Stewardship of the Good News

Pr. Matthew Rose
Merry Christmas! Yes, I know that by the time you read this article, the frenzy in the Malls will have
calmed down, and perhaps even some of the ―After-Christmas‖ sale signs will have begun to look worn, and be
taken down, but I think it’s important to hold on to Christmas tightly as possible. I could go down the road that
technically it is still the Season of Christmas until Epiphany roles around, mid January, but I am not so sheltered
to think that the ―official‖ church calendar shapes anyone's perception of the holiday season, like it once might
have. Instead I encourage us to not throw the baby out with the bathwater (or manger, as the case may be) this
year.
As we pack up our Christmas trees, put away the lights and the ornaments, and drink our last cups of Egg
Nog, for the year, let’s try to hold each other accountable to remembering the awe and wonder that comes with
hearing, ―For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.‖ Can you imagine what
the church, our church, might look like if we were to grasp onto that promise of God Emmanuel in everything we
do, from worship to meetings, from Sundays to Weekdays?
I will confess this is not something I always do as well as I would like. Maybe part of it is that I have been
steeped in the Lutheran theological tradition, a tradition that emphasizes the Christ of Good Friday and Easter
(that is, a God of Justification, Forgiveness, and Resurrection) much more then the Christ-child we find each
Christmas (that is, a God who is ever present, empathetic, personally involved with and for us). But this is no ex-
cuse. Our God is all of this, and more. God isn't just ―doing‖ stuff for us (which God is), but also ―being‖ with
us, even in times where if we could we would even abandon ourselves.
So that is my challenge, my hope, for this coming year that we can all find a way to pack up Christmas, but
acknowledge that same Jesus is still with us. Pastor Matthew Rose
