a special nug. They
easily fit into one of the compartments even if there is a
bud or two. The jar is durable, see-through plastic and
comes fitted in a quality cotton pull-string bag. The jar
tucks easily into backpacks, purses, travel bags or your
stash drawer.
Our Enjoy Jar quickly found its way into the center
of our medicating ritual. It is so cool to have one bud left
of that really good Kush, and store it away for the right
time with the right person. With 4 compartments, we
have the opportunity to switch it up, mix it up, and at
our fingertips.

It is fun to look at the jar when we have four strains

stuffed into the compartments — can't help but get the
full meaning of the name Enjoy Jar. Tucking it away in its
bag and drawing the string closed always makes us
smile. How cool is that? www.enjoyjars.com

Lollipipe Candy Lollipipe
variety pack

We have met Lollipipe at a few

of the past events and stopped and
looked at the cute, candy pipes in
their boxes, but not until recently
did I have the reason to open it and
use it for medicine. Wow, it was like
being a kid again with one of those
forever suckers.
But this is no kid's sucker, but
it is another feel good, fun product that is great to use all
by your self. You know, to use when you kickback, watch
your favorite program, and have a toke or two to
celebrate life and relax. The sweet little pipe has made
me feel good even when there wasn't much to feel good
about.
The pipe comes in a slide-out cardboard box with a
sucker stick that is inserted into the mouthpiece which
has a duel purpose, one is a cool draw, the other is to
hold the sucker if you can't resist taking a lick or two.
The pipe is shaped like a blown glass pipe and
comes in many colors and flavors. A plastic wrap, like a
cigar ring, is fitted around the stem of the pipe for easy
handling.
Another cool thing about Lollipipe is it can be tossed
into a bag or backpack, box and all, as an emergency
www.lollipipe.com pipe. It won't break, stays fresh forever and it will be
there should you need a clean disposable pipe. Best of all,
it has a tripped-out re-sealable plastic bag to slip the used
pipe into for next time.
Lollipipe is little gift you can afford to give with a
big wallop. No one will receive a Lollipipe without saying,
“I always wanted one of those!” www.lollipipe.com

Divine Organics
Raw Chocolate
This product has nothing to do
with medicine. It is all about the best
chocolate around at any price. Divine
Organics is a 420 friendly company, but
they don't use any medication in their
products. You know what? It doesn't
need medicine to make it a real taste
sensation. It is one chunk of chocolate
you will remember. We love it, and
give it as gifts, eat it and go on-line to
order more. Mind you, we are not
candy-eaters. www.DivineOrganics.com
